Emma Stone Confirms Web-Shooting 'Device' for Spider-Man Costume!

Actress Emma Stone, portraying 'Gwen Stacy' in Sony's Marc Webb-directed Spider-Man reboot speaks vaguely on the first official still featuring the costume & a webshooting device.

While Sony released the first official still for the Marc Webb-directed Spider-Man reboot, featuring actor Andrew Garfield in costume along with the mysterious metal discs on his inner wrists, it only hinted that the new film may be using the the old mechanical system of web-shooting used in the early comics.

Well, chatting on the red carpet of the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards, MTV caught up with actress Emma Stone, who of course is portraying the love interest 'Gwen Stacy' in the Spidey film. Speaking vaguely, the actress essentially confirms the "mysterious metal discs" as in fact, a device.

While this confirms theres some sort of mechanicalism going on here, we don't now to what extent. So, currently in the midst of filming, Spider-Man returns to theaters in 3D July 3, next year! What do you think of the new direction?

What really doesn't make sense about organic webshooters was explained to me years ago by a friend. What does he do when he runs out of webbing? Eat a sandwich?

I'm wondering if breaking his web-shooters will play into any of the comedy, like it often does in the comics.

thank god the webshooters are the only realistic way for him to websling. i mean come on jizz sacks for webbing really? this is really good news

@CaptainProg the point is that peter parker is a high schooler but an exceptionally scientifically gifted one at that. one of the character traits i think most of us felt was forgotten in Rami's trilogy. but i wont deny it would be cool to have that cameo! not that it would happen haha

I think the mechanical web shooters give the costume an added sense of complexity. The only decent explanation I've heard for the biological shooters came from J.M. Strazynki's run on AMAZING SPIDERMAN, saying that they were an evolution of his powers. If Sam Raimi had started with the mechanical shooters and THEN done something like that, I would have been a LOT happier (even though the comedy still sucked). At least he would've been faithful to the source material by doing that.

@SuspenseSmith
I totally agree.
I Like how you mentioned how he can shoot other types. Web-shooters have a lot more potential than shooting just plain webbing. They could take also a note from Ben Reilly and incorporate the the other gadgets he invented for the shooters.

@SuspenseSmith Nice list but one problem...you can have all the pro's you want but if you can't overcome the "suspension of disbelief" item at the bottom of your little list then your stuck with a stinking pile of BS. In other words "that dog won't hunt". It looks like we're going to be stuck with web-shooters so no point in crying about it anymore. I'm hoping they find some way of explaining the existence of these miraculous web shooters that doesn't involve a seventeen year old kid throwing them together in his garage after school. I've heard some theories that are somewhat workable (namely the one involving his father inventing them) but I still see one major flaw. Anything someone can engineer can be reverse-engineered. In the marvel universe where you have many near super-human scientific minds, I doubt that such an amazing device would not be duplicated/mimicked on a massive scale, especially by those parties seeking to do ol' Spidey harm. It always made more sense just to include them in his powerset if only to explain why it's an ability that's unique to Spiderman. With mechanical web-shooters I wouldn't be surprised if by the next film you have the entire NYPD running around with them. Blah!
skidz
skidz - 1/17/2011, 12:34 AM
superpooper: where else would he 'throw them together' without getting caught and someone reverse engineering the tech for their own purposes? Is it really that hard to picture a kid with a genius level IQ coming up with that and thinking that far ahead about it? Some people slap labs together in their own houses!
superpooper
superpooper - 1/17/2011, 12:36 AM
When someone can show me some hard science (I'm not saying they can't because I haven't researched it) that could explain how someone could ever possibly contain the amount of web fluid spiderman uses in a wrist size device I'll shut up. How much silly string can you shoot out of one of those cans? Now multiply that by one million and that's about how much Spidey uses in one evening! Not to mention how strong this miracle adhesive would have to be. Now science has done some miraculous things, but this? Not for at least a thousand years if ever. If I have the choice of suspending disbelief by explaining the unexplainable with the "super human/ supernatural" or BULLSHIT SCIENCE...I'll go with "Superhuman/Supernatural". I really would like someone to explain to me how this could ever be possible so that I can feel better about seeing this movie PLEASE. Don't make me look it up myself! lol. I HATE WEB SHOOTERS
superpooper
superpooper - 1/17/2011, 12:46 AM
@skidz Yeah...they're called METH LABS. Sorry but an invention of that scale wouldn't be something that people would look at and go "oh...that's nice". It would be a scientific breakthrough and companies would be murdering each other just to get their hands on the formula. Parker would make billions selling it and would never have to touch another criminal to fight crime. He could set up Aunt May, Mary Jane and all of friggin LONG ISLAND for LIFE! If your talking about "suspension of disbelief" then, to use a much overused word on this site- FAIL. I don't care how noble Peter Parker is or how much power and responsibility he has, you can fight crime a hell of a lot better with a couple billion in your bank YA THINK? Jeezus!

