As we all know, Shailene Woodley was cast as Mary Jane in anticipated sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man. The deals were closed down and everything seemed to be going to plan. However, after set pictures of Shailene in the role surfaced on the internet, many people were not happy with the way Mary Jane looked in the movie; with some describing her as "Not hot enough". Not long after, it was announced that Mary Jane would not be featured in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 despite all of Shailene's scenes being filmed. Of course, it was assumed that it was due to the uproar that made Sony cut Mary Jane out but Marc Webb claimed that the cut was made so more focus could be made on Gwen and Peter Parker's relationship.  But part did Mary Jane play in the film?

In in interview with Movies.com Marc Webb said the following...

Webb: “There was one little scene at the beginning where she is next door and it took place right around the montage where he comes back and there was another little moment between Gwen and MJ. But it just tipped over. The relationship between them [Peter and Gwen] is so sacred and so powerful, that it just didn't’t feel right. And it sucks because Shailene is such a f**king great actress and so cool and magical but it was just about having this obligation to this romance that I thought was sacred. It was just one of those things.”

Knowing that they were going to adapt Gwen Stacy's death on to the big screen, they knew that the inclusion of Mary Jane would distract from the shock and pain of Gwen's death.

Despite her being cut from the film, Webb seems determined to use the character in future installments when asked about Mary Jane. He goes on to say,   “Oh absolutely. The question, of course, is can Peter ever love again? And that will be something that we have to address.”

It also seems that Mary Jane isn't the only love interest that may be introduced to Peter as the character Felicia Hardy aka Black Cat was introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Webb doesn't exactly deny whether she would have the flirtatious relationship that she is known to have with Spider-Man in the comics.

Webb:In the comic books, yes. Who knows what’s going to happen with that in the future. But there are a few possibilities we’re exploring but in terms of theme, that’s certainly an interesting thing to play with.”

So what do you think of Marc Webb's statements? Was it a good idea to cut Mary Jane out of the sequel? Don't forget the thumbs up and voice your thoughts below!

The film will star Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Sally Field as Aunt May, Paul Giamatti as Rhino, Jamie Foxx is Electro and Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn. It would have been a good idea to see her introduced first. That way when she has a bigger role in the sequel it won't be all like "OMG Where did she come from?!" You know what I mean?

Even though those set pics were not the most flattering, Woodley is quite cute (especially with the short hair cut) so I would have liked to have seen MJ in TASM 2, hopefully we get the scenes on the bluray, and hopefully those scenes go online because I am not buying the bluray.

And the movie appears to have so much added stuff that deters the plot so would a brief scene with MJ been so bad anyway?

If I remember Andrew said he was interested in a playing a gay Spiderman. Or at least someone had thrown up the idea. That would be something if they did that

wait so both felicity jones and shailene woodley are set up as potential love interest's yet after writing the script and going as far as filming the scenes they all of a sudden after the internet explodes with disappointments on how the actress looks on set they decide to cut her scene out when it's only an small intro to the character that will somehow interfere in peter and gwen's relationship ? ! ? ! ? Yeah maybe if it was set up like how gwen and mj scenes were in spider-man 3 but those small scenes with shailene was just an intro and not a love triangle. Why not cut felicity jones as well then ? No one is buying it and we all know the real reason shailene was cut and it was a smart move by the studio's.

Movies.com: And you've set up another potential love interest with Felicity Jones' character, since she's had a dalliance with Peter in the comic books.

Webb: In the comic books, yes. Who knows what's going to happen with that in the future. But there are a few possibilities we're exploring but in terms of theme, that's certainly an interesting thing to play with.

THOSE LIES... they wrote a script, wrote MJ scenes....cast Woodley ...FILMED scenes with her.... and SUDDENLY Webb realises ,,The relationship between them [Peter and Gwen] is so sacred and so powerful, that it just didn't’t feel right."

GIVE ME A BREAK.... it was totally sony pulling the plug after the online backlash. Yes it was good they cut it out but he said himself it were just 2 little scenes at the beginning of the movie... and they dont want to release these scenes on bluray... It`s terrible what they ( Sony and the Internet) did to Woodley.

"I'm gonna watch this movie tomorrow. I'm not excited about it."

This is BRILLIANT. I think it says it all about the nerd community, and why these films do so well despite all the criticism.

I barely have enough free time to go see two movies a year, even when they're ones I am overwhelmingly passionate about. I can't even imagine going to see so many movies a week that I have to see ones I don't even want to see.

I wish that they'd left the scene in that showed MJ's dyslexia.

So now that MJ hasn't been introduced we are left with having to get to know her in just a few short scenes like we had to with Harry Osborn. It would have been so much more intelligent to get a brief intro to Harry in TASM1 then flesh out his character more in TASM2.

This is all a part of building a universe. It feels rushed and forced when characters only exist when the story calls for them. We should have the sense that these characters were there the whole time.
