THE SUICIDE SQUAD's Joel Kinnaman Says Rick Flag Was Almost Written-Out Of The Script - SPOILERS

Rick Flag was one of only four characters from David Ayer's 2016 film to return for The Suicide Squad along with Harley Quinn, Amanda Waller and Boomerang, but actor Joel Kinnaman has now revealed that it almost didn't happen.

The Swedish-American actor was shooting his Apple TV+ series For All Mankind when he got the call from Gunn, and the scheduling conflict meant he almost had to pass on the opportunity to reprise the role. Fortunately, the hurdles were overcome, and Rick Flag was able to lead Task Force X into battle once again.

“My manager, Shelley Browning, and my agents, Boomer Malkin and Andrew Finkelstein, definitely won the agent Oscar for this because it was a really, really tricky scheduling situation,” Kinnaman tells THR. “And I also have to thank [For All Mankind creator] Ron Moore so much and everyone at Apple for helping out. Warner Bros. was in first position, but they couldn’t budge because it was such a big cast. So it was a really tricky scheduling thing, and it took them several months to figure it out."

At one point, Warner Bros. execs advised Gunn that he might have to write Flag out of the script altogether. "There were actually people at Warner Bros. that told James, ‘We might have to rewrite this because the scheduling is not going to work out.’", added Kinnaman. "So I was definitely on edge, but then they figured it out.”

Warning: Major SPOILERS from this point on.

Unfortunately, Corto Maltese marked Flag's final mission. The former military man was killed by Peacemaker after threatening to leak the Starro files, and while it wouldn't exactly be unheard of for a comic book movie character to return from the dead, the chances of us seeing Kinnaman back in the role are very slim.

The Suicide Squad is now playing in theaters and on HBO Max. You can check out our 5-star review below.

@marvel72 - Plus, out of all the deaths, those two hit hardest because I really liked the characters and actors in the roles.

WB does not know how to transition their DC properties into live action. Even with James Gunn the film just didn't hit for me. I think the costume designs and just the lack of interesting characters can't work in live action. The more I see DC trying to bring in more obscure characters to life the more silly they are when they show up on the big screen.

@SonOfAGif - That's why I'm preferring DC's output now personally more than Marvel. Marvel always feels self-ashamed and self-deprecating about the movies, like they're trying to neuter the silliness as much as they can to appeal to as mass an audience as they can. Especially with the irony-poisoned jokes which are intolerable. DC, god bless them, fully embraces the silliness of their source material and isn't afraid to wear it like a badge of honor.

@IronSpider101 - LoL. You cannot be serious? Doomsday, Lex Luthor, Ares, Cheetah, and Jared Leto's Joker was embracing the "silliness" of their source material? Please. WB has neutered what made their heroes and villains so unique in the first place by trying to ground them in realism. Then when they try to make Starro work it falls flat because they made every other outlandish character "grounded" in reality.

@SonOfAGif - but i do like how Gunn treat the suicide squad. I might be the minority and you might be right.

@SonOfAGif - Post-Snyder DC. So Shazam, The Suicide Squad (2021), Aquaman, Birds of Prey and yes, Wonder Woman '84. They're varying degrees of quality, but they all embrace the silliness whole-heartedly. Snyder DC had the same problem as Marvel in that they were made to appeal to manchildren who feel insecure about watching this type of material. Except whereas Marvel is "Huhuhuhuh we're in on the joke too guys, isn't this stuff silly and lame?" Snyder just tried to edge it up. But after he was ousted they've really bounced back strong. Even a failure like WW84 I have something of a respect for because it was taking chances.

And none of them are grounded in realism. Nor does Starro feel out of place amongst them.

@IronSpider101 - WW84 was dreadful. Nothing to respect.

@Liverpool4life - I have more respect for "bad but failed taking chances" than I do "medicore because it wanted to be mediocre" which is Marvel's entire M.O.

@IronSpider101 - Mediocre because it wanted to be mediocre is Marvel's MO? Tell me you're jealous of Marvel without telling me you're jealous of Marvel. Suicide Squad, Batman v. Superman, Justice League, Jonah Hex, Green Lantern, WW84, and Birds of Prey all say hi.

@SonOfAGif - Why would I be jealous? I made none of these films.
