Things I HATED about The Amazing Spider-Man

From someone who LOVED the film.

It's no secrete that I loved The Amazing Spider-Man film. That doesn't mean there isn't a few things I think they got wrong. And ironically all the reasons people come up with for not enjoying the film are NONE of the things I didn't care for. So here is a short list of some of those things they didn't get quite right.

1. Peter falling through the rotted roof top, that should have never happened. I can't tell you how many comics I've read where Peter would avoid rotten rooftops or traps. I have a comic where Peter specifically says he never needs to worry about were he jumps from or shoots his web because his spider sense would warn him if the ledge was too rotted or the area was too unstable. You could chalk it up to him just getting his powers but that doesn't work with Spider-Man. His spider sense is a natural instinct. He reacts to it completely on instinct. There is no learning curve when it comes to it.

All that aside, he also should have landed on his feet. Just saying, it really bothered me.

2. Why did Doctor Connors want a new arm? To hug his son? To play guitar? So he could clap? This is actually a really important question. Why should we be emotionally invested in a guy who wants his arm back if we don't know why he wants his arm back. The comics have said everything from he could give his son a real hug, to he could hold his son twice as long. That gives him wanting his arm back emotional depth and makes us care not only about him getting his arm back but about the character. The way the film played it out was "I want my arm back...just because."

That couldn't be any more devoid of emotional depth.

3. We never really see Connors transform. I know this might seem like a silly complaint but I really wanted to see the transformation. I've heard they had a hard time visualizing him turning while keeping it PG-13 but I think that's hog wash. We've seen the HULK transform on screen a dozen times and people didn't loose their minds and give The Avengers and the two HULK films an R rating. Again, not seeing him actually transform I think took some of the emotional depth from the character. There was a disconnect between the Lizard and Connors and that's a huge mistake on their part.

4. This is my biggest complaint of all: WHY THE CRAP DID WEBB CUT THE AMAZING SWING SCENE FROM THE TRAILERS?!?!?!?!?!?!

You guys know what I'm talking about. The first person swing scene was by far my favorite thing from the trailers. I go to see it in theaters and he cut it to shreds. The fact we got more of the great scene in the trailers was a huge slap in the face to fans. The first person swing scene lasts about 25 seconds in the trailer and about 8 seconds in the final cut. Preposterous. Who spends two years of their life to make an action film and then cut one of the best parts to shreds? I will never understand that.

And for those who still don't know what I'm talking about watch these:

It starts at 1:43 on this one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oX9ZT3RbYE4

And it starts at the 0:25 second mark in this one.

There is no excuse for that. Did Webb really say something like "this movie has too much action. I'm going to tone it down a bit."

Well anyway, those are the things I hated about The Amazing Spider-Man. With all that said, I still loved the film. The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man are still by far my favorite comic films of all time. But it doesn't mean I can't see the flaws. Here's hoping Webb learned from his mistakes on the first film and is bringing us a flawless Spidey film for part two.

Thanks for reading.

I wish they would have expanded upon Conner's relationship with his family which later becomes strained once he continually becomes the lizard.

I loved the film. But I have to say that the film would have been so much better if they hadn't removed all those scenes. Especially the scene with conners's son and the lair scene.

I gotta go with 0mega. If you have two arms, there's a lot more you can do, not just specific stuff.

1) Mega. MEGA plot hole in the climax. We've seen Conners go into Lizard form, but a few hours later he reverts back to his human and has to inject himself again. Lizard wants to use the same stuff to turn the whole city into Lizards. But, in a few hours they would all revert back to human form. Seeing as how smart Conners is I find it UNBELIEVABLE that he wouldn't have thought that through.

Lizard: "YES, I HAVE FINALLY TURNED ALL OF NEW YORK INTO LIZARDS!!, THEY ARE ALL THE PERFECT PHYSICAL SPECIMENS!!"

A few hours later....

Lizard: "DAMN IT!!!"

2) The school scene at the end completely negates all of the story and character development that took place.
Seriously why? You have an OK story with a ton of really rich character growth for the main hero but then...decide to include a scene where he just ignores the "lesson" he learned and acts like a douche AGAIN. Even AFTER he "learned his lesson". Without this scene the movie would've been great, instead it's just pretty good.

Lol, "those are the best kind" GTFO!

Other than that, I liked everything else in it.

