Spider-Man: No Way Home's marketing campaign showed nothing of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire's Spider-Men, and it's only in recent weeks that their respective returns have been publicly talked about by the cast and crew. However, aside from some stills, the only way to see those web-slingers in action is to head to your local theater, as no footage has been officially released online.
After the final trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home was released, an international version appeared to confirm that the returning Peter Parkers had been edited out when The Lizard was blatantly punched or kicked by thin air. In an interview with before & afters, VFX Supervisor Chris Waegner was asked about that apparent edit.
"As filmmakers we are often asked to deliver WIPs and other various media to the marketing teams," he explained. "We pretty much give them what they’re requesting but we don’t see the final assembly until it’s released mainstream. I know the internet went crazy and there were many rumours about it."
We may never know whether that Lizard shot was included to deliberately create speculation online, though there's still no explanation about how that HD footage of Garfield on set surfaced.
In related news, more concept art from Spider-Man: No Way Home has been released, this time showcasing the MCU's Spidey squaring off with the Green Goblin. Clearly, there were once tentative plans for the Statue of Liberty to be destroyed, and that would have made an epic backdrop for the fight between the wall-crawler and Norman Osborn.
