We're still waiting to find out how The Suicide Squad fared on its first official day of release in U.S. theaters, but James Gunn's critically-acclaimed DCEU debut is off to a strong start from Thursday night previews.

TSS took in $4.1 million from preview shows at the North American box office, setting a pandemic-era record for an R-rated release. The movie is estimated to amass upwards of $70 million worldwide over the course of its opening weekend, but some insiders feel that might be a little ambitious.

While vaccines are being rolled out across the country, not everyone feels comfortable returning to theaters with the Delta variant out in force, and the fact that the film is also available to stream on HBO Max at no extra cost could negatively impact its BO performance. Warner Bros. is said to be predicting a somewhat conservative $30 million domestic bow, which is in stark contrast to the $80 million Disney/Marvel estimated Black Widow would take in just last month, for example.

The film currently sits at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes with an 89% audience score.
