SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE Almost Didn't Include Spider-Punk But Could A Spin-Off Now Happen?

Daniel Kaluuya's Spider-Punk became a hit with fans following his big screen debut in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, but the sequel's creative team has revealed the web-slinger was nearly cut...

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse out the spotlight on a slew of wall-crawling Variants, only for this past summer's Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse to massively up the ante.

Spider-Man India, Spider-Woman, and Spider-Punk were among the new heroes we met in the sequel but the latter was very nearly left on the cutting room floor. Talking to Total Film (via Toonado.com), co-director Joaquim Dos Santos revealed that Daniel Kaluuya's rockin' web-slinger wasn't always going to be part of the Spider-Society.

"It's funny as he had to earn his way into the film - he almost got cut out of the movie!" the filmmaker explains. "There were versions of the Spider-Society he wasn't involved in - but the scenes suffered for him not being in it. It became really elevated when he joined."

His fellow co-director, Kemp Powers, then weighed in to reveal how happy he's been to see fans embrace Hobie Brown.

"It was so gratifying for him to be such a hit as when information was leaking out about the movie, many people were asking online where their favorites were, like Spider-Man Noir etc. We were like all 'come on, you gotta trust us, you'll love the new characters' but the fans came back saying they wouldn't. But hey - look what happened!"

There's been a lot of chatter about spin-offs coming out of this Spider-Verse trilogy, with only a female-led effort semi-confirmed at this stage. Asked whether Spider-Punk will ever get to take centre stage a spin-off, filmmaker Justin K. Thompson chimed in with:

"Whilst making this movie we wanted to ensure that all of our characters and the dimensions they come from could open up - honestly, it was like making six films. We invested as much into each of them so they could stand alone if needed. And we wanted to give audiences a true sense that they were visiting something as fleshed out as a separate movie. We were geeking out whilst making it thinking how rad it would be to work on an entire film set in just one of these dimensions. We've heard from fans that they want a Spider-Punk series or a Spider-Gwen short - I'd love to see a Pav short!"

Making these movies has not proven to be an easy experience for Sony Pictures, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was reportedly besieged by issues behind the scenes due to long working hours and constant changes to the story.

Given the franchise's unique animation style, any spin-off will take a long time to develop so patience will be key when it comes to seeing this Spider-Verse expand. It would be a missed opportunity not to give some of these heroes a chance to shine, so here's hoping Spider-Punk is near the top of Sony's list of characters who could star in movies of their own.

Josh, can't we just ask @burntToast whether a Spiderpunk series is going to happen? He's basically our resident prophet who knows all. Plus he's gender fluid.

He was definitely my favourite new Spider-character. His presence was quite big, despite his limited role. And he had a great animation style too.

Don't think a spin-off is necessary though. Not every character needs one, since he already had his time to shine. Now I'm waiting for moody Ben Reilly's time to shine.

@bkmeijer1 - Yeah, I liked him as a supporting character, but I don’t think there would be enough interest for a spinoff.

LOVED this movie, even though the visuals almost gave me a seizure.

Spider punk was brilliant. He has a very unique philosophy on freedom above everything else.

You can even see this in the scene where the spider society is trying to tell him not to save his dad. Spider punk is trying to convince him to not be part of all this before they give him the lore dump. Then he's in on trying to convince miles to stand down until the second they force him to stay. At which point he specifically helps miles by teaching him how to use his powers to escape by his own will, then leaves.

Spider-Punk made the whole film!

The film becomes very much about the conflict of order and anarchy, much like The Dark Knight, but the flip side of the coin, wherein anarchy is more sympathetic.

Much like Christian Bale's Batman, Oscar Isaac's Miguel is driven by emotional trauma to impose order on the everything because of a primal need for control and he teeters on the edge of fascism. And from the far right to the far left we have anarchy, symbolised by the violent terrorist Joker in The Dark Knight and the anti-establishment Spider-Punk in Across The Spider-Verse.

Spider-Punk knew what he was doing when he got out of bed that morning.
Obviously his pillow talk with Gwen was full of Miles, which it would be because she is totally in love with him. And Hobie has realised that Miles could be the cog that needs to be spat into the works of the fascist state that he's joined (probably just to get into Gwen's panties, obviously not because it's anything he believes in because he doesn't).

The first thing he says to Miles is to use his whole hands, the palms not just the fingers. Knowing full well that this is what he would need to do when the Spider Society inevitably is forced to restrain him in that force field bubble.

I almost love the film more for making the proponents of both fascism and anarchy sympathetic. I gravitate towards both Miguel and Hobie and am torn between them like Miles and Gwen. This is how it should be. And we don't get a resolution. Wee don't get a definitive answer and I love it all the more for that.

A lot of folk rate this movie just under the first movie because it is incomplete, but I think it's incompleteness is what makes it so interesting.
