How To Fix 'The Amazing Spider-Man' Franchise?

Just to note I am a huge fan of Spider-Man. I grew up with the original trilogy; the new franchise is 'Amazing' as the title suggests however it suffers real problems at the same time. Using this article I hope to address these issues in 'The Amazing Spider-Man' franchise...

Show Less Marketing:
We all love to see loads of new footage for an upcoming film. Sony's biggest problem with The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) it has too much showing in the trailers, but when you go to see the film's the story has been altered and many scenes were cut. Well it's the same case with its sequel, lines such as: 'I do some web design...not everyone has a happy ending...you know what it is that I love about being Spider-Man. Everything" This problem also is a positive because the creates surprises. For people like me who watched all the trailers, clips and TV spots it was still surprising how much was new and fresh; scenes we hadn't seen which most people say we saw the whole film. The scenes with Aleksei Sytsevich (Rhino) were very short and 75% of the scenes with him had already been seen in the trailers therefore they weren't intense as the 'Captain America The Winter Solider' car chases. By not showing scenes from the trailers, clips and TV spots makes the fans backlash; because the scenes they were looking forward to are no longer in the film. Ok you can stay they wanted to change the story but couldn't Sony shown us the parts of the graduation were Flash Thompson meet his fellow classmates: Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy or the scene with Peter Parker and Harry talking on the bridge were Peter says 'I do some web design.'

Too Many Villains:
The main negative in the sequel is there are many subplot's in the film such as Max Dillon not developed enough. The fight scenes ended too quickly. The only way to avoid this is to have fewer villains involved in the story. Sony you have three movies before Sinister Six, subtract the Venom spin-off. You have 2/3 villains left to develop in two movies that means you don't need to overload the future films with villains, if you do then we would loose our interest in Sinister Six movie when it finally arrives because we would have already got 3 overloaded villain films. Sony so the third film could have Green Goblin and maybe one other. The forth could have maybe Doc Ock and Vulture. Any other development of villains should be done in the Sinister Six film.

Post-Credit Scenes:
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 had no post credits scene in the middle or end which is disappointing since the first one no one had a clue who the Man in the Shadows was until the nearer the release of this sequel. This shows they could have made the fans do some solid homework after the movie again; to create discussions even months after release. One of the strongest things Marvel does is give us post/end credits scenes so get the fans ready for the next film; Sony you should be doing the same.

Spider-Man vs. The Amazing Spider-Man:
Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Spider-Man 3 (2007) are all produced by Sony. By having hints of things that were mentioned or seen in the Raimi Trilogy won't hurt you Sony, you created the films you can do what you like with them. "With Great Power, Comes Great Responsibility" is a core quote from Amazing Fantasy #15. Not mentioning that quote hurts the character. Just that you mentioned the quote in the original trilogy doesn't mean you have to avoid it; is a core aspect of Spider-Man's character man and it shapes his future after the death of Uncle Ben. Well you could say Uncle Ben said 'Responsibility' in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) yes but we didn't get the whole thing. This leads me to my next point.

Several Plot Holes:
Ok, the first film had the death of Uncle Ben. What happened to his funeral? You could say well we had one for Captain George Stacy and it would be too much to have two funerals in one film, you could have shown Peter at his grave though! Did Peter forget to go? What happened to the Cash Register Thief? Did Peter forget that too? Sony should finished of that story in the first, otherwise we will get another super-villain that killed his Uncle Ben situation, AGAIN! Which was a big problem with Spider-Man 3 (2007) in the sequel we get gaps filled in for the plots that were left hanging for the audience in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) such as: Why Peters parents really left? We discover who the 'Man in the Shadows' is, from the frequently discussed post credits scene. This shows that they are filling in the plot holes throughout the films.

Soundtrack:
Music in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is composed by Hans Zimmer who also worked on Man of Steel and The Dark Knight. The score is satisfying but doesn't live up to his work on Man of Steel which was sensational. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 soundtrack still hasn't topped Spider-Man 2 (2004) soundtrack. I would be grateful if they worked both Spider-Man 2 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 soundtracks together. When Stan Lee lost an artist for The Amazing Spider-Man comics, they hired another artist and Stan Lee said to him: Don't distract the readers with a different style of artwork and use the previous artist’s style. Following that the artist slowly used his own style of art. That's what they should do for the score for next film: Use Spider-Man 2 (2004) score as a base and work in the Hans Zimmer soundtrack from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 to it with out distracting the audience. Again Sony owns the Spider-Man film rights so it's still possible, both are from different franchises so it could also be very unlikely.

