Various Spider-Man Writers And Artists Share Thier Thoughts On Andrew Garfield!

Follow the jump to find out what the likes of Mark Millar, Peter David, Joe Kelly and Todd McFarlane think about Sony's Spider-Man casting choice...

Although Sony's choice to cast Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man has so far received a mostly positive response from fans, what do the creators behind the character think? MTV caught up with a few of them and here's what they had to say!

Peter David

"Garfield was excellent as Anton in "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," and if he brings to "Spider-Man" even a fraction of both the intensity and vulnerability that he displayed in Gilliam's latest masterwork, then fans will be more than satisfied with the casting choice."

Joe Kelly

"I thought Garfield was great in Dr. Parnassus - he pulled off a very complicated role, was really sympathetic, and even squeaked in some physical stuff. I like that he's a relative unknown, so he can come to the role without any baggage. Could be a great fit!"

Mark Millar

"I think he's a great choice. I picture-googled him this morning, which made me feel a bit creepy, and looked at about ten consecutive pages of images, which made me seem creepier still. But in some shots he looks like a drawing of Peter Parker. From some angles, he looks like the brilliant Mike Wieringo's Parker, and from others he's like a Romita Snr. Either way, he's a great fit and I loved him in Red Riding."

"I like him and he's British, like Christian Bale in the Batman movies, which in my own deluded way makes me feel like we're gradually reclaiming that big country we somehow lost in 1776. Yes, I know he was born in the States, but he came here when he was four and possession is 9/10 of ownership under British law. Oh, and he was in "Doctor Who" for a couple of episodes, which is also a massive plus for any man."

Todd McFarlane

"Spider-Man is a juggernaut in and of himself, so you have the luxury of getting 500 tests and picking the best talent that will make the character. That's what they're saying they did, and I'm going to take them at their word. They didn't feel pressured to put in a guy everybody knows, who's one of the sexiest guys under 25 or anything. Peter Parker has a skinny neck and isn't the biggest guy on the block. He doesn't usually get picked first when it's time to put together a baseball team at recess. As I look at images of Andrew Garfield, he sort of falls into that category. It looks like he's got the physique for it. He's a little bit of a stringbean, and I think that fits the suit and character."

Didn't know he was British but that doesn't make me feel worried at all. Talent speaks for itself. Here's a video of him receiving a BAFTA for his role in Boy A

Going by that picture of Millar and what he says about Garfield, I can totally buy him as a creep. Just look at that picture.

actually in some ways this guy is growing on me idk why... but as long as they put him in collage and make it semi interesting and don't put him in the marvel cinamatic universe then hand back the rights to marvel and let them do his whole story right, then it might be ok.... we'll see.

I liked Aaron Johnson for the part, but Garfield seems like a nice choice. But still, FRICK THE REBOOT!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh crap, THAT was him in Imaginarium? Christ... now I'm REALLY scared. He's a good actor, but he is NOT Peter Parker.

hey if Millar approves then so be it.lol. I have tremendous faith in this kid, he looks the part and is a good actor. Hopefully he can pull of a NY accent and get down the mannerisms of Parker

Two more years, and then I will judge the film. It is strange that the film is supposed to take place in high school, yet he's much older than a high schooler.

Nice find Josh.

FOX sucks. They don't care if they put out a good movie. They just want to jump onto the tween market and cash in.

Personally I like this choice. He seems to fit the part better than McGuire. I also liked him in Parnassus. He's talented and I like that he is relatively unknown.

@BryEL LOL. A lot of people thought that about McGuire too, I think.

If he gets Mark Millar's seal of approval that's good enough for me! :D

Each of them make some great points as to why he's a good choice though and for now I'm hoping that the reboot will be good...I'm praying that the rest of the cast is as good a choice as Garfield and they go for the right characters with a great (616 inspired) story!

I bet this kid will do great.

There´s just something in that guy what reminds me of Jude Law?!
Jake Gyllenhaal would have been my choice, but i think that he can pull it off!

Aki87: Hell yeah!!! :D

@anil....same here man..same here*nods in agreement. I think its good to have foreign actors play some key roles in American Films, it broadens their potential as an actor/actress. Also they are well trained in the art of acting.

Hey folks, being a Spidey fan not too happy with all the b.s. with the first movies, now a reboot, Disney needs to pull some money out of Mickey's ears and buy the rights back. The whole reason we like these characters in the books is because they are people like us who just happen to have extraordinary powers.
Badmonkey

well.... my powers come naturally. Awesomeness just can't be helped. lol. Great comments guys

i think this kid might be able to do it. he definately has the look and personalty. as long as we get a well directed film with great performances and great effects, i'm fine

I check on Andrew Garfield on a site it said he was born in USA, so why does he have a brithish accent. Since when did Spidey become British ??

@JoshW great find man! agreed for Uncle Ben & Aunt May they're perfect!

As for the love interests in Spidey's world:
Taylor Momsen for Gwen Stacy
Mary Elizabeth Winstead for Mary Jane Watson
AND
Bryan Cranston for Norman Osborn

I just don't get why this can't still be part 4. Spiderman should be like James Bond every ten years a new actor takes over; but the story keeps going. The studios "need" to reboot is just ludicrous.

I'm more and more starting to think this guy is perfect for the job, even though he's too old for the part. Can't wait to see who they cast for the other parts.

I watched Red riding last night and I gotta say this guy is going to be great, he has an intensity that Tobey lacked and i can see all the haters shutting up pretty quick when the first teaser comes out!

Now that the general consensus is that the new movie will be set in college and not high school,it means we can have Mary Elizabeth Winestead as Mary Jane! BOO YAH!
