Suicide Squad was released in 2016 to negative reviews, but even seven years on, the movie will not go away. The #ReleaseTheAyerCut movement maintains a vocal fanbase on social media, and director David Ayer has once again stirred up something of a hornet's nest.
After responding to someone who said the filmmaker's original cut will never see the light of day, Ayer was quick to remind everyone that what we saw in theaters is not even remotely close to his version of the movie.
"Normally you’re absolutely right. This is an extraordinary case of a movie being utterly re-engineered in post," he explained. "It’s not a couple cut scenes being added."
"The nature of the film was fundamentally changed," Ayer continues. "I’m looking you in the eye telling you this. My cut is vastly better."
It's no secret that Jared Leto's Joker was set to have a much bigger, vastly different role, while Harley Quinn and Deadshot's romantic relationship was also going to be better explored. Backstories for Slipknot and Enchantress were scrapped, while Katana and El Diablo had a significantly larger presence in the final act (with the latter actually surviving).
Warner Bros. decided to so drastically alter Suicide Squad after the negative critical response to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but ultimately delivered a total mess. Whether DC Studios would consider releasing the original Suicide Squad is impossible to say, though we'd say it's unlikely.
After all, Zack Snyder's Justice League debuting on HBO Max was meant to put an end to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut, but only created #RestoreTheSnyderVerse in its place.