Any grips or things you have against ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ franchise? Leave it in the comments.

Yes! I could not stand how they would not just say, "With great power, comes great responsibility." Though I did like Garfield as Peter. Needs less stuttering, more hating Mondays.

You raise a few good points, but I don't agree with everything you've written.
- Yes, they gave away too much in the trailers
- I don't exactly agree that there were too many villains, it worked for the story they told. Really, there were only two: Electro and Goblin, and they worked together. Rhino was barely in it, and was more of a named thug rather than a character/villain in his own right. I do think Electro should've had a bit more development/screen time than he got though, as he was meant to be the main villain.
- I don't think a post-credit scene makes or breaks a movie, but I've heard that there is at least one post-credit scene that will be exclusively shown in America, which I think is a pretty shitty move on Sony's part if true.
- The speech Ben gave was alright as it was, but it would've been nice if he just said "With great power..." instead of skirting around it. Maybe they could've put it in that voice-mail he left for Peter, and it could've been said at the end of the first movie.
- Just because we didn't see Ben's funeral doesn't mean it didn't happen or that Peter missed it, it just means it didn't need to be shown in the movie. As for the killer, you're missing the point: Peter started out looking for revenge, it was only when he stopped looking for the killer and started protecting people from everything that he became a hero. Captain Stacy says something similar during the dinner scene.
- While the soundtracks of the Amazing films has been a little underwhelming, there have been a few great tracks. It makes no sense to reuse the Raimi score though, that was for his trilogy, and it'd be confusing to reuse it here. Changing the score helps to separate the two versions; it's like how The Dark Knight Trilogy doesn't use Burton's Batman theme, or how Man of Steel didn't use the original Superman theme. As a reboot, it needs to be different in order to distance itself from the previous version.

They should use the Specacular Spider-Man series as a template for a lot of stuff.

I shouldn't comment. I shouldn't. I should have more self-control. I should just leave it be. Come on, Daniel, stop typing....

Shit.

An easy fix would be for Sony to leave it alone for a while. Stop cramming, stop hurrying, and stop trying to appeal to the current generation of teens - Spider-man's a character for all ages, all over the planet.

They need to seriously try some minimalism. You see the budget in the overly CGI effects-laden action scenes in the trailers, and regardless of the looks that we don't agree with - the truth is, they were extremely expensive to produce.

Do we NEED to see a huge talking lizard? Ok, maybe, but once you reach that realm, realism should be put on hold. Give him a snout, give him a practical effects suit (something we'd see Tom Woodruff Jr or Kevin Peter Hall wear), keep him half in the shadows, and actually MAKE him scary. Do we need to see Doctor Manhattan teleporting through electricity? It's cool, sure, but in the end, only visually interesting. I just saw Oculus on Saturday, and with a tiny budget of only $5 million, it presented a much more interesting story than any Spider-man movie.

How about characters like the Chameleon? Mysterio? Pair those two together, that'd make sense. I'm not saying the movies need to look like shit, I just think they're pouring too much into things that won't be remembered.

You would think Marc Webb had a terminal disease himself the way he's rushing to put as many little stories in the movies as possible - Sony should have called the series "The Web of Spider-man" instead. There's a lot going on, and not enough focus or buildup for them to really make an impact on anyone. Characters end up banal and redundant just to make room for other more important characters who in the end, aren't all that important.

And please, please, try to make the movies CHARACTER-DRIVEN, not just slaves to the plot. I'm talking about the plot armor that certain characters wear, or how a good many will simply phase out of the movie and just come back at some random time when they're needed. Make these people interesting.

Harry comes out of nowhere (well, Europe actually) to become Peter's childhood friend. Sandman, likewise, came out of nowhere simply to be the real accidental killer of Uncle Ben. Imagine starting off a movie with Peter married to Mary Jane, with only a hand-waved description of how they got there. It's like with 'the Dark Knight Rises' how Talia's been planning it all along and just wants revenge because Batman "killed" the father she hated. Forget being a departure from the comics, how about - "who the hell are you?" It's not like a "no, *I* am your father" revelation or exploration, because Vader was already an established villain. When you just pull characters out of nowhere and slap some super generic motivation on em, you're telling the audience that we shouldn't care about em, because truthfully, you don't. Because if you did, you would have done better.

