Kevin Feige On SPIDER-MAN's Director And Tom Holland's Screen Test With Robert Downey Jr.

Jon Watts was something of an unexpected choice when it came to Marvel and Sony's decision of director for 2017's Spider-Man reboot. In a recent interview with Collider however, Kevin Feige explained both why he's the right man for the job and how the two studios ended up picking him. "It was myself and Amy Pascal and Tom Rothman, and also Jeremy Latchamand Louis D’Esposito at Marvel where involved in that," he revealed. "We met with a lot of people and came down to a couple of very, very, very good finals candidates. Jon just—we really liked his movie Cop Car, we met with him four, five, or six times, and each time he had more and more interesting things to say. And at Marvel, it always comes down to ultimately, “We can make a movie with this person for two years, we could spend almost every day with this person for two years. Let’s go."

We've heard a lot about the screen test Tom Holland did with Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man in Captain America: Civil War) that ultimately helped him land the job, and the site asked the Marvel Studios boss if they used actual dialogue from the movie or if it was something new. "It was a combination, it was mainly written for the screen test though. Which is what we usually do, so if people like you get your hands on them. [They're] usually just bespoke for a test with different names and things. So they call each other different names." As for whether or not it was Holland's chemistry with Downey Jr. which resulted in him being chose, Feige would only say: "That was part of it. When we’ll see that, I don’t know, but that was part of it." What do you guys think?

"One of the things that I think everyone is really looking forward to is the banter between Spider-Man and Iron Man. Could you tell immediately tell, ‘Oh, Tom can do it. This is what audiences want to see”?

FEIGE: That was part of it. When we’ll see that, I don’t know, but that was part of it."

Could Feige be hinting that Stark & Peter won't share screen time until the Spider-Man movie???

@KurtWagner1225 I think that has more to do with the caliber of actor that RDJ is, rather than a reflection of RDJ taking over the MCU or anything like that haha (like a few people would like to think). It makes sense that they'd hold him up as the standard that every other actor should be compared to, based on his talent and sheer star power...if Chris Pratt or Tom Holland can hold their own against him, then they can handle ANYONE in the MCU, you know?

Love that this will have Marvel's imprints all over it. Sony is just making the money while Marvel has creative control.

That makes sense. So far the last 5 articles about Spider-Man have all been about why they chose the actor and director.

Keep Tom far away from this project.

I hope we finally get a Spider-Man suit with black webs.

Due to not being overly interested in Spidey atm to be begin with, generally having faith in Marvel's casting and liking what little I've seen of Holland so far I'm completely relaxed about him as the new Peter.

I haven't seen anything at all from Watts yet, so I'm quite curious how he will do on such a big and prominent movie.

Still think it's crazy how Colin Trevorrow went from making one quirky indie movie (which I happened to know and like) that made a total of around 4 million dollars to beating the gorram Avengers at the BO with Jurassic World.

It will be lovely to finally have a witty Spider-Man.

I cant see how much they could change from TASM2 suit if they want to make it comic accurate. The emblem, black webs (not embossed this time) and a different shade of blue and red?

Also, I really hope they use this for the back this time around:

@EdmondDantes

Marvel has only made a handful of great movies. And what makes you think Doom would be better in the MCU? Majority of the MCU villains suck.

Yeah, I never understood why they chose that huge one on the back, especially Webb. I would have thought he'd try to differentiate from Raimi's.

Unless it's a marvel movie exploring new territory, directors for Marvel films are just puppets

@KurtWagner style but not substance. Why do you think Wright left, or why Jenkins left. All those directors followed orders but added their style to it, they weren't allowed to have any input as to how these charcters would be portrayed on screen becasue of the universe. Things in the universe need to be a certain way, Branagh couldn't make Thor dark haired even if he wanted to. Sure they can make it with their style, but they have no creative control over the film. Theyre like directors for TV shows, they direct an episode but its not up to them to make a game changing decision, it's up to the writers and ultimately the show runner who in this case is Kevin Fiege.
