Once again, the Fifty Shades of Grey star is wearing a red jacket that instantly makes us think of the Julia Carpenter version of Madame Web. That character taking on a lead role here was something we suspected might be the case, as Johnson's casting pointed to a fresh spin of the powerful psychic and ally to Spider-Man.

In the comic books, Madame Web is typically portrayed as an elderly woman, Cassandra Webb, who is blind and linked up to a life support system that resembles a web.

She has psychic abilities and frequently uses other heroes to fight her battles, leading to speculation that this movie is actually some sort of female-led team-up. However, based on how active Johnson's take on this character is, we're guessing she'll end up seeing some action as well.

Julia is a former Spider-Woman who gained Madame Web's powers after the original's death, and she's since played a pivotal role in Peter Parker's life. Her precognitive abilities have proven key in many of Spider-Man's adventures, while she's also assembled various web-slingers from across the Multiverse to battle those that threaten the Web of Life and Destiny.

Given Madame Web's apparent early 2000s setting, it's always possible this is a younger Cassandra who has been combined with Julia. However, if this movie is set during that time, it would surely require an older actor to play Madame Web in any present-day-set adventures. Then again, this is Sony, so who knows what they have planned.

S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders) is directing Madame Web from a screenplay by Morbius scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. The movie is currently set to swing into theaters on October 6, 2023.