It's a 7 out of 10 movie IMHO.

@ highflyer

Funny you should say that about the deleted scenes, because me and my friends were talking about that movie and said the exact same thing about the deleted scenes (specifically the one with Conners and his son).

Do my eyes decieve me? VIRILE didn't like something about TASM? Everything I knew was a lie.

I agree with the whole Connors family thing. One thing that made Lizard suxh an interesting rogue was that he was a family man. THAT was his most sympathetic trait and I wanted that. For that reason, I didn't feel for him like I did for Alfred Molina's Otto in Spider man 2.

This is something I would've liked to seen.

^ Lol

I think the FPS shot was just for the teaser? I may be wrong, but the one in the first trailer seemed like it was done especially for it.

Why doesn't Peter just use the formula on Captain Stacy?

My issues aren't so much in the story-telling, however much that is rushed, but in the characterization.

Peter is supposed to be a brainiac. In the comics, he designed his webshooters AND the cartridges. Here, he steals the cartridges from OSCORP and makes webshooters around that idea. Not only is that cheating, but it also sets Peter up as a thief. He sneaks into OSCORP, stalks Dr Connors (and is even called out on it when he visits him at home), and drops in on Gwen. Now Peter is definitely not supposed to be normal, but these bits are just downright strange, and not in a good way.

Gwen. I'm learning to like Emma Stone. Really, I am. So the way Gwen is written, she's kind of manipulative in a controlling way. I'm not really opposed to it, so much as curious as to why they decided to make her like that. Gwen has Flash under her thumb. Gwen is an intern at OSCORP with pretty open access to things she probably shouldn't be able to check out. The only thing that really bothered me in the trailer for the second movie was that Gwen seems not only ok with Peter getting shot at, but plays it for laughs. Is this how Marc Webb writes women?

Dr Connors is given the opportunity to steal his arm back, and he does it without a second thought. He is seen here as the unattainable scientist/elitist who we find pretentious and exclusionary. Isn't he supposed to be someone who Peter can confide in, who he can trust, who he can go to for help? I hate to say it, but Spider-man 3 actually got that part right.

I agree with some of your points and i do respect your opinion towards the film but i didnt mind the film. Yes, there where some flaws and i had a major problem with James Horner's soundtrack and a lot of tracks with in the film. I thought some scenes where tedious to sit through and awkward. One scene in particular in which i kept asking myself "why does this scene exist" is when Spider-man has to swing towards Oscorp with the help of the Crane men.

I didnt mind the message Uncle Ben was trying to convey towards Peter however i do feel like the line "With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility" should have been used instead of misconstrued.

I dont mind Curt Connor's motivation for wanting to regrow back his arm. I didnt mind the design of The Lizard while watching the film and not forgetting Todd McFarlanes comic book design of The Lizard may be show cased in a future TASM film since Curt Connor's is still alive in Ravencroft.

Andrew Garfield portraying Peter Parker was brilliant. I like the fact the film developed Gwen Stacey as a better character from the comics and the film gave her character more to do and she wasnt just the love interest. The rest of the cast was fine but i think the end fight should have lasted longer.

The film for me is a solid 7/10.

My major wrongs with this movie are:

1. Too Soon: Half the time whenever something important was happening, all I could think was 'seen it, seen it...' and that kept me from taking things.seriously. I was fully aware of all strings.being pulled, that these were actors following a script. Perhaps if the movie had waited a few more years then I wouldn't have felt this way. However, re-viewings have reduced the problem a bit.

2. Important things are left out: Brief: We're treated to see stuff like Peter getting his glasses or skateboarding, yet his powers aren't explained properly. One of my favorite things about the first Raimi film was that you felt the Amazingness of Peter's new abilities. Slow building up from light wall crawling to major jumps was an epic 'whoa' moment. We were aware of all of Peter's abilities like his Spider sense or how he could crawl on walls and how far he could leap, each explained well. TASM simply had Peter leaping and beating up drunks on a train and breaking stuff. His Spider sense isn't explained(it's barely notable) and we don't know if whether or not his eye sight is improved.

3. Your point about Connor's family.

4. The whole movie was simply a build up for a much more interesting sequel. Two main things I watched this movie for: Peter becoming a better person by the end of the movie and the Untold story about his parents, both things ended up being saved for the sequel.

For that reason, though I think it's a good superhero flick, it's not Amazing.
