CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Concept Art Reveals That Spider-Man Nearly Wore Ben Reilly's Scarlet Spider Outfit

Marvel Studios considered a lot of different designs for Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War and concept artist Ryan Meinerding has now shared a version inspired by Ben Reilly's Scarlet Spider suit.

Captain America: Civil War didn't come too long after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 so Marvel Studios knew they had to do something different with Tom Holland's wall-crawler to make him stand out from the version played by Andrew Garfield. That included a brand new costume and as you can see below, one idea imagined by concept artist Ryan Meinerding was that he would rock this alternate look.

If you're a fan of the comic books, you'll be well aware that it was Ben Reilly's Scarlet Spider who wore this outfit when he became the new Spider-Man in Peter's absence. While this didn't make it into Civil War, the hero's homemade suit in Spider-Man: Homecoming bore a resemblance to Ben's first suit.

Whether or not we'll get The Clone Saga on the big screen is hard to say. With Sony using so many different villains in standalone spinoffs like Venom and Silver & Black, Marvel Studios could do a lot with The Jackal and characters like Ben, Kaine, and Judas Traveller. We'll just have to wait and see on that front but be sure to let us know your thoughts on this costume in the comments section.

So because I can't show any new artwork right now and apparently because everyone is digging the unused Valkyrie and unused Hulk hair styles, here is a unused Spider-Man design. This was done for Civil War, which seems forever ago now. This design pass is inspired by the Ben Reilly costume which was originally designed by the awesome @officialmarkbagleyart for the comics! It's fun trying out different size spiders and playing with the web designs when I'm designing Spidey suits for the MCU. Head over to my Twitter where I'll have the full suit uploaded 👍#spiderman #captainamericacivilwar #spidermanhomecoming #spidey #marvelcomics #marvelstudios #benreilly #conceptart #costumedesign #superhero #marvelcinematicuniverse

This dude is obsessed with the Ben Reilly's costumes. The proto suit was basically the Scarlet Spider with reversed colors.

This was Ben Reilly Scarlet Spider

This is also Scarlet Spider

This is Ben Reilly Spider-Man

That concept art isn't Ben Reilly Scarlet Spider.

Also, even though Ryan just posted this, it is old news.

Spidey suits keep getting worse with MCU. Civil War was kind of okay, if not remotely exciting, and very overdone on CGI. Homecoming was ugly as [frick], awful, overdesigned horrible suit that I still can’t believe was okayed by a team of movie making professionals, or accepted by viewers. And the Iron Spider one is just as overdesigned. Ugly lines going everywhere, no clear definition, just looks like a shiny mess of lines. It can’t be that hard to do, surely? Even the Raimi suits were far better, and this is the MCU!

Best suit I’ve seen was the one glimpsed in set photos from Civil War that they never used.

Homecoming was a bad movie on a lot of fronts but having the MCU screw up his suit in his first movie in the wider universe still pisses me off.

Oh, but worth noting that the homemade suit from Homecoming looked great, and showed the value of simplifying things. Looked more iconic than the main suit.

@connorblaze - Well, to each his own... I'm glad they didn't go with this one. I dislike this rubber webbing so much.
