SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Star Zendaya Reflects On "Heartbreaking" Peter Parker And MJ Romance

Spider-Man: No Way Home star Zendaya has looked back on Peter Parker and MJ's romance in the MCU, describing the way things ended between the two as "heartbreaking." Find her comments in full here...

Spider-Man: No Way Home ended with Doctor Strange being left with no other choice than to cast a spell that made the world forget Peter Parker. That included the teenager's girlfriend, MJ, with the two sharing a final kiss during their tearful farewell.

While Peter vowed to find MJ and make her remember, he backed out after seeing a cut on her forehead sustained during the final battle at the Statue of Liberty where she very nearly died.

We have a feeling they'll be reunited before too long, of course, and Zendaya reflected on Peter and MJ's relationship during a recent interview in the Spider-Man: No Way Home The Official Movie Special Book (via @backtosnack_TTV).

"The heartbreaking thing, for me, as someone who cares about Peter and MJ, is the fact that they got probably just a few weeks to enjoy being kids in a new relationship and in love...and then everything explodes in their face," Zendaya says. "I was like, 'No, they deserve happiness!'"

"I think what's important is they [MJ and Peter] love each other for who they are. It's clear from the first movie that she's probably loved him long before she figured out that he was Spider-Man," she continues. "And he appreciates and loves all her quirky takes on life."

"What's cool is [MJ and Peter] each understand each other on a real human level, which allows them to be more vulnerable. That has been the fun thing: watching her become more vulnerable as she knows that Peter loves her."

While MJ will probably take a backseat role in Spider-Man 4 (many fans would like to see Black Cat introduced as a new love interest), we find it hard to believe the romance between her and Peter won't blossom again before too long.

After all, she seemed to have a glimmer of recognition at the end of No Way Home and their love for one another might just be enough to overcome Strange's magic. We'll see.

Writing-wise: these two had the best romance in any Spidey flick.

And it was pretty heartbreaking to see it end. I hope they keep Peter on his own without MJ and Ned for a while. They can and should be reunited but much later. Maybe at the end of the college years.

they could have built up the romance way back in ffh, i don't like how peter just goes from not caring about her at all to suddenly being into her

@hazapez - Right it just...happened. They should've waited until No Way Home to add that element.

@hazapez - I mean that's how high school crushes work. I was completely indifferent to one girl in ninth grade and then a year later I had a crush on her after getting to know a few quirks she had I liked.

What matters is that we saw the attraction between them develop as they talked throughot FFH, with both of them overcoming some insecurity in order to be ready for a relationship.

I just want to see Peter have actual love triangle issues. We need Gwen, Felicia and even Betty if possible. I liked Homecoming because of how they handled Liz Allen. But after that it seems like they just shoehorned MJ in and gave up on anyone else.

I love Zendaya and I do enjoy her performance as MJ. Their love story in the MCU trilogy is pretty meh though. I don’t feel the sparks and emotion between them like I did Andrew and Emma in ASM. The most emotional moment was honestly him choosing to stay out of her life to keep her safe at the end of NWH. I’m definitely hoping the tonal shift we got in that film will set up the next trilogy to tell some more adult stories with emotional stakes.

Their love story in those movies was not very strong. I don’t blame the actors for this as it was just written that way. Maybe it could go somewhere in future movies, but as of right now, both other Spider-man series had better love stories than MCU Spider-man.

I thought it made for a great bittersweet ending. Loved how No Way Home left Spidey off as his most classic status quo we all know him for. Down on his luck, trying to make ends meet, but trying to still do the right thing. Hope this continues into next film. Bring on Daredevil!
