On the heels of Netflix renewing The Witcher for a Fourth Season, Henry Cavill quits the role of Geralt of Rivia, and has Liam Hemsworth replace him as The White Wolf.

Henry Cavill has been all over the news since his return as Superman was made official last Monday. And the news continues to hit as Henry Cavill took to Instagram this morning to announce his retirement of Geralt in the Netflix series The Witcher. Cavill, played the lead role over the past 2 seasons with an upcoming third season next year. The fourth season will see him put down the medallion and two swords, and will ultimately see Liam Hemsworth, best known for The Hunger Games series, take on the role of The White Wolf.

Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the popular Witcher books and video games first started airing on the majorly popular streaming serivce in 2019 and quickly exploded in popularity, with many praising Henry Cavill’s stoic but charming take on the white-haired witcher himself, Geralt. This took Cavill's Hollywood attritibutes to a whole new level. In the first season, The Witcher has become a hugely successful  franchise for Netflix, leading to more seasons, anime, movies, and even action figures. But the star of the original series won’t be sticking around as the fantasy franchise grows.

According to the Witcher's Twitter, they said

It’s official: The Witcher is returning for Season 4, and Henry Cavill will be handing his swords to Liam Hemsworth as the new Geralt of Rivia after Season 3. Welcome to the Witcher family, @LiamHemsworth!

While Henry Cavill also added to the story

Some news to share from The Continent…

My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4. In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam's take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men.

Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.

It seems as though Superman will ultimately take up all of Cavill's time, and we're most likely seeing a lot more of The Man of Steel in the upcoming years.

Man this sucks. I love seeing him back as Superman, but as witcher fan, I also think he was a perfect fit for Geralt, especially since he's a fan of it himself.

I'd be at a little okay with it if I could see Liam Hemsworth in the role, but unfortunately at the moment I can't.

This is weird, I wonder what's the real reason behind it.

Happy with this. It will be great to see more of Cavill as Superman, and Hemsworth can use the opportunity to build upon his career. He’s a bit of an under appreciated actor. He would be a good candidate for Bond, too.

Two main things to note here:

1.: Henry is legit committed to the character of Superman.
2.: Henry remains classy as f#ck at all times.

@DrReedRichards - cavill just joined the new guy ritchie film, and he has that highlander from the john wick guy in the workds too, so he might have genuinely been too busy. but yeah if they get someone talented to write/direct superman, leaving witcher would absolutely be worth it

@tmp3 -

I've seen McQ's name being mentioned here, and I can't quite figure out why. Because he directed him in MI:Fallout? I mean, heck, since we're talking that franchise, why not Brad Bird?

tmp3 - 10/29/2022, 5:03 PM
@DrReedRichards - i feel like mcq can make optimistic, crowd-pleasing action films on a level no-one else can right now. also based on maverick and the halo jump scene, he can film guys in the sky in a way no-one else quite can. bird also doesn’t want to do ip work and his last 2 films were misses.
that david yates superman rumor on twitter is so ungodly bad, i’m happy it’s from an unreliable source since that would be awful

@tmp3 -

There's just no way WB is trusting Yates with their attempt to salvage the name (and brand) of DC's poster boy, least of all after how laughably unprofitable and panned his Fantastic Beasts have been. Warner might be dumb, but they're not THAT dumb...

...right?

@DrReedRichards - McQ and Cavill pitched a MOS sequel during one of the old regimes that would've featured Supergirl, Brainiac and would've included set up for a Green Lantern movie but WB turned them down.

Oh, so he was legit interested in continuing Cavill's story. That's news to me, but yeah, I can see now why he's been on the fans' wishlist.

Whoa, I have been loving the show. The die hard fans of the show are really not going to like this and likely be very vocal about it.

i don’t think cavill’s a great actor or anything, but liam hemsworth is one of the most boring actors i can think of. real downgrade

Did not see that coming.... he seemed so dedicated to the role. Well let's hope this means more superman alot quicker. Socks for wither though.

@UniqNo - it's also kind of weird to announce this before the release of season 3??? Is this them trying to get more of an audience? Or that production riding the Cavill wave?

It's also strange how this has already been renewed for a season 4 and we're still waiting on an announcement for Sandman season 2.

This is all kinda strange.

Unless something shockingly well comes out with Liam as Geralt, I do not see this continuing on after season 4. I reckon people will turn on it very quickly.
After all, we know the one reason why so many watched it.

Heard he is a big fan of the games so after what came out about the people behind the show, yeah not surprising

Sad news for the show, but I wish we knew what the DC plan is with Superman?

Like, is this the same Superman, you know, the one who has already died, put Lex in jail, fought Batman and the Justice League. Point being off this is a continuation of the asunder Superman, what is left? What stakes are there if character has died already?

I like Cavill, I do, but with the launch of DC Studios we should have had a fresh start.

Superspecialawesomeguy - 10/29/2022, 5:40 PM
@Knightrider - Might not be a popular opinion right now but I still wish that they had recasted him tbh (I thought David Corenswet was perfect for the role personally).

Liam is such a downgrade and I personally wish that Netflix cancelled the Witcher show over letting him replace Henry Cavill.

His decision to step down must come from the fact that he's an avid fan of the games and lore which is why he was very opinionated about it being portrayed faithfully.

And these current news could maybe add to why he chose to depart, maybe.

Regardless, The Witcher definitely won't feel the same without him. I liked his take on the character.

He's never heard the saying "Don't quit your day job"?

Gunn and Safran don't start work until Tuesday.

He's either dumb as cold piece of toast or he's had an unofficial confirmation from the studio heads to-be that all systems are go.

Not sure which is worse.
Spawnnn
Spawnnn - 10/30/2022, 6:58 AM
@ObserverIO - Most likely he will be a big part of the development of the next Superman and with five upcoming projects on his schedule it makes sense, to cut the shitty Netflix series out.
Dude has earned a standing and the big money. Why shouldnt he do it?

Then there's no point watching it anymore.

Lowkey great news tbh.
