SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Star [SPOILER] Reveals Origin Of The Movie's Pointing Scenes

Spider-Man: No Way Home cleverly recreated the Spider-Man pointing meme, and one of the movie's cast has now revealed how that came to pass and the role they played in helping make it a reality for fans...

The Spider-Man "pointing" meme has taken on a life of its own in recent years, and even ended up being recreated in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse's Spider-Man 2099 post-credits scene.

Spider-Man: No Way Home featured three versions of Peter Parker (played by Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield), and the meme is referenced on two separate occasions. The first comes during a funny scene in Midtown High School with the three Peters responding to Ned Leeds, while the second happens during a cute moment in the threequel's final battle.

Talking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Garfield spoke about improvising those moments and the input he had in bringing the popular meme into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"We were trying to figure out the pointing thing. How were we going to do [that]? It took us a while. It kind of happened naturally on that scaffold deciding, 'Peter 1, Peter 2, Peter 3,'" he said. "Actually, I remember having a lightning bolt and running on to set to tell Jon [Watts], 'I've got it!'"

"There's this moment where Jacob is like, 'Hey, Peter' and we all go, 'Yeah?' In the script, that was that, but then my Peter said, 'This isn't going to get old at all' or something kind of sardonic," Garfield continued. "It felt kind of under-cutty and not quite right for the moment because it's cute. Then we were thinking I could say, 'This is adorable' or 'We're so cute.' Then I was like, 'This is the moment!' and Jon [agreed]. I'm so happy that worked."

The Amazing Spider-Man star was asked if there were any noteworthy moments between the three Peters that ended up on the cutting room floor, but it sounds like it was mostly just a few cases of improvisation. However, Garfield did recall a funny sequence with Holland's web-slinger which saw him ask Maguire's Spider-Man whether he'd ever had an MRI or X-Ray on his wrists to see where the webbing comes from. Needless to say, we're hoping that ends up on the Blu-ray as a deleted scene.

When Spider-Man: No Way Home is released on home entertainment platforms, you have to believe those pointing scenes are going to find their way online as GIFs and memes in their own right!

@UncleHarm1 - They also did it on the statue of liberty when they were confused about who was Peter 1, Peter 2 and Peter 3. It may not have been on purpose but they all pointing at each other when saying it.

@Fogs -
Every interaction between the Spider-men that people liked was something suggested by Andrew Garfield... His feelings for Gwen, the hints to his Spider-man being darker, the conversation between the three of them, the 'I love you' scene and now the 'pointing meme'

I would not be surprised if it was Andrew who suggested the hug or that it was improvised by Tom Holland.

Yeah, I'm glad the interaction between the three felt genuine and not forced. They really did come off like brothers.

Such a great movie, still can’t believe it really happened. Once in a lifetime opportunity. I can’t wait to hear/see Tobey talk about it.

Garfield is an amazing Spider-man who was wasted in two pretty mediocre standalone movies.

I hope he gets his chance to return again, but please keep the Sony Pictures brain trust (Avi Arad, Amy Pascal, Tom Rothman) OUT of the writers room. They’re the jackasses who made The Amazing Spider-flop movies.

Kinda made the spoiler pointless. By saying it's a spoiler it draws attention to the star specifically, then the pointing scenes with the image of the 60s show points to there being more than one Spiderman. So bare minimum you're highlighting there's more than one Spiderman in this movie.

Not to complain....but I would've liked to see them do it in costume. There would be no way of working that in so I'd rather it just be a behind the scenes gag photo.

@Nightwing1015 - I totally agree. The fan-service material doesn't strictly have to be canon stuff for me to enjoy it. Memes and call-backs and stuff that breaks the fourth wall would be great content for official twitter accounts (or whatever). Ways to market the movie and still scratch that itch (so the internet can re-meme it) without interrupting the flow of the movie.

In this case, I do also like the subtler version they did, because it was suitably organic.

So Andrew is the real writer of the movie lol