I liked the idea of Organic web-shooters as much as I liked the mechanical ones, I just think it needed a better explanation as to how he produced them. Peter is supposed to be smart, he would have figured it out. I liked the idea of Peter inheriting possibly the spider's most incredible ability (though no mention of how he adapts the arachnid exoskeleton to his human system. I should shut up before the producers decide to make his skin hard as diamonds and shiny...or should I say glittery...)

I'll be the first to say it, Tobey Maguire's Parker/Spider-Man was far too dorky and naive for my tastes (part of that was the writing). He's supposed to be neurotic, not a simp. Andrew Garfield seems more like the type to portray him as a sardonic, witty, occasionally brooding young man with a lot of clout despite his nerdiness.

On a completely unrelated point:

I know Venom isn't that great of a character, and most people that advocate for him are ignorant fanboys.
For the sole reason that I love the first part of the Black Suit saga (the part without Eddie Brock, where Peter has to confront his darker side) I still hope that Venom plays a part in this series, but I want the saga of the black costume stretched across at least one WHOLE movie this time, because you have these phases to cover:

-Discovery of suit, Peter enjoying greater powers
-Suit warps Peter more and more until he does something absolutely evil, i.e. actually killing the main villain, willingly, brutally and realizes he needs to destroy the symbiote.
-Peter free from suit, hears about mysterious murders with victim's brains eaten out, obviously by Eddie Brock/Venom
-Endgame, faces Venom, which in a way is confronting himself....And it either finishes there, or Venom escapes and they carry it over.

I know this is an off-topic post, so, let's hear the hate.

@ ComradeGrey

Good points all round :-)
And I do think that this new guy will make a better Peter Parker/Spiderman than Tobey Maguire (he just creeps me out now when I look at him :-P .LoL)

Its funny though that if this is meant to be more Ultimate based that they end up going with the web shooters. If the Venom comes back in this series i'm sure they'll do him more justice ;-)

@superpooper- here you go.........its called fiction. how would you "scientifically" explain his super-strength? adhesive skin? spider-sense? enhanced agility? what about batman? do you think all his gadgets should be "organic"? or superman? you think he should sell his dna to scientists to make billion of dollars? really, your argument has no validation when talking about FICTIONAL characters. come on dude.....

@superpooper- According to Marvel "Academically gifted, Peter displayed an uncanny affinity for science that was nothing short of genius. Socially, however, he was painfully shy and the target of much cruelty by his peers at Midtown High School." He's not Some-Teenager. Your going backwards looking for proof that he was genius enough to make the webbing when inventing the webbing was Stan Lee's proof that he was a genius.

Are you going to complain about how a radiation blast turned one man into a green giant instead of slowly killing him? To demand concrete science to explain science fiction is absurd.

ScionStorm

Anyways, things to remember:

*Peter was SIX when he was orphaned. They always cast uncle Ben's death as his first "tragedy" but a 6 year old is intelligent enough to be traumatized by the reality that he'll never see his parents again. An age where memories are just starting to solidify- enough to be painful.

