BOX OFFICE: The Wall-Crawler Falls To Caesar As WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES Tops SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING

Spider-Man: Homecoming proved to be no match for War for the Planet of the Apes at the North American box office this weekend but it's not all bad news for the wall-crawler! Find out more after the jump.

We told you earlier this week that the race between Spider-Man: Homecoming and War for the Planet of the Apes would be close, but Caesar has emerged as the true box office champ this weekend in North America. With an impressive $56.5 million debut (which is admittedly down from initial estimates of $60 million - $65 million), the critically acclaimed threequel has emerged as the winner.

Spider-Man: Homecoming, on the other hand, has taken second place with $45.2 million. That's a 60% drop from last weekend's spectacular opening and a bigger dip than Sony Pictures would have liked.

Things aren't looking too bad for the wall-crawler, though, as its current domestic gross is $208.3 million. What that means is that after just two weekends, Spider-Man: Homecoming has already made more than what The Amazing Spider-Man 2 did in its entire theatrical run. That's a big improvement!

What did you decide to watch this weekend? Let us know that in the comments section down below.

@Erik10101 - Very refreshing attitude! I myself will not see the Apes movie as I have not seen the second one, but I hear nothing but good things.

I liked spider-man a lot, but I'm glad to see apes take the top spot. It's a fantastic movie and a perfect end to one of the best ever cinematic trilogies. Congrats to reeves, serkis, and everyone involved.

You could only wonder what the two could have made without the fierce competition of each other.

I loved both movies, i want them to succeed, being this close will sure hurt their BO, and it's a shame.

Apes deserves it. Spidey is just beginning and will make moolah for the next decade. This is Apes swan song.
