CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS Creative Team On Why Meg Donnelly Would Be "Great" As DCU's Supergirl (Exclusive)

Following recent reports that Meg Donnelly is among those being eyed by DC Studios to play Supergirl, we asked the on Infinite Earths creative team why they think she'd be a great fit for the coveted role.

By JoshWilding - Jan 18, 2024 10:01 AM EST

Earlier this month, we learned that Milly Alcock, Emilia Jones, and Meg Donnelly are all in the mix to play the DCU's Supergirl. The character will debut in Superman: Legacy before taking centre stage in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

Donnelly has an advantage over her rivals as she's already lent her voice to Kara Zor-El in the animated Legion of Super-Heroes and Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths movies.

We recently caught up with the latter movie's creative team, director Jeff Wamester and executive producers Butch Lukic and Jim Krieg, and asked for their thoughts on Donnelly's possible DCU casting and the fact Jensen Ackles - the Tomorrowverse's Batman - is also a fan favourite pick to join the live-action franchise.

This is a great cast. You’ve got Jensen Ackles as Batman who is a fan-favourite to play that character in the DCU and Meg Donnelly who is auditioning for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. That must be great to see.

Jim: Oh, she’d be great. So would Jensen.

Jeff: She would be great. You know, when she was in Legion, she had that speech at the end with her mom and we were in the booth saying, ‘Oh my God. That was such a good performance!’

Jim: She had one movie to make you fall in love with Kara. You’ve got to care about Kara when you get to Crisis. That’s why Legion exists to introduce Kara and, also, when do you get to see the Legion?

Butch: If we had a couple more movies, we could have had Supergirl in before we get to Crisis, it would have been good. Ultimately, I think it’s all worked out. Centrally, she is part of Crisis on Infinite Earths and, in part two, she definitely gets a bigger role in the movie than in the first one.

Donnelly would be a phenomenal live-action Supergirl and, while her role in this first Crisis movie is relatively limited, she'll clearly have more to do in the upcoming sequel. The actress looks (and sounds) the part and is familiar enough with the character to potentially give her a headstart over Alcock and Jones.

We'll bring you more highlights from our interview later today, though you can watch it now in the player above.

Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part One is now available on Digital and arrives on 4K UHD in limited edition SteelBook packaging and Blu-ray starting January 23.

Parts Two and Three of the Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths trilogy will debut later in 2024.

Based on DC's iconic comic book limited series 'Crisis on Infinite Earths' by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez, join DC Super Heroes from across the multiverse in the first of three parts of DC’s new animated film Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part One, which marks the beginning of the end to the Tomorrowverse story arc.

Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, DC and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, the all-new, action-packed DC animated film features some of DC’s most famous Super Heroes from multiple universes including Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, who come together to stop an impending threat of doom and destruction.

I like the idea of Siri from the Witcher as Super Girl.

@slickrickdesigns - No thanks, after seeing her in Witcher and how writers made her the main character over Cavill,I can see why he left.

@marvel72 - lol. Wasn’t her fault and she was a decent actor. Nothing special but good enough to fit the role.
I know comic book accurate is something to hate on nowadays but she’d be more accurate than what they did in the Flash movie.

This makes me want to go back and watch the Arrowverses Crisis version all over again. While not the best adaptation, it still tried and I'll give it that much.

@Nolanite - yeah. It was a big event to pull off with basically no budget. Props for that.

See, this is what I like about the tomorrowverse. They weren't against diversity, but there had to be a reason why.

Why is there a movie centered around Kara instead of superman? Not because she's a woman but because of her perspective of having lived on krypton then suddenly being in a new environment.

Why is this universe focusing on Jon Stewart and not Hal Jordan? Nothing to do with race, but having Hal be a veteran perspective on the Corp while Jon is the rookie.

And they never feel the need to race or gender swap.

And here it's just "she's an amazing actress with great range" as opposed to "we gotta get a woman in there".

Why is this so hard?

She definitely could fit the bill.
I didn't realize Kara would make her first appearance in Legacy. I hope it's just the end of the film because this movie is already crowded.

I don’t think there’s any conformation she will be appearing. More assumption because apparently she will show up at some point in the universe before her solo film

If it is Legacy then I agree with you in regards to showing up briefly at the end. Hopefully given they haven’t cast her yet and filming will be taking place soon, that would be the extent of her role should she appear!

Interesting that she made an appearance at the Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 premiere...

She was good enough in Winchesters, and she sure has the house of El butt chin, so I’d be happy with her being chosen.
