As we prepare ourselves for a new era of DC storytelling on screen, there continue to be a lot of unanswered questions about DC Studios' DCU. While some actors have been ousted from their respective roles, others will stick around, and almost all of the projects announced yesterday don't currently have creative teams attached to them.
A quick look on social media, or this very site for that matter, shows that there's a great deal of confusion surrounding whether this is a reboot or not, while continuity-conscious fans have been left scratching their heads.
We're going to have to wait and see what happens, but Variety has shared at least some of the names who are part of James Gunn's writers room putting together his and Peter Safran's vision for the DCU.
Those names include Drew Goddard (The Martian), Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight), Christina Hobson (The Flash), Christal Henry (Watchmen), and comic book writer Tom King (Batman). Gunn reportedly told journalists that at least some of these writers will continue working on DCU projects, with Henry, for example, co-showrunning Waller.
Some filmmakers are said to be "very close" to signing on to at least a couple of DCU movies, while it's also been revealed that the current plan is for DC Studios to release two movies and two TV shows each year (which should ensure a quality over quantity approach to storytelling). Gunn and Safran are said to be adamant that movies won't begin production until scripts are finished.
It's also noted that the projects we've seen will run through 2027.
With Elseworlds movies like The Batman II and Joker: Folie à Deux set to receive clear branding in future that differentiates them from the DCU, the trade reveals that J.J. Abrams and Ta-Nehisi Coates' Superman movie - revolving around a Black Clark Kent - is still in development as a standalone project.
How excited are you about the new DCU?
