THE SUICIDE SQUAD Star Daniela Melchior Reveals That Her Character Originally Controlled Birds

Ratcatcher 2's ability to control rodents comes in very handy in The Suicide Squad, but actress Daniela Melchior has now revealed that her character, Cleo Cazo, originally had a very different power-set.

For many, Ratcatcher 2 was one of the biggest highlights of The Suicide Squad, and without getting into spoilers, her ability to control rodents ends up turning the tide of the final battle in a major way. However, it sounds like the character almost had a very different power-set.

During an interview with The Daily Dead, actress Daniela Melchior was asked about Cleo Cazo's rather unusual ability, and revealed that she was initially told that the character would control birds.

"When I was getting ready to audition for The Suicide Squad, the original information that I had was that the character would control birds. So I was like, 'Okay, that would be fun.' I just immediately thought of Hitchcock and The Birds. I was like, 'Okay, this could be deadly, but it could be fun, too.' But then before my audition day, the production team sent me an email saying, 'We can't wait to have you on set. By the way, we're having rats on set, so we can’t wait to see your reaction.'"

"That was the first and the last time that I thought about it," she continued. "And I just stayed focused on this opportunity in the meantime. But I ended up getting really friendly with the rats. James posted a photo from that audition day because I had this rat on my hoodie and James was taking pictures. It ended up being really fun."

Birds don't get a very easy time of things in the movie (James Gunn has taken to Twitter to assure fans that he loves our feathered friends), but it might have been a different story with Birdcatcher(?) watching their backs. We're not actually sure whether Melchior would have played an established DC Comics character with a few tweaks or a brand new creation, but everything worked out for the best - we got to meet Sebastian!

Have you guys had the chance to watch The Suicide Squad yet? If so, what did you think? You can check out our 5-star review below.

@ElvenKingSlayer - I wonder if that's the common consensus? That even tho this SS is so good, GOTG is still better.

@KWilly - Perhaps and maybe because no matter how many cool characters tSS has, Gotg has more likeable characters with more heart.

Well to be fair, putting comic book accuracy to the side, birds would've been more realistic and practical than rats. They're everywhere, they can be in large sizes and they can get to any spot they need to be pretty easily and rapidly.
I had to suspend disbelief when the rats came out in such a large number, stormed Starro and overwhelmed it in a short time.

@Fares - Also, sorry Harley, but

@Fares - 1) rats can go literally anywhere they can fit their heads through.

2) there are over 2 million rats in New York city alone.

@Origame - Yeah but like birds can reach Starros eye in 2 seconds. And those were like 10 thousand rats in a single city block that popped out simultaneously on the spot.

The Suicide Squad was fun to watch but I thought the Rat Tsunami was a little over the top. Really did nothing for me in the movie just rolled my eyes.

@DoubleD - I agree. I prefer GOTG where the heroes danced then held hands. That was much less of an eye roll for me.

She’s beautiful, and was great, my only problem with the movie was I really hated to see Boomer get cashed out, but other than that I loved it. Probably 2 on my list of Gunn Movies.
1. GOTG 2 ( Loved the Rooker / Pratt moments )
2. The Suicide Squad
3. Slither (was hilarious and gorey I can’t help it)
4. GOTG
5. Super

If it were birds we would have been robbed of the Sebastian and Bloodsport interactions and that would be a crime worthy of a Belle Reve sentence.

I can’t think of a bird villain from DC so I’m guessing they just told her it was birds when she auditioned because rats would be way more of a turn off for an actor.

The rats functioned so well in the theme of the movie about giving even the lowest life forms a valid purpose. I actually shed a [frick]ing tear at that.
