SPIDER-MAN: FRESHMAN YEAR Now Expected To Hit Disney+ In Late 2024 Despite Recent Cancelation Rumors

Rumours continue to swirl about the MCU's future, but despite claims Spider-Man: Freshman Year will be cancelled, we're hearing that it will instead swing on to Disney+ late next year. Check it out...

While Marvel Studios delivered another show-stealing Hall H panel at last year's San Diego Comic-Con, there was another, devoted to their upcoming animated projects, that also drew a lot of attention. First looks at everything from X-Men '97 to Marvel Zombies were revealed, while we also got a sneak peek at Spider-Man: Freshman Year.

The hope had been that the series would take place prior to the events of Captain America: Civil War. Instead, it's set in another world where Peter Parker finds a mentor in Norman Osborn. With Oscorp backing him, the web-slinger will don all manner of costumes, while Harry Osborn, Amadeus Cho, and Nico Minuro are set to join him in high school.

These changes aren't necessarily a bad thing, of course, and we're definitely intrigued to see how this take on the web-slinger differs from what we've seen in the MCU and past live-action movies. Throw in the fact Charlie Cox is set to reprise the role of Daredevil, and the sooner we get to watch this thing, the better.

Last year, there were rumours that Spider-Man: Freshman Year might be cancelled as Marvel Studios looks to once again focus on quality over quantity, but scooper KC Walsh (via Toonado.com) has now assured fans that the plan is still for it to hit Disney+ in 2024.

However, with this good news comes some bad as he adds that we're now unlikely to see the show until late 2024. This hasn't been confirmed by Marvel Studios, and if it's slipped this far down the release calendar, an official update might be a long way off.

As for the already announced second season, it's previously been reported that the studio won't be moving forward with Spider-Man: Sophomore Year until they can gauge interest in this first season.

Spider-Man: Freshman Year is an animated series that follows Peter Parker on his way to becoming Spider-Man in the MCU, with a journey unlike we've ever seen and a style that celebrates the character’s early comic book roots.

Stay tuned for updates.

I'm just tired of Spider-Man in high school. There's so many great stories of him when he's an adult and showrunners are just like, "NOPE. Put him in school again."

@KWilly - we had the opposite issue as little over 10 years ago with the movies wanting him to be anywhere but high school; at least not letting him stay there a whole

I do like the Peter design.

It's very much a combination of classic and contemporary,

That being said, who asked for this??

Are Marvel really that afraid to give us a grown up Spider-Man??

Good. Take your time. Love the art design and the inclusion of Daredevil

@GhostDog - Agreed. We have enough MCU content in the pipeline that they can take however long they need with this. Also, as if it's not totally obvious, but what do we think the inclusion of DD is pointing toward? Could it be "SM4"? Hmmmmmm...

@StSteven - I think it was confirmed that Freshman Year is an alternate timeline.

@ObserverIO - Right. What I meant and didn't perhaps articulate well enough is the inclusion of DD in "Freshmen Year" is possibly (likely if rumors are to be believed) prepping audiences for DD's inclusion in "SM4", not the show itself would be leading into "SM4". Basically, Marvel would be hoping that audiences would see the cartoon version of the team-up and be like "Oh, yeah, I REALLY want to see that in live action in the MCU", thereby building hype for "SM4". That's just speculation on my part, but it does makes sense for Marvel to use their animated projects to get fans hyped up to see live action versions of certain characters and scenarios (i.e. Captain Carter) along with the animated Multiversal scenarios that they've been doing so far (like in "What If...?").

@StSteven - Synchronicity. Hope they don't overlap too much. There's a few different things that they could both do as Spidey/DD Vs. Kingpin stories. Lots of different characters and plots they could bring in from the comics. Plenty to go around between the two.

@ObserverIO - Oh, yeah, totally agree. But I think that the overall concept of a Spidey/DD team-up will be the common thread between the two, along with the likely battle against KP. Otherwise they will likely diverge in a number of areas, such as the age/maturity difference between the two (I imagine a lot of DD calling Peter "kid" in the animated show), and the storylines and characters used. Like you said, there is SO much source material for them to choose from, just on KP alone, that there's no need (and probably no desire) to do the same stories in both instances. PLUS you have the added fact that "Freshman Year" will most likely take place in an alternate universe, so that means that anything from the characters to the scenarios/stories could be totally different (for example Osborn being a mentor to Peter/SM).

So, yeah, I'm not worried about them retreading too much ground between the two. But I do think that there's a reason, out of all the characters that we've seen so far, will be in "FY" it just happens to be DD.
