Will Marvel Studios Spider-Man Be Miles Morales?

Hollywood Insiders Say The New Spider-Man That Will Be Introduced In The Marvel Movie Universe Won't Be Peter Parker.

I wrote an article last month stating that I believe that Marvel would get Spider-Man back or at least would be able to use him in movies. I also wrote that I believe Dylan O'Brien would be perfect for the role as Peter Parker, and over the past few days the whole world has gone Dylan O'Brien for Peter Parker crazy! I still think he is perfect for Peter Parker, but in the last 24 hours a lot of things have changed. There is a Hollywood source saying that it's another Spider-Man that has caught Marvel's eye.

Jeff Sneider from The Wrap just dropped a potential bomb regarding the next Spider-Man on the Meet the Movie Press podcast, which he co-hosts with Mark Reilly from Schmoes Know.

"This is not set in stone guys, but I'm telling you right now: Spider-Man is not going to be white," Jeff Sneider revealed. When Reilly asked him if that was speculation, Jeff replied, "I am 95% sure."

If Spider-Man isn't going to be white than what will he be? "Spider-Man is going to be most likely black," Jeff stated. "But there is a chance he could also be Latino. 95% sure not white."

Reilly then suggests, based on Jeff's information, that Marvel/Sony should go with Miles Morales instead of Peter Parker. "I don't think it's going to be Peter Parker," Jeff added. "I really feel strongly - Sony has an opportunity to beat Marvel and DC to the punch with sort of a major black comic book movie character. Like I mentioned last week, the e-mails that leaked were perceived to be racist in some quarters. I really think that is going to play into things."

Take this with a grain of salt... but if this is true this will be a game changer. Was this part of the agreement between Sony and Marvel? With Sony keeping Peter Parker under their thumb but allowing Marvel to use Spider-Man in their movies, maybe a different one? Very crazy stuff! I love Peter Parker and he will still be around but this would definitely bring Miles Morales into play.
Miles is a teenage inner city boy who is of Black and Latino heritage who has the great misfortune of becoming Spider-Man. Fans have grown and accepted the new Spider-Man over the last year or so, but that was in the comic books, however on the big screen I don't know. Still a lot of die hard Peter Parker fans out there. Let's just say this is true, then you have to put some thought as to who is going to play Mile Morales. My pick would be Disney's own (because let's not pretend that Disney won't have some say in this) Trevor Jackson, the handsome and multi talented up and coming superstar. The 18 year old is a recording artist who can act, dance, and sing. He also has the charisma to pull off Miles.
He has been in the Disney Channel movie 'Let It Shine' and also featured on tv shows such as 'Eureka' and 'K.C. Undercover' with his real life girlfriend Zendaya Coleman.

Do you know him? I bet Disney and Marvel know him very well. In closing, as a fan of Spider-Man and Peter Parker, I'd be happy, and as an African American I think having a black Spider-Man on the bigh screen would be cool too, especially if they pick this kid! A young, hip, black Spider-Man wouldn't that be something! Either way Peter Parker or Miles Morales which ever one...it's a win win for me. I have a fan-made trailer with Dylan O'Brien as Spider-Man on youtube. It's only fair that a Trevor Jackson Miles Morales one is on it's way!

Yeah no.
The whole point of Civil War is that when he reveals himself to the world and decides which side he's on.
Everyone is like "holy shit it's Spiderman I can't believe he just made that choice"

The general public is gonna be like, "who the [frick] is that"?
Without Peter Parker there's no point to having Miles Morales, that's the sole reason it made such an impact in the comics.
If they do Miles we're gonna need an origin ALL OVER AGAIN, because the general public is gonna be like "WHO THE [frick] IS THIS".

I think us "nerds" sometimes forget that most of the money is made with the GA and they don't read comics.

Spiderman will not be Miles Morales. They aren't going to rest the fate of this multi-billion dollar property on a character who hasn't existed for less than a decade. The press release specifically mentioned Peter Parker too.

