Spider-Man: No Way Home recently arrived in theaters, and Tom Holland and Zendaya have now revealed that there were once talks about MJ becoming a superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Check it out!

Spider-Man: No Way Home seemingly brought Peter Parker's relationship with MJ to a close, and it now remains to be seen whether we see more of Zendaya's Michelle Jones-Watson in the MCU.

The character's role was greatly expanded in Spider-Man: Far From Home after we met her in Spider-Man: Homecoming, but it sounds like there were once very different plans considered for MJ. In a clip pulled from an interview prior to the latest movie's release, Zendaya is asked whether she ever asked producers to be transformed into a superhero.

"No, no, no...I -" she responded before co-star Tom Holland interjected with, "They were trying for a while, though, remember that?" Zendaya then noted, "Yeah, but I leave the superhero-ing to this one [points at Holland]." So, it sounds like Sony (and likely Marvel Studios) gave this idea some thought, but who could MJ have suited up as?

Considering this MJ is a cross between Mary Jane Watson and a newly created character for the movies, looking to the comic books doesn't offer much help.

However, we'd bet that Jackpot and Black Cat were potentially considered as it wouldn't have been that hard to retcon "MJ" into being one of those vigilantes. Had that happened, this Spider-Man trilogy would have looked a lot different, but who knows what could happen when we see MJ next! There were talks of movies for both characters once upon a time, but it's been a while since we got an update.

Check out this clip from the interview below:

Surprised she never said "Go get em Tiger" in No Way Home. It's like the one form of fanservice they couldn't fit in.

Could've seen Sony go with making her a version of Spider-Woman or even Black Cat. Whatever the plan was though, it probably would've felt like an awkward recon into a popular character.

Don’t do a CW move please.

@Acidust - Yeah, this really does kind sound like some Iris West-Allen level stuff. Ugh.

@Acidust - Love interests becoming superheroes? That's only happened once and for 1 episode in itself.

@Odin - That was in 1 episode or so legit, with Iris, which has happened in other shows with love interests getting powers.

What's wrong with that?

I really like her as she is, especially in No Way Home.

On the other hand, Tom...
If THIS is how they intend to reimagine certain characters, then perhaps it's good that we stick with a 20 year old vision and had Dafoe's Goblin, you feel me?

Seriously, GOD FORBID we let Zendaya's MCU character be an original one, completely divorced from MJW.

She just works, man, she really does.

Funny as hell, a good friend, loyal to Pete, the f*ck do you want more from her???

@Doomsday8888 - when they are brainstorming ideas all sorts of things can come up, but it doesn't mean they were going to act on it. They likely agreed with you because yes she does work, but the creative process means exploring a lot of different ideas. People get really hung up on the ideas they rejected.

I'll be shocked if we ever see MJ or Ned again. I think No Way Home's ending was meant to show that Peter's penalty for f*cking with the multiverse, is him sacrificing those two relationships. Very One More Day-ish.

@99OPTIMISTPRIME - it kinda reminds me more of One Moment In Time.

Either way, the relations and dynamics Peter now has with certain characters are definitely worth exploring again in the future in my opinion. Like Ock being a full blown villain, or Ned turning into the Hobgoblin.

@dragon316 - oh yeah. I'm not saying he will appear, just that there is enough interesting material to explore if he does.

I still feel cheated by what they did with Snoke though.

@99OPTIMISTPRIME - with how it ends and the popularity of Zendaya right now…it would be both a downer to leave her out and unlikely given she’s willing to return and her in high demand by studios.

I’m not a fan of just turning anyone around Peter Parker into some kind of hero or villain.

Would she have been retconed as “Michelle Angelica Jones” instead of “Michelle Jones Watson”, she could have been the MCU Firestar. That was what I would have gone for, introducing as well a young Bobby Drake whenever mutants get to show up.
MrDandy
MrDandy - 12/28/2021, 9:05 AM
I think she’s great as just a supporting character/love interest. You don’t need everyone to become a superhero
Odin
Odin - 12/28/2021, 9:24 AM
@MrDandy - Yeah let's not do that CW Flash thing, where every named character develops superpowers in a few weeks from their introduction. That really doesn't work (among other things).
TheShellyMan
TheShellyMan - 12/28/2021, 9:54 AM
@MrDandy - Yeah, couldn't agree more. I think they wanna do this because she's The Zendaya.
NinnesMBC
NinnesMBC - 12/28/2021, 4:05 PM
@Odin - Every named character that is based from the comics and has powers that were used in heroics will logically go to develop them through the years, not within days.

Michelle's great. I'd be fine with her becoming a superhero at some point tbh.
TheManWithoutFear
TheManWithoutFear - 12/28/2021, 9:26 AM
I was surprised when they made her Jones-Watson. Considering the entire movie is essentially a course-correction it was a surprising addition.
Odin
Odin - 12/28/2021, 10:42 AM
@TheManWithoutFear - I think that was meant as a studio's message to certain fans. 'Stop hoping for another MJ to show up in the MCU. She is the MJ of this universe.'
Fogs

My problem with this isn't about the actress or even the character portrayal.

Is that feeling everything happens around the heroes. Their close friends and family becoming heroes seem sooo convenient. I'm not a fan when it happens.
