Who Should Helm The Spider-Man Reboot?

Nikki Finke says fan boys want Cameron to take over the helm, but recent information suggests that Michael Bay is interested in taking over the web-slinging franchise!!!

This from deadline.com:

"There's also much unconfirmed speculation that this new franchise will be in 3D. And the fans also recall that, in 1991, James Cameron wrote a treatment for Spider-Man and now they're wondering if he might helm the reboot. (Sony ended up acquiring his treatment in a legal settlement.)"

If James Cameron gets this opportunity he will turn it into box office gold. The billion dollar mark would just be a stepping stone, the real numbers this movie would take in would be ridiculous.

Could it happen? Yes, it's really not that far out of the realm of reality. Sony already owns the rights to James Cameron's script and could hit the ground running with that script(actually, scrap that last line. The script mentioned was really not that good, if James gets this opportunity then he should definitely not use his last script.

But imagine this: State of the art special effects!
New and improved Green Goblin! Not a Green Mighty Morphin Power Ranger!
A new MJ!
And a Spider-Man that's a smart a##!!!

If this franchise gets rebooted then I say correct what was wrong in the last franchise and improve it. If not just make Spider-Man 4 and who cares.)

Should it happen? James Cameron has gone on record saying the only super hero he would be interested in dealing with is Spider-Man. Yes I think it should happen. With Avatar hitting home runs all over the world why not bring Spider-Man into that type of global arena, it's already there but this would give the franchise a certain boost. James is established, he is not some "to do" director trying to get his feet wet. Give James Cameron a crack at the franchise if he wants it.

That's not the end of the story! I found the following over at thehollywoodinsider.com:

"Michael Bay has also previously expressed interest in taking over the Spider-Man franchise and Seabiscuit director Gary Ross worked on one of the drafts of Spider-Man 4 and is said to be a huge fan of the comic book series."

Yeah, I don't know about Michael taking over. I'm sure Ror will be thrilled but man, that's a stretch. The article also mentions Marc Webb who was behind (500) Day of Summer. Really, at this point, whoever takes over the director's chair is anybody's guess!?!?!?

What say you ComicBookMovie fans? Should James be involved in the Spider-Man reboot or stick to "Avatar"? What about Michael Bay? Sound off in the comments section or vote now!!!

James Cameron is the only person other than raimi who could properly make a Spiderman movie and do it justice.

@jp499: I doubt that. The script that Cameron had in mind was reall not that great. I believe the only people tha can do Spider-man Justice are the producers at Marvel.

He would do it bigger, better, and more epic than Raimi ever did it(Even though I liked his trilogy even 3). I dont think there is any chance of it happening though because he likes to be fresh and completely original and alot of the time write his own stuff also. Should he do it? Hell yes!! Would it be great? Hell Yes!!!! Will he do it? Not a snowballs chance in hell!!

if, Cameron still wants it..but i doubt coz he has so many things in his mind right now. with the success of Avatar and the possible sequel. and Cameron doesnt work just because its in his table. he works because he wants something new to offer to the people. like Terminator 2 and Aliens, Titanic and now Avatar.. and leo's old now. he wants leo to be peter parker back then :D

Cameron does well with his stuff, but I haven't seen him do humor or wit well, which is what SM needs. He does best with large set pieces in which the setting is a character in itself. I think he would do better with an Arkham Asylum, Xmen, or Superman movie.

@Johnny: Is that for real?

This guy could sh** gold at this point in his career. I could see it being a pretty big movie. I just hope he doesn't overdo the CGI affects in this one.

The biggest problem you have is this: you have 4 types of fans involved in possibly going to see this movie.
1) Comic book "fanboys" - hardcore, don't like storyline changes, but will accept them for the sake of a 2-3 hour movie. May see the movie multiple times regardless of how bad it is.
2) Super hero fans - Know enough about the storylines/characters and enjoy the movies or cartoons but are not hard core. Comicbook reading is limited. Are more willing to accept changes but get annoyed still.
3) General movie going public - These are the biggest group. They know close to nothing about backstories and arch nemesis'. They just know that character is a super hero. They just want to see a good movie and might go back if it is good. They rely on the first 2 groups to give them the info about how close to the original story it was and then determine if that plays into them actually liking it.
4)CBM movies are not their favorite thing - Will they go? Maybe. But not opening weekend or at all. Netflix might get a sale from them. They will only go if the #3 group has a strong presence.
My point is this: it has been too soon to reboot a VERY successful franchise. The 1's & 2's got mostly what they wanted so they are happy. The 3's and 4's out there saw a good movie in Spider-man 1,2 , & 3 and have accepted that origin storyline. Suddenly going back in and changing it all will simply make the biggest group say, "OK. I just saw this and liked it. Why see it again? Same movie, same storyline, same characters just told to me differently." Basically you would have serious backlash, in my opinion about Hollywood doing nothing original regardless of who is directing. If James C. can make the 4th one better then that's where you go. Starting over THIS franchise could kill CBM's altogether.

2 Superalex: at last you have said something that didn't make me want to put my eyes out with a letter opener lol j/k

ladies and gents.. I would give this a chance. He could take this to a whole new Dark Knight like level!

Can you imagine if it turns out like Jman said? With a MARVEL COMIC BOOK MOVIE raking in BILLIONS???

Can you concieve of the kind of future that would secure for all of us??

I have nothing against Cameron, but it is Raimi's baby. The one thing I hate in most film sequels in inconsistency. With Maguire, Raimi and the Mary Jane mistake, it was 1 story. Bringing in new people and new plot and "hoping" for a new franchise is dicey. Besides, how many sequels has Cameron done. I really hope this is a ploy from Sony to get something from Raimi...

I loved Avatar but I'm going to have to say a big NO to this - after reading what he wanted to do with the character I really dont think he's the right guy for the job! Its bad enough that Sony are sending Spider-Man back to high school without having Cameron changing the character completely beyond recognition!!!

@ Multi: "Nah, Cameron wouldn't do a SM movie anymore. What appeal does it have for him?"

Do you really think so? Would you mind elaborating a little man? I don't hink I understand because it has been well known that he was interested in Spider-Man. So you think maybe he isn't now?

Cameron wanted to do Spider-man ages ago, but now that he has T2, True Lies, errr Titanic, and Avatar under his belt, he might be able to make an okay Spidey movie. I bet it would be a lot better than the last proposed version of Spider-man 4.

There should not be a reboot at all to begin with. If they can't make another Spidey sequel then fine. But don't redo the Spiderman franchise, the last movies(maybe not the first) were very good and people loved them. I don't know, I'm just finding this hard to believe. I'm not believing this until I actually get 100% solid evidence!

Whatever..get Michael bay for all I care at this point. As long as it stays a full Hight School reboot I have little interest. It would be one thing if any of this meant that Spidey could at some stage tie in with the other Marvel movies but that still wont be the case..so what does anyone gain from this? Apparently the script is already written, its going to be a "contemporary, dark gritty take" and deal with "teenage issues". [frick] off.

HELL NO!

I guarantee Cameron will not stick to the source material. He'll want the movie to be completely original from the comic books. Besides, I think Cameron is exclusively contracted by Fox.

I just hope Sony follows in the same footsteps as Marvel Studios and makes a movie that truly embodies the comics and their characters. Raimi changed up the characters too much in his movies. It's okay to change up the plots/stories of the characters IMO but not the characters themselves. Marvel Studios does this very well.
