SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Reviews Praise The Wall-Crawler's Biggest, Best, Most Emotional Movie Yet

The reviews are in for Spider-Man: No Way Home, and as those initial reactions suggested, the response from critics has been extremely positive...however, it also sounds like there's a lot going on...

The world premiere of Spider-Man: No Way Home took place in Hollywood just a few short hours ago, and the first wave of reviews have started finding their way online. We'd strongly suggest not reading any of them in their entirety as not everyone is overly considerate of spoilers, but we've rounded up some spoiler-free verdicts that should give you a much better idea of what to expect.

We'll start with the trades. The Hollywood Reporter shares a mostly positive verdict, but can't help but compare the threequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse by noting, "That rollicking, eye-popping adventure was so fresh, funny and exciting that No Way Home can really only look stodgy in comparison, relying on the novelty of faces we haven’t seen in a while and building up to the kind of operatic emotional moments the previous Watts films tended to avoid." Variety, meanwhile, concludes that Spider-Man: No Way Home "provides enough resolution for the past two decades of Spider-Man adventures that audiences who’ve tuned out along the way will be rewarded for giving this one a shot."

Deadline loved it, though, and believe "this movie is a holiday gift not only to moviegoers, but also to exhibitors, because if EVER there was a film poised to save the movie business — just like Spidey always saves the day — it is this splendidly-crafted endgame."

Elsewhere, IGN goes with an 8/10 score and a summary that explains, despite "struggles with some tired superhero tropes, everything else about it will leave fans grinning ear-to-ear." Den of Geek gives the movie 4/5, saying "No Way Home features Holland’s best work as Peter and Spidey to date, with the film driving him toward emotional extremes he has never previously touched." Cinema Blend's 5* review declares it "one of the greatest Marvel adventures to date," while Slash Film's 7/10 verdict promises "a sweet, moving swing of a 'Spider-Man' film that (mostly) manages to land." Superhero Hype, however, is concerned that there's just too much going on - calling the movie "a patchy, overstuffed adventure" - but still award it 3.5/5.

We Live Entertainment's review also describes Spider-Man: No Way Home "the best Marvel movie of all time," and even our superhero hating chums at The Playlist have gone with a C+/B- grade! Finally, Awards Radar teases a movie that's going to leave a lasting impact on fans: "Spider-Man: No Way Home is going to cause a stir. At this point, anticipation is at a fever pitch, so whether potential surprises happen or not, it’s going to be a frenzy. Bottom line? This is a very good film and potentially a top ten Marvel entry."

So, it sounds like we're in for a treat with the Sony Pictures/Marvel Studios movie, though with so much going on, it's possible this is another Spider-Man threequel that's a little too busy. For fans, that probably won't matter too much, but we'll find out when the movie swings into theaters later this week. More press screenings take place later today, so you'll want to check back here in a few hours for our verdict!

Spider-Man: No Way Home arrives in U.S. on December 17 and in the UK on December 15.

Maybe it's the hyperbolism surrounding the movie and what's potentially gonna happen in it, but even these reviews just can't get me hyped for this movie

@bkmeijer - same here. Part of it is definitely the hyperbolism.

This is whetting the appetite quite well. I knock off work on Friday arvo for 2 weeks leave, pick up my girls engagement ring from the shop, thai dinner, then Spider-Man.

2 days later I pick up my father from the airport after nearly 2 years without seeing his face.

I’m excited for this week.

Congrats!

It's not going to "save the movie business". That's unrealistic and ignorant.

Even if it makes a billion, that doesn't mean that everything relating to box office sales is going to return to pre-pandemic normalcy. It just means more people took a chance of not getting sick for this particular movie.

No one film is going to "save the movie business".

@bkmeijer - @BlackBeltJones - I'm hyped because I don't give a f#ck what the others are saying, there is nothing anyone can say that will influence my desire to see the film.
They can all say it's the greatest or the worst film ever, and it won't make any difference.

I'm hyped because of the plot, everything I've seen in the trailers, everything I'm going to see, and because I already know I'm going to enjoy it, as I've enjoyed all of them.

I wish others wouldn't allow any of this shit being said to influence them at all. You're not going to know until you actually see the film. And, it may take a second viewing a few weeks later to make a difference, because the first viewing can be a lot to process.

I'm just glad this doesn't appear to be another Eternals situation. Marvel seemed to have done the impossible. Make a good 3rd spider man movie

@Mrcool210 - the impossible is to make a 4th Spider-Man movie with the same actor

@TheManWithoutFear - Don't think they are the best Spider-Man movies, but they are still good movies in my opinion. They are above quite a few other MCU movies.

In pretty much exactly 24h from now my first screening should start. On Friday night then the second round with my best friends.

Hope that'll be enough to piece together the full movie – tomorrow I'll go into the cinema right from a night shift (and potentially on light pain meds), and Friday I'll go after getting my third jab.

Sounds good to me. Watts' Spider-Man movies have been "good enough" for me twice now, and I don't expect that to change. My problems with Homecoming and Far From Home have been relatively minor personal preferences and adaptation qualms, but they also always brought something unexpected and endearing along with them.

Eternals was the kind of movie where I felt like I could read the filmmaker's mind in what they chose to adapt and to change with the comic material. Being on the same page like that is itself an emotional experience for me. And I'd love to get that from a Spider-Man movie (or X-Men), because those were the books I devoured as a kid. I have a special connection to those characters. But I'm okay with an actor I love in the part making movies that I just like.

The Variety review spoils the living shit out of the movie (but is a pretty good read overall. If you're sensitive to that stuff, avoid.
