THE SUICIDE SQUAD Sets Pandemic-Era Record For An R-Rated Movie From Thursday Night Previews

Warner Bros. and James Gunn's The Suicide Squad got off to a good start at the U.S. box office with $4.1 million from Thursday night preview screenings, setting a pandemic-era record for an R-rated film.

We're still waiting to find out how The Suicide Squad fared on its first official day of release in U.S. theaters, but James Gunn's critically-acclaimed DCEU debut is off to a strong start from Thursday night previews.

TSS took in $4.1 million from preview shows at the North American box office, setting a pandemic-era record for an R-rated release. The movie is estimated to amass upwards of $70 million worldwide over the course of its opening weekend, but some insiders feel that might be a little ambitious.

While vaccines are being rolled out across the country, not everyone feels comfortable returning to theaters with the Delta variant out in force, and the fact that the film is also available to stream on HBO Max at no extra cost could negatively impact its BO performance. Warner Bros. is said to be predicting a somewhat conservative $30 million domestic bow, which is in stark contrast to the $80 million Disney/Marvel estimated Black Widow would take in just last month, for example.

The film currently sits at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes with an 89% audience score.

Really enjoyed the movie…

Not perfect, a lot of the jokes were amusing but I only laughed out a couple of times.

Really loved the characters Gunn decided to play with. The movie has an energy that you won’t find in any other CBM that kept me hooked from the get go. It’s kinetic, frenetic, and all around fun.

Will definitely rewatch. Would prefer to see it in a theater next, maybe Dolby or IMAX. But well done.

I think this number is for r-rated live actions. The japanese anime film called Demon Slayer Mugen Train opened $9.5 million on Friday and it is r-rated too and was in over 1,500 US theaters.

Notice how Waller saying Bloodsport was responsible for putting SUPERMAN in the ICU was a voice dub?

I wonder how many other combinations they tried before settling on Superman.

Although it worked perfectly for the narrative…because STARO was rampaging long enough that a healthy Superman would have responded to that immediately.

Clever by Gunn to at least establish why the justice league didn’t respond.

@IronGenesis - didn’t even think about that. Great point