This is iffy. First of all, just because they might want to cast a non-white actor, doesn't mean it'd automatically be Miles Morales. Fanboys don't want to hear this, but there's EVERY chance that they could just change Peter Parker's race. I would certainly prefer that over introducing Miles Morales...only because it's been so long since a Spidey movie has actually gotten Peter Parker right.

But I simply don't believe Marvel and Sony would have the balls to do that (though I'd love to see it happen). Peter Parker is going to be the MCU's Spider-Man, and in all likelihood he'll be white.

ANDREW GARFIELD SAID WHEN HE FIRST GOT THE ROLE OF SPIDER-MAN THAT HE THINKS THE NEXT SPIDER-MAN WOULD BE BLACK! HE WANTS THAT! RIGHT NOW HE'S TALKING ABOUT THIS!

WTF are you on about?
What does this have to do with Sony.
Unless we get official word or something based on facts it's all nothing more than speculation.

@AlexanderLykins I'd ask you what's so important to the character of Peter Parker about him being white. To my understanding, Peter Parker is the embodiment of being the "every-man", which is what makes him so relatable and so appealing. But if we're going to place restrictions like "Peter Parker HAS to be white!", that kind of goes against everything he stands for.

To me, that's just as bad as the TASM movies trying to make it so that ONLY Peter Parker could've become Spidey because....something, something, all-knowing parents and magic blood. Ugh.

Race (and magic blood and "destiny" and all that crap) should play no part in what defines Peter Parker. I totally understand why fanboys wouldn't want the change because they like things to be the way they've always been (which is why I'm not interested in throwing out the "Racist!" card here), but sometimes change can be for the better. This has the potential to be one of those times, IMO. It'd really prove that Spider-Man can be anybody, and that's a fantastic message for this character.

Based on what?
Clickbaity rumours?
Yeah real good.

Oh and though TAS series didn't do as good.

Its WAS SONY that brought a series that inspired a generation.

@AlexanderLykins That's certainly true...in real life. But in the movies, unless the film is specifically making some kind of point about race relations (think Selma, or 12 Years a Slave, etc), then race really doesn't play into things.

It's kind of complicated to talk about, but most movie characters really shouldn't be defined by their race. In some cases it makes sense, like Black Panther being African (for obvious reasons) or even Captain America being white (him being any other race in 1940's America would change EVERYTHING about the character and his story).

But Peter Parker? There's nothing about being white that actually matters at all to his character. Him being a genius, a nerd, a bit of an introvert, and a kid that makes mistakes and learns from them are all things that define his character. Those are the basic fundamentals that make him who he is. Him being white has nothing to do with any of that. As long as everything else remains true to the characteristics and personality of Peter Parker...why should the color of his skin matter? That's just background and backstory material, not some core element that makes him who he is.

@AlexanderLykins That's certainly fair enough! Agree to disagree and all that.

I guess to explain myself a little further, I should mention that the only reason Peter Parker was originally drawn the way he was (along with the majority of other comic book characters) was because it was DECADES ago, in a time period where racial diversity was even worse than it is today. EVERY character in pop culture was white, because that was simply the default back then.

So the way I look at it is, if the reasons for making a character like Peter Parker white were so flimsy, why should we stubbornly hold onto that today? Just because an artist chose to go with the flow and simply make Parker look like everyone else, why does that mean we should ALWAYS make him look that way, even when the world we live in today is completely different than it was when the character was first created?

To me, there's just no reason for it. It's doing things a certain way because...that's just how it's always been. Again, in my personal opinion, that's not a good enough reason. To me, that sounds more like an excuse.

Also, I don't like O'Brien for Parker.

I think Logan Lerman would own the role, and I've see some other good casting choices recently, too.... but not O'Brien.

He's right. Queens, where Peter Parker is from is significantly more diverse today than it was in the 60s.