I would say it needs fixing in the tone, score, directing, and writing. TASM was poorly written( very well directed though), it got the character stuff down but the dialogue came off cheesy. The " we could( pause) or we could(pause)" was terrible. TASM was actually very good, Marc Webb specializes in character development, and that's what made it great. Everything else was mediocre. The action was good, could've been better. The acting was SUPERB. Greatly acted. Andrew Garfield knocks it out of the park. TASM is better than the Raimi franchise in one thing. Acting. The cast is all around superior. There is no denying it. However, the directing in TASM suffered in the tone area( which it appears is also a problem in the sequel) Webb cannot make up his mind. Does he want dark or humorous? We don't know for some reason it's a poor mix of the two.

Raimi is superior to TASM because the first two movies are very good. Both have made more than TASM and both received acclaim. SM2 is hailed as the greatest CBM of all time. It turns out that TASM is more campy than SM1 and SM2, the humor is forced and cheesy.

How do we fix it?

Choose a tone, stick to it. Get better writers, orci and kurtzman? Nope. Score should for sure be improved, Zimmer could not too Elfman this time.

If all else fails? Move on, make the sinister six movie, and wait another five years. Hell, get your best lawyers and find a way to extend the amount of time it takes to develop a film before it reverts. Then reboot the god damn thing with a director that has vision and won't have producers up his ass using him as a puppet.

How to fix Spiderman? Easy, stop making the films. That'll fix it. Seriously, let's try going about ten years without a Spiderman movie. There are plenty of other cbms coming out, leave Spidey alone a while, and then start all over. (And no, I don't really like Spiderman that much, but, if it wasn't for wanting to see Justice League, I would say the same about Batman. In fact, I kind of hope they limit Affleck to teamup movies instead of a solo Batman.)

You know, I just saw TASM2, the way it's not supposed to be seen, and I've got to tell you, it's actually nowhere near as bad as some people are saying.

The "Batman and Robin" of Spider-man movies is completely unfounded. Yeah, there's a couple of puns and general weirdness, but Max is nowhere NEAR Mr Freeze territory. Spider-man himself is.... Spider-man. That's actually how Spidey's supposed to be. I mean, we actually see Peter prepare his webshooters (more than once) to fight Electro.

Max is definitely underused, and when he's not draining batteries and unleashing havoc on New York City's power grid, he's stuck in a containment unit making threats to some hammy fake-German doctor. We do see a lot of "Batman Forever" in the way that he comes to idolize Spider-man, and then want to kill him later, but it's actually pretty endearing. His motivations are a little hard to get a handle on though - it's not as simple as "I thought you were my friend!" but pretty close.

Harry is a complete and utter disappointment, however. It's not Dane Dehaan's fault; he didn't write the script, nor did he decide some of his footage should be left on the cutting room floor. I stand by the "new guy" approach in trying to sell us a character who is essentially a noob, but is supposed to have been in the story all along. The way he starts to get sick is also ridiculous, and pretty soon, we get EXACTLY Raimi's Spider-man 2, PLUS a Goblin upgrade. CRAMMING it in, it doesn't work.

Gwen is actually, surprisingly, my favorite character of the movie. I didn't like her so much in TASM because she felt so very forced... or rather, forced to enter Peter's world of Spider-man so fast. She makes her character defining speech at their graduation, and eventually gets fed up with Peter trying to make decisions for her about her livelihood. She has a nice one-on-one moment with Max (pre-Electro) in an elevator where she's NOT uncomfortable, but genuinely polite. Her ending is felt.

Harry doesn't just pick her up, break her neck, and throw her down like someone said before... nothing as cold as that. It's actually almost exactly like her death in the comics - the web kills her.

So yeah, it's a good Spider-man movie, not as bad as people are saying.

@Dethpilow I agree, I think TV shows could work very well for almost all Super heroes. For example, batman? He is perfect for the TV format. It would be in the same vein as breaking bad. A man transforms himself into something completely new that brings out his true self. Spider-man could also work very well, but I think Batman works better. The shows would only work well if they were on HBO/ SHOtime/ CINEMAX etc. they can't suffer from a channel that is unwilling to spend the necessary money for the show. It's actually possible Spider-man will head to the small screen after TASM series. Sony is making a major transition to the small screen after the massive success of Breaking Bad. So of they really want to keep the rights, they can by throwing him on the TV screen

@dethpillow I agree. I wonder if the deal included an extended off period in production. I originally thought if Sony didn't make a movie in 5 years the rights would revert. I guess the deal extended that time. Which is perfect, cause then they can let the property rest

The villains in this franchise have been ok so far with Goblin being the best even though his arc was a tad bit rushed. TASM was meh and TASM2 was actually better than the first. This is still the best Spider-Man film imo:

ASM2 is probably one of the worst movies I have ever seen, this franchise is beyond repair.
