SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Director Confirms DAMAGE CONTROL; Discusses Easter Eggs, VENOM And More

When it was revealed that Tony Stark's company would deal with super-powered battle fallout in Spider-Man: Homecoming, fans assumed this must be Damage Control, and they were on the money.

On the heels of today's new trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming, Fandango have shared their interview with the film's director, Jon Watts, and some very interesting things were discussed.

First off, Watts confirms that the Tony Stark-owned clean-up crew that butts heads with Michael Keaton's Adrian Toomes is indeed Damage Control. As you may recall, there was actually talk of a Damage Control TV series in the works at ABC a while back, and this is most likely why we haven't heard anything since.

When asked if introducing this group might open up any new possibilities for the future of The MCU, Watts replied:

"Yeah, possibly. For me, in thinking about this movie, it just fit in with our overall philosophy with the kind of story we wanted to tell. In the same way that Peter gives us the ground level view of what it’s like to be a 15-year-old kid in a New York City that was almost destroyed by aliens before the Avengers showed up. You also wonder after all those huge messes are made, who’s sent in to clean up? Is it the normal people who would be hired to do something like that? Does it become a government operation? Is it dangerous? What do you do with all the alien body parts that you find? I really like asking those practical questions about this world, and then use that to drive the story."

Watts also reveals that there will be plenty of easter eggs to look out for, as well as a post-credits scene - though he doesn't confirm whether we'll see him return for the inevitable sequel or not.

One upcoming project he does comment on, however, is the Venom movie we've been hearing so much about lately, confirming once and for all that there will be no connection to The MCU:

"It’s not connected to the Marvel world, so that’s really intriguing… what that will be. I don’t know anything about it. It’s not connected, so there’s not that overlap. I’m only focused on my movie right now."

Watts also comments on Tony Stark's inclusion, the John Hughes movie influence, and more. Click here to check out the interview in full. Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theaters on July 7, 2017.

Watts setting the record straight on Venom. Good thing too, because I'm a little tired of hearing speculation on if it will happen in the MCU. This also leaves the door open for Marvel to create the REAL Venom in the MCU.

@MrDandy - Venom has already been done in a poorly received Spidey film, and now he'll be the main character in a sony film that, good or bad, will be well-seen as it's a superhero movie. Marvel, Feige in particular, would not do a third version of a character that's already had two relatively recent iterations. They're trying to refresh the brand and make it successful again, they won't want to be seen as being unoriginal. That's why they said they chose vulture, he hadn't been seen before. And the general public is already sick of seeing retreaded ground in spidey films, that's why theyre not doing his origin again. No if Sony stuffs this up we'll never get a MCU venom. Which is a shame, because he has potential to be this version of Spidey's 'arch-nemesis' instead of green goblin. He's the perfect arch-villain because he can act as a dark reflection of the main character.

@MrDandy - I don't think that's the case. If Sony makes its "Venom" movie or a film with "Black Cat & Silver Sable," you can kiss seeing any of those characters (or the supporting characters in those films) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe goodbye.

They aren't going to openly conflict with themselves and allow a more popular studio have a crack at those characters.

Also- the ONLY way a Venom film works for Sony is if they keep the history that is was once with a Peter Parker in the past and just pick it up from there, with Eddie Brock in the suit and Parker/Spider-man is MIA or gone.

But the suit and Brock need to have had a history with Parker. Otherwise it's not Venom.

@Robin91939 - Agreed.

While Venom as a character is incredibly intriguing, I'm just having a hard time buying that general audiences will be interested in Venom without the Spiderman/Peter Parker connection.

Plus, it's pretty off-putting when you have Spidey in the MCU and then a separate universe that only consists of his villains and supporting characters... like, how in the actual f*** does that make any sense?

If that Venom movie gets off the ground (and somehow manages to find success akin to, say, Deadpool) we may be waiting for quite a while before we see him and Spidey on-screen together at all, which is really sad in my opinion and squanders some of the exciting prospects created by introducing Spidey to the MCU.

It was a great trailer. When May tells Peter that he carries the weight of the world on his shoulders, that really got me hyped. Classic Spider-Man right there.

@TheManWithoutFear - It really was. Which is why it makes me wonder why people on youtube are going "WAAAH THEY SPOILED THE ENTIRE MOVIE!!11!"
Literally the only new plot point they showed was Tony taking back the suit. [frick]ing casuals.

@Melkac - To be honest we still no nothing about the film. What makes Toomes hate Stark so much? Why is Peter fighting in Washington DC as Spiderman? Are the Sokovia Accords going to get involved? Is Tony going to fight as Iron Man or stay as a mentor of sorts? So many questions.

@Melkac - Unconfirmed SPOILER

From my understanding some believe the trailer shows Vulture dying in the aircraft battle with Spidey.
I am not of the same opinion.

@SonOfAGif - I heard a rumor that Toomes' company is recycling items found after the Chitauri invasion to turn a buck and Stark shuts him down taking all the tech for himself.

@JonC - I disagree. Stark doesn't need the tech. He's smart enough to make enough of his own gear. I bet he's procuring it on behalf of Homeland Security or whatever branch those Sokovia Accords covered.

He made it clear he's one of them and on their side, so it's more plausible that he is simply keeping them out of the bad guys' hands and in the hands of the not so bad guys...the US Government.

The whole Venom movie baffles me. Does doing an unconnected Venom solo film mean he won't be able to be used in the MCU? If so, that seems like such a waste. And on top of that, if they were to introduce venom, but still have an unconnected venom series, wouldn't that just confuse people? I'm not opposed to the idea of a Venom film, I just think the way they are going about it is a very bad idea.
