Marc Webb Reveals Even More Drastic Changes To Spider-Man's Origin Story

No wrestling match and possibly no radioactive spider either. Following the reveal that Uncle Ben's death won't play too drastic a role in Peter Parker's decision to become Spider-Man, director Marc Webb now lets slip even more shocking changes to the well-known origin story.

"I wanted to give the audience something new, so that started off with getting underneath the parents' story, which will unfold over probably a few movies," director Marc Webb told MTV Splash Page in a recent interview. "We don't totally wrap up that story in this first movie. It's sort of an ongoing mystery. That was something that was interesting to me."

So far, so good, right? Well, in news which is sure to leave most hardcore Spider-Man fans fuming, Webb went on to reveal that they are completely removing an important moment from Peter Parker's journey to becoming the superhero. "This is probably a reveal, but there is no wrestling match in this movie. The character is evolving in a different way. It's about finding a balance between iconic elements of the 'Spider-Man' mythology—like how Uncle Ben's death transforms him emotionally—but it happens in a different way."

And that's not all! He added, "He's bitten by a spider, but maybe it's not a radioactive spider. Or maybe it is! You'll have to see. There are elements that we were very conscious of, but it all emanated from [the idea of] this kid who got left behind by his parents many, many years before. I thought that was interesting enough for me to explore."

While changes such as the removal of the wrestling match are sure to upset fanboys, we DID see all of that faithfully recreated in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man. Does it REALLY matter that the reboot will take things in a different direction? Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place.

STARRING:

Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy
Rhys Ifans as Curt Connors/The Lizard

Good for him it's already been done in Raimi's films who needs to see the same stuff again except with a different Spider-Man?! I for one am looking forward to this new take on Spidey

I'm a hardcore Spidey fan and I approve. Spidey as a wrestler just doesn't really fit his character development. It doesn't really show a need for some responsibility whereas, lets say he's a gettaway guy for bank robbers instead... THAT would be interesting. Helps a guy get away, guy shoots his uncle, Pete realizes need for responsibility.

I think not having the wrestling match is smart. I mean how would you top the scene from Raimi's movie? You wouldn't. I also really don't consider it a "drastic" change. Sure it's something from Spidey's origin story that is held in high regard by fans but it's not vital to the character. The radioactive spider bite..that's interesting. I mean obviously he gains his powers from the bite but maybe they plan on having the spider be mutated..alien?:) Who knows.

I don't care about the wrestling match. I doubt the spider is radioactive, but doesn't mean it's not mutated in a certain way.

@CaptainObvious

Unless of course Spider-Man in this movie started out as some sort of TV guest star on some sort of talent theme show, then it would definately be more faithful to the comics.

omg!! are you sersious?!?!?! no wrestling match!???? but thats so essential to him becoming spider-man!!! everyone knows thats the most pivitol point in his evolution as a man and a hero.... wow. welp, i'm definitely NOT seeing this heaping pile of steaming garbage if they can't even do a simple thing right.

@CaptainObvious -- true words my brother...
I'm not hating on this movie, but I got to say that this news is pretty funny, because some people were like "OMG he has webshooters and there is Gwen, so it is way more faithful to the comics than Raimi's version" - well, suck it, it's not (I'm not saying it's not going to be good, tho).

The problem is that this movie INCLUDES THE ORIGIN AT ALL!!! I swear, like people don't know Spider-Man's origin! Uncle Ben should be in a flashback and that's it! Come on! Lets try and movie the story forward, people, reboot or not!

As long as it's a great film, I don't care what they do. It's an adaptation, deal with it. I'm certainly not gonna nitpick every [frick]ing detail.

Can't wait for a (possible) new trailer. Bring it!

@CaptainProg - I seem to remember that Marvel usually used the excuse that ONLY Peter Parker's body chemistry would have worked with the bite. Anybody else would have died. Ditto to Hulk with the gamma radiation. Of course, they always have it work with other people with it suits the story.

@SuspenseSmith - Yeah, but in defense of past writers, radiation DOES cut your DNA up I think (killing you, usually), so they did have some truth behind it.

It's called a re-boot, not a re-make. Totally fine with this. If they keep re-hashing the same thing over and over, the majority of the movie going public will stop going, and the rest of us will be left without CBMs

I dunno. I liked Spider-Man 1 and 2. This also looks like a good movie (visually) but I just don't have the interest to see it in theaters. I'm not sure why. Hopefully it's good, but I think I will end up renting it on demand in 6 months either way.

Who cares. When directors use creative license, it gives us a fresh story with surprises. Who always wants to watch a 'new' movie where they already know everything that's going to happen??
bhorwith22
bhorwith22 - 4/10/2012, 11:50 AM
He wasn't bitten by a radioactive spider in Raimi's either. It was a genetically enhanced spider.
l0rdleg0las
l0rdleg0las - 4/10/2012, 11:50 AM
i am glad for the losing of the wrestling match because we already saw it. and who wants to see a shot for shot remake of the Raimi movies?

and while I'm not happy with the Uncle Ben death not being the deciding factor in leading to him becoming Spider-Man, it is understandable because this new franchise needs to find its own way and stand alone from previous efforts.
superotherside
superotherside - 4/10/2012, 11:51 AM
This isn't a big thing IMO. I could actually care less about the boxing match. LOL. I wonder what kind of spider it is? The last one was a "super" spider, I don't think it had any radiation on it. I think it was genetically enhanced. So yeah... I'm not sure what they're going to do with that. Perhaps give it the OZ formula?

If you read carefully it says" like how Uncle Ben's death transforms him emotionaly-but it happens in a different way". This means, in my view, that Uncle Ben's death will still be a factor into why he becomes Spider-Man but it will not be the only factor, which could potentially provide more depth to the character. Interesting.
rbfn04
rbfn04 - 4/10/2012, 11:58 AM
Relly? Cause "I let a guy get away and he killed the only father figure I really had" isn't deep enough?

The wrestling match comes straight from the comicbooks, but to put it in the movie will be to similar to the first Spiderman movie. Im fine with not having it in the movie.

As for Peter's parents im not sure if the story of what happen to them was ever in a comicbook. Thats why I was excited for the movie to find out what happen to them! Now we have to wait a few movies to know the truth, I guess thats ok.
Ashes2Phoenix
Ashes2Phoenix - 4/10/2012, 12:01 PM
@rbfn04. It is but like what they did with Batman Begins, his parents were not his only motivation to become Batman. Their deaths played a part but Bruce also seeing the turmoil that Gotham was going through and the injustice that plagued society was a huge factor into him deciding to become Batman. It gave the character more depth and really payed off, in my opinion.
Vapes
Vapes - 4/10/2012, 12:02 PM
We got the faithful adaptation.
I know I'm interested in seeing a different take on it. Just don't change who the character is and it could play out in a number of ways and still be great.

I'm a huge spider man fan. The biggest. And I can give a rats ass if there is a wresting scene in the movie or not. Who cares. We have seen that in print and on all ready. It's not like they are changing his origin just because he doesn't do wrestling matches.