*Captain Richard Parker, a decorated soldier of the United States Army Special Forces, was recruited by Nick Fury to the C.I.A..

*Mary Fitzpatrick was the daughter of O.S.S. agent "Wild Will" Fitzpatrick. She attended the best schools and eventually followed in her father's footsteps, becoming a C.I.A. translator and data analyst.

*He has obviously inherited traits from both parents. His family HAS HISTORY!

*There's a running joke that Spidey doesn't wear underwear because he chaffs.

*He liked Liz but never went out with her. She was the one that started falling for him even though she was dating Flash Thompson. Her step-brother is the super villain Molten Man and she eventually marries Harry Osborn, inheriting his entire Osborn Industries after he died. Mad props to the woman who was once the ditzy blond high school popular.

*Gwen was Peter's first true love but Mary Jane had been hiding Peter's super hero secret since long before Captain Stacy. She sometimes supplied or played his excuse to let him ditch and put on his threads. Her party-girl attitude sobers immediately after her best friend dies(Peter is NOT the only one deeply affected by Gwen's death). Her biggest vice is running from her problems, contradictorily, she instead stays with Peter to grieve.

Can you imagine what Peter would have been like if he had been raised by his super spy parents? . . . probably woulda started calling on "Uncle Logan" and devoted his life to fighting Hydra. Heroics is in his blood and it doesn't start with the bite of a radioactive spider.

@scionstorm- I just wrote a long reply but it didn't post so if it does later I'm sorry if I'm repeating myself, but where in my comment do you think I suggested any thing like that? Either I didn't make my point clear enough or you missed it entirely. We're talking about an inherent ability vs a device that can be reproduced by anyone with equal or greater scientific knowledge.
superpooper
superpooper - 1/17/2011, 2:14 AM
@ scionstorm Of course we're talking about fiction here and I don't need you to remind me of that. But the main argument that people keep coming back to is "suspension of disbelief". Now if you want us to believe that in this fictional world a man could be bit by a radioactive spider and get super powers then it's not much more of a stretch to think he could produce webs as well. It's much much easier to swallow then some 17 year old, genius or not, created a miraculous device that noone can reproduce all the while operating with little to no resources save the money he earns as a freelance photographer. He can barely afford his rent and he's able to whip up massive amounts of this webbing material as well as a device to both store and project it? Where does he get the necessary chemicals? Walmart? Sure
superpooper
superpooper - 1/17/2011, 2:30 AM
@ scionstorm with all due respect it's your argument that isn't valid. Of course Superman wouldn't sell his powers for profit. The fact that he has inherent abilities that no one else could have or reproduce for themselves scientifically is what makes him unique. Of course Batman wouldn't sell his devices. Why would he? He's already a billionaire. Besides he's not using anything that others with equal or greater scientific knowledge could not make for themselves. There's just too many holes in the web shooter theory to hold water. James Cameron had a good idea for the web shooters that I find much more plausible in that the web shooters are a device he created to help him aim and control the webbing which was produced by him organically. It's more or less a marriage of the two theories that I find much more acceptable.

I think Dr. Conners will help Peter make it, since they are close friends, then Conners turns into the Lizard and yeah.
superpooper
superpooper - 1/17/2011, 2:40 AM
@ ScionStorm Furthermore, you referred to Stan Lee but did you know that it was Stan Lee's original intention that Spiderman produced his webbing organically? He only went with web shooters because he thought that readers back then would find it too hard to accept that he shot webs from his wrists. With what we know today in science and physics that's not the case. You can talk about nanoglue and nylon solutions all you want, but where would he get enough of that material let alone afford it and how would he store the amount that he uses on a daily basis?
ScionStorm
ScionStorm - 1/17/2011, 2:42 AM
@superpooper- that is assuming those people ever got a hold of them to reverse-engineer. And of course to figure out how to adjust the pressure requirements. Peter applied his super strength to the trigger design- a normal human would have to go at it with a mallet to pump out the fluid.

The fluid itself of course was designed to be untraceable, dissolving after only an hour.
