As we all know, Shailene Woodley was cast as Mary Jane in anticipated sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man. The deals were closed down and everything seemed to be going to plan. However, after set pictures of Shailene in the role surfaced on the internet, many people were not happy with the way Mary Jane looked in the movie; with some describing her as "Not hot enough". Not long after, it was announced that Mary Jane would not be featured in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 despite all of Shailene's scenes being filmed. Of course, it was assumed that it was due to the uproar that made Sony cut Mary Jane out but Marc Webb claimed that the cut was made so more focus could be made on Gwen and Peter Parker's relationship. But part did Mary Jane play in the film?
In in interview with Movies.com Marc Webb said the following...
Webb: “There was one little scene at the beginning where she is next door and it took place right around the montage where he comes back and there was another little moment between Gwen and MJ. But it just tipped over. The relationship between them [Peter and Gwen] is so sacred and so powerful, that it just didn't’t feel right. And it sucks because Shailene is such a f**king great actress and so cool and magical but it was just about having this obligation to this romance that I thought was sacred. It was just one of those things.”
Knowing that they were going to adapt Gwen Stacy's death on to the big screen, they knew that the inclusion of Mary Jane would distract from the shock and pain of Gwen's death.
Despite her being cut from the film, Webb seems determined to use the character in future installments when asked about Mary Jane. He goes on to say, “Oh absolutely. The question, of course, is can Peter ever love again? And that will be something that we have to address.”
It also seems that Mary Jane isn't the only love interest that may be introduced to Peter as the character Felicia Hardy aka Black Cat was introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Webb doesn't exactly deny whether she would have the flirtatious relationship that she is known to have with Spider-Man in the comics.
Webb:“
In the comic books, yes. Who knows what’s going to happen with that in the future. But there are a few possibilities we’re exploring but in terms of theme, that’s certainly an interesting thing to play with.”
So what do you think of Marc Webb's statements? Was it a good idea to cut Mary Jane out of the sequel? Don't forget the thumbs up and voice your thoughts below!
