SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Hits $800M Domestic B.O. Milestone After Record 2.1M+ Digital Sales

Sony Pictures' box office juggernaut, Spider-Man: No Way Home, will hit a spectacular $800 million domestic by tomorrow, and the movie has also taken in a record $2.1 million from Digital platforms.

Though Spider-Man: No Way Home has been available to watch from home for almost two weeks now, Sony Pictures' block-busting threequel has continued to perform spectacularly at the box office, and will reach $800 million domestic by tomorrow morning.

When it hits this latest milestone, No Way Home will become only the third movie ever to pass $800M in the U.S. after Avengers: Endgame ($858M) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936M). It'll never catch the latter without a re-release - which some believe is currently being considered - but could it hope to beat Marvel Studios' mighty Infinity Saga finale?

Another $50M+ seems highly unlikely at this stage, though the movie should still web-up a few more quid before its Blu-ray debut on April 12.

The Tom Holland-led superhero adventure has also broken a new record in Digital sales, selling a massive 2.1M+ units in the U.S. during its first week of digital release since becoming available on March 15.

According to Deadline, some other studios (they don't mention any names) are envious about the film's success, and have "sniped that the movie was an anomaly at the pandemic box office, not the standard."

“Spider-Man: No Way Home is arguably the most important movie to the movie theater industry ever,” says Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "Can you imagine if it had flopped? Then every other movie would have been negatively impacted due to a lack of dynamic momentum to carry forward in the box office.”

A fourth solo movie featuring Holland's wall-crawler has yet to be announced, but we assume it's only a matter of time. Have you re-watched Spider-Man: No Way Home yet?

Well deserved.

This movie would have been well pass the $2 billion mark if it were released in China but the success it has had without China has been astounding. I saw it three times in theaters and I'm sure I will re-watch it plenty of times once the Blu-ray drops. It's a top 5 MCU movie for me.

@PartyBoy - but unlike food, films don't have diminishing quality when mass produced.

@PartyBoy - Except only a very small portion of the general audience is actually contesting the quality of the MCU. For the most part about MCU movies, it’s loved across the board. The critics love it, the general audience loves it, comic book fans love it, and the box office loves it.

@2050 - Not true.

The critics fear Disney and being blacklisted from swag and screenings.

The audience is families and children which means good box office like Shrek or Frozen.

The comic book fans are not in love with the MCU. Go to a comic book store and listen to what people say.

And the box office reflects, again, the family audience.

@Itwasme - I see your point, but I do not agree.

Films can definitely have diminishing quality when mass produced.

For example, Marvel commited a MASSIVE Comic Book Gods sin by altering Steve Ditko’s and Stan Lee’s original Dr Strange work to appease the CCP (Chinese Communist Party).

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2016/apr/26/doctor-strange-tilda-swinton-whitewashed-china

This is an example of how mass film production can damage and taint art if you do not have strong, passionate leadership who understands the work they are sheparding. Lee/Ditko’s Dr Strange characters are part of American art history and American mythology.

Disney should not be clumsily altering American mythology to make Chinese money.

If you disagree, cool. But at least read the article and be informed. Disney could have been more comic accurate while simultaneously giving a shout out to TIBET, (a place populated by a culture living in fear of going extinct), which would be very much in the fighting spirit of the REAL MARVEL, (the comics). Instead, Disney chose Chinese yuan.

Disney needs a Disney FAMILY MEMBER back in charge. These other fools have no concern for the company’s legacy and think only of $$$. And they aren’t so great at the money either when you factor in the absurd number of resources they have to play with.

@PartyBoy - Nah. Nobody believes those conspiracy theories. It’s clear MCU is generally loved across the board in all segments contrary to any excuses made. Anybody with common sense recognizes this.

@PartyBoy - it's a product that is of equal quality regardless of the number of screens its shown on and it offers equal pricing. People vote with their dollars. You can't compare it to McDonalds. If Noma could retain the same quality as at the restaurant once mass produced, and offer it at the same price point as McDonalds, it would be the most popular restaurant in the world. Films and food are like comparing oranges to IMAX.

@Itwasme - Let me simplify.

Google: Steve Ditko and Stan Lee.

The MCU censored Ditko and Lee’s historical (and very American) art and storytelling to appease a foreign market (China).

They lowered the quality (by desecrating the true Dr Strange comic book mythology) to allow mass production (a Chinese release).

Do you follow?

Personally I think it is deplorable on multiple levels.

@PartyBoy - why are you trying to change the point. I have explained to you why the analogy doesn't make sense yet you continue, so fine...

Dr. Strange was well received at the BO, by critics, and by fans - so your opinion that they diminished quality by hiring Tilda Swinton, an Oscar winning actress, is your opinion and contrary to the masses. I actually agree it was whitewashing, and wrong. But your claim it lessens the quality is also not really true given she's one of the most celebrated actors on the planet due to her quality. I was at the French Laundry once and they messed up my order. They were quick to remedy it, but the mess up didn't diminish the quality of the food.

Furthermore, if you have to bring up an incident going back 12 films ago (plus the TV's), maybe you should rethink your position.

@Itwasme - Was not changing the point at all. My apologies if it came off that way. Trying to be genuine and direct here.

Disney manhandled comic book lore (that’s the larger scale quality damage I am discussing) to get Chinese yuan (the mass production, or distribution, they enabled.)

It’s bad form. If I was an exec, I would have pushed them to stop and reconsider (re: these Dr Strange story/character details). And I would have been right! (Disney is facing numerous China-related issues now…they probably needed to pump the breaks and re-assess a long time ago.)

I like talking about this old Dr Strange scenario as it is an interesting case study for us comic book fans here at CBM.com. It shows execs making dumb decisions for some extra pennies at the expense of legendary artists and their historical works of art.

This is American art history. The execs should better know their place.

Just my opinion.

@2050 - It’s not a conspiracy theory when a bonafide RT critic on Youtube is showing off their MCU swag as they review a MCU release.

Kills credibility.

Shrek made tons of money, and families loved that series, but many adults did not enjoy Shrek or even follow Shrek. Same with MCU. NWH could not even win best SFX earlier tonight at the Oscars. Not even a bone from the adults at the Academy. Or even the 2 fan awards (that made me actually feel sad for NWH.)

Mainstream teens/adults dont care as much about the MCU as family audiences and the vocal diehards online.

I zoned out on the MCU years ago becuase the movies are like flat soda: no fizz/no bite. My best friend rejected them even earlier, and he is a full on Marvel (COMICS) zombie. Get out of your CBM.com bunker and go to an actual comic book store: it is a much more tempered reception that you might imagine. Comic book fans are smart and read alot and quick to call BS on lazy screenwriting.

@2050 - I said it was a tempered reception at the shops. As in moderate or sober.

So only glowing reviews of all MCU’s at the comic book stores you attend?

Even Shiternals? Only praise? No criticisms?
