SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE Writers/Producers Don't Believe "Superhero Fatigue" Is A Problem

Is superhero fatigue responsible for the dip in box office takings over the years? Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse producers/writers certainly don't think so...

Every time a Marvel or DC movie comes out and underperforms, "superhero fatigue" re-enters the conversation... until the next film comes along and smashes the box office to pieces.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Shazam! Fury of the Gods were back-to-back releases that failed to meet studio expectations (and pretty much tanked completely in the latter's case), but they were followed by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (which was very successful), and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which is currently No. 1 at the global box office.

Have audiences become tired of the formula, or is it simply a case of sub-par movies failing to put butts on seats?

During an interview with Rolling Stone, writers/producers Christopher Miller and Phil Lord made their position very clear.

"I don’t believe it’s super superhero fatigue, I believe it’s “a movie that feels like a movie I’ve seen a dozen times before” fatigue," said Miller. "If you’re using the same story structure and the same style and the same tone and the same vibe as movies and shows that have come before, it doesn’t matter what genre it is. It’s going to be boring to people."

Lord agrees, pointing out that if the right amount of time is spent on the characters, audiences will care about the story.

"The audience in the theater cannot be sustained on Easter eggs and reveals. Or even these big, crazy multiverse stakes. They only care about, like, the relationship between Rocket Raccoon and Groot. And so this story is just so rooted in parents and kids.

And Miles and his family. With the last movie we showed it to some friends early on, and they were like, “You have to get to like all these multiple Spider-People as quickly as possible. That’s the exciting thing.” And we were like, we don’t think so. Because the thing that everybody seems to enjoy is the quieter scenes with Miles and his mom and dad. They can’t get enough of it. And I’m so glad we stayed true to what the audience was telling us."

What are your thoughts on superhero fatigue? Let us know in the comments.

In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, after reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. However, when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.

The confirmed voice cast includes Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Oscar Isaac, Jake Johnson, Issa Rae, Jason Schwartzman, Daniel Kaluuya, Shea Whigham, Jorma Taccone, Luna Lauren Vélez, and Brian Tyree Henry.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is now playing in theaters worldwide

These guys are great. Loved them since Clone High and they've made nothing but hits. Wish them all the best.

Have to mostly agree with the guys. Also I think there is a quiet concerted effort to dismiss and just outright hate on all superhero movies, no matter how good or bad it is. That latest Spielberg statement to Tom Cruise is a prime example. Spielberg thanked Cruise for bringing audiences back to theatres with his latest Top Gun movie. Completely dismissing the box office take and affect that movies like "Spider-Man No Way Home" and "Dr. Strange 2" had done before Top Gun to fill seats in theatres.

@Mugens - that's the thing is its very cliquey in Hollywood. top gun is a no brainier lets heap praise on it kinda "cinema" event movie. yet people like Spielberg and such are known for making fantastical out of this world movies that are not the usual slice of life cinema shit that gets the academy jerking vigorously. and yet they want to talk trash on super hero movies.

Been like 10 years hearing about this fatigue. It's like the dudes saying the world will end 12 years from now.

They'll always move the apocalypse onwards.

Such a good movie 🥹 The animation was insane, the story was great, the ending was epic, the soundtrack was *chef's kiss*

Fatigue sets in when you see the same plot beats, with mediocre writing, and low budget cgi. Now when you have the Spider-Verse movies, that's how you make a cbm! As much as I despise Sony with all my heart, somehow we're getting the best animated movies and arguably when it's said and done, the best cbm trilogy ever. Also [frick] Avi Arad

Well comic book movies aren't making the money they use to, they've put the price of a ticket up and people think they're doing well but less people are going.

Avengers:Endgame was literally the end for some.

@marvel72 - thats any movie any genre. thats the name of the film making game. some will be hits and some will be trash. you learn from the trash and in the end the show must go on. fatigue is a such a stupid concept, like disney and wb gonna shutdown all cbm operations over a couple bad eggs.

Bad movies cause fatigue, but great epics like Across the Spider-Verse are a delight.

It's Disney Marvel brand damage.

Some franchises are established enough under the Disney Marvel brand to have some level of success, but even those are weakened.

Take GotG3 as an example, it's not going to surpass GotG2 at the box office despite a $50m higher budget.

'it’s "a movie that feels like a movie I’ve seen a dozen times before” fatigue"'

Exactly what I've been thinking. Part of the reason why I think movies like Shazam and Ant-Man kinda failed this year is because they looked like they didn't offer anything unique.

“Super hero fatigue” isn’t the problem. It’s poorly written, boring, unfunny predictable super hero movies that are written by untalented hacks that’s causing the fatigue.

It's only a problem when the vessel/story that character is working through sucks. A super-hero can be involved in basically any genre of film and it can be good.
