MADAME WEB Rumored To Be A Completely Different Movie Set In Sony's SPIDER-MAN Universe

Madame Web has assembled an impressive female ensemble, and a new rumour suggests Sony Pictures might have grander ambitions than simply telling a story about Cassandra Webb. Find more details here...

Earlier this week, American Horror Story star Emma Roberts became the latest addition to Sony Pictures' Madame Web. She joins an impressive cast that includes Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, and Dakota Johnson as a much younger Cassandra Webb than the character's comic book counterpart.

Aside from Johnson, we don't know who anyone is playing, but some fans are convinced this movie will actually be some sort of female-led team-up introducing the likes of Black Cat, Silver Sable, and Spider-Woman.

It would make all the sense in the world for Sony to finally introduce its own female Spider-hero, especially with all signs pointing to Tom Holland's Spider-Man remaining in the MCU. Adding fuel to the fire is a recent Tweet shared by the same person who leaked those images of the Spider-Men and Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home

"For a few weeks, I've heard whispers that the upcoming Madame Web project with Dakota Johnson isn't actually a Madame Web project at all," he reveals (via CBR), "but rather something else under the guise of Madame Web (even Deadline has alluded to it) but I haven't found any proof of that."

If correct, this is massive, and a long-overdue indication that Sony is serious about creating a Marvel Universe made up of more than just villains transformed into anti-heroes. Worryingly, Morbius scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless have penned the screenplay for Madame Web, so we just need to hope S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders) can work with what they deliver.

Olivia Wilde is still believed to be in line to take the helm of a Spider-Woman movie, so there's every chance this could be where we meet Jessica Drew for the first time. We'll see.

Madame Web, or whatever this movie might end up being, is currently set to be released on July 7, 2023.

Ok... So if this is actually a Spider-Women film, then that sounds kinda cool. But if this rumor is false, and it's just a Madame Web movie...

@KWilly - it’s not a spider woman either though. It’s a team up for female spider man characters

@ShimmyShimmyYA - That's what I said. Spider-Women lol, like a female team up for female Spidey characters

@KWilly -

It's still Sony.

I don't see how that's going to end up a good film regardless of the subject matter. They've been mostly mismanaging their "Spiderverse" so it's difficult to get excited about this just because I like the characters.

Like with Venom, Morbius, and Kraven the Conservationist(?) they won't even been recognizable. 🤷

@Humperdink - Oh for sure. This movie apparently has the Morbius writers, so it's dead on arrival

I’m not really sure what they gain from pretending they’re making a Madame Web movie when it’s really something else.

From the studio that brought us Venom, Bloodshot and Morbius, from the writers of Morbius and the director of some episodes of some TV shows, this is shaping up to be another Sony masterpiece.

I mean, this would make more sense than Spider-Man villain spin-offs without Spider-Man, but I don't trust Sony.

Sony is trying to cash in on Spider Man without Spidey being in the movies. So let’s just make movies about various villains and make them heroes which makes no sense and just make references to Spidey.

i really don't know how i feel about this. The talent they hired is fantastic. the writers are dogshit. the director i don't know anything about and to top it off it's made by Sony. I just hope to god this isnt a Sony version of BoP which is one of the absolute worst movies i've ever seen. I need a trailer or a plot synopsis to convince me to spend money to see this... cuz right now, even with the impressive cast, i'm a hard no

@MotherGooseUPus

BOP isn’t even one of the worst comic book movies.

Doesn't surprise me with the number of big names that have signed. No way they're all just background characters
