Morbius is a little over 10 days away from arriving in theaters, and with all those mysterious hints about Spider-Man in the trailers, fans are eager to learn more about this movie's place in the Multiverse. That's something director Daniel Espinosa addressed in a recent interview with Cinema Blend, suggesting that there will always be a spider-themed character in the Marvel Universe.
It's no secret that Morbius doesn't take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (instead, it's part of the same world as the Venom franchise). However, with Michael Keaton's Adrian Toomes set to appear and future plans for characters like Madame Web and Spider-Woman, the anticipation is that a spider-themed hero of some sort will eventually make their presence felt alongside all these villains.
"I mean, in almost all Spider-Verse or, you know, the [universes] that exist in the Marvel universe...if you read the comic books, the whole idea of that kind of – the Marvel string theory, if you would call it that," Espinosa said. "You have a world where you have the same characters, and it's all of the characters, but they are slightly different. So in almost all verses, you have Spider-Man, or a Fantastic Four, or a Tony Stark, or a Morbius. But they will be different in tone."
"That's not quite the way that the Marvel Cinematic Universe [is] approaching the idea, but they're remaining to some core truth," the filmmaker continued. "Then you have the second kind of legend, which is about the totem. Which is that, in all universes, there is a spider totem. Which means that in all universes, there has to be a Spider-Man. Or a Spider-Woman."
If Espinosa has spilt the beans here about Sony Pictures making use of a Spider Totem to introduce the Web of Life, Destiny and the concept of every reality having a Spider-Man or Spider-Woman, that's huge. Tom Holland appears to be locked in as a permanent part of the MCU moving forward, so the likes of Morbius and Venom could soon be squaring off with Jessica Drew, for example!
Morbius is set to be released in theaters on April 1.
