Is there any chance at another return?

With nearly four having passed since The Man of Steel last flew across our screens, it doesn't look as if he'll take flight again anytime soon. While fans debate who should take on the next incarnation of Kal-El, producers balk at dropping their grip over appropriate screen writing to get the job done. Batman was re-introduced in a manner that allowed even people who never followed the comics enjoy and become fans.

Personally, I'd like the kid gloves to come off. With modern times calling for darker, deeper, character-driven, of the graphic nature comic entertainment, Superman doesn't need re-booting... He needs to show us what's so damned super about him in the first place.
Just think about it. He's from Krypton, so the space/alien content is already there. We need Superman to be challenged in a way not since Zod and co. One way to do this is to not start over, but give us the return of a cliff hanger-(set the story up as a trilogy, with an introduction of an industructable force in the first; a seemingly hopeless plight of fate in the second part; finally ending with insurmountable odds in the finale.) This would no doubt place the supporters of Superman in the loop to see just what happens next. Along the way, give us what we crave, the return of Zod, Brainiac, and finally, Doomsday. Lois, Jimmy, Lex, Clark et. all can have their own subplots, but they should never deviate from The Last Son of Krypton.
Superman needs to be super. He needs to be able to UNLEASH the hidden emotion, the intellect, and the power that's flowing through his alien veins.
The darkness can come from his trying to "save the world from an apocolyptic destruction", set forth by a force of nature that mankind's armies, nukes, etc. cannot dream of containing.
Batman laid the blueprint, Ironman built the mach, now Superman needs to soar.

I'm totally with you but as I point out again and again (and I'm sure people hate me repeating myself) some elements NEED to be tweaked. For instance, we've seen the same characters time and again, and there's no mystery there. At least in the new Bat Franchise, Nolan took liberties that made the story new again, like with the introduction of a childhood sweetheart as well as the fact that Batman was trained by Rhas Al Ghul.

Things that were "cute" back in the day, would put people off now. For instance, if Lois loves Superman, but straight up ignores Clark-doesn't even DETECT something about him that she might love, people wont buy it. That's one thing I love about Smallville, Lois is head over heels for Clark, despite the presence of costumed vigilantes. I'd like to see a similar dynamic used in the movie. Also, Jimmy needs to not be such a geek. He really serves no purpose. Again I defer to Smallville, where he was the same age as Lois and Clark (I'd even go for a few years younger) AND is REASONABLY cool. Then there are other issues: The spitcurl has not been used since "Happy Days", Clark needs a LEGITIMATE way to conceal his identity, the underwear outside the costume scheme has to go...these are all things that wont translate as anymore because audiences are too edgy. The character should remain the same, because his altruism and selflessness is timeless.

BTW it's my theory that WB is testing the waters for a Smallville big screener with this "Metropolis" TV movie thing they have going on...don't you think? Why invest enough movie for a telefilm otherwise?

TheDurkinKnight: You make some valid points, particularly regarding the way Nolan took an element of the Batman saga, and gave new background story, added to what we knew already providing flavor, and introducing other characters from the Batman universe. That's what I meant when I said give us what we crave; Villains and characters who've always been a part of Superman's history, but never were given bigscreen treatments. Sooo much could be done with Brainiac, it's not funny. and by way of introducing HIM, others could follow and audiences would accept them because it's fresh. As I've stated, Superman is an Alien... There's certain to be others out there who'd make their way to our universe/planet. Fantastic Four II blew a major opportunity by not giving us the Galactus from the comics-with all the CGI/SFX done in today's Hollywood, there's no excuse for it. Silver Surfer and the Fantastic Car were done admirably. What would we give to see a living, breathing, Doomsday, like the orges from LOTR? WB need to just let it fly.

The truth is Superman is far too profitable to not be made again, it is just a matter of when. And I have no desire to see a Doomsday movie unless they do the whole story which would require three movies just for the Doomsday story.

Im the biggest superman fan ever and even I know that not everything belong on the sliver screen I mean come on what the fans want in a superman live actions movie is just not going to happen for three reason

1 Money the money it would take to do the Doomsday story would take over half of the taxes payer money

2 aging actor a lot of people forget That actor do age revees was in his late 40s when he did superman 4

3 Copyrights the movie can't follow the comics word for word or else they get sue because even though DC owns the comics the writers own the ideas

I think there is a good chance to see this happen, but SuperMike is right. It does come down to money. Superman Returns wasnt' that bad, but the script could of been better, & could did away with the Lex option. Could of made him President and introduce some new characters which could have been lead to a sequel with Darkside. Now that could of been astoudinng.

@SupermanReturns2 that pic of reeves looks bad ass, awesome pic, and sadly i have to agree with supermike on this one...

I can say i agree with all you guys everyone makes pretty good points... Like Superman needs action ... As for the costume we need to keep the original... Shoot i was pissed they didn't have Wolverine in his Yellow or brown costume...

@ Spock - What u said would have been a great idea Lex Luthor would have been president and then the fun would begin.. I E ... Darksied , or Braniac, or LOBO the main man...

And Superman is a money cow they need to make another one and just continue with it make it a couple of years forward

TheDurkinKnight - 7/7/2009, 1:05 PM
@Supermike...Reeve was 35, when IV came out. He was only about 24 when the first movie came out which was not even ten years before...the aging thing could easily be addressed by making a younger guy look slightly older in the first installment. Plus if they make the movies in quick succession, then it would be a non issue. Also, considering some of the other movies that have been made with MUCH bigger stories, I don't think Doomsday would cost too much. For isntance, LOTR was was made and that surely required more special effects than this movie would.
Supermike
Supermike - 7/7/2009, 1:44 PM
I pretty sure he was 40 at least that what it say in his profile as for LOTR and superman you can't compare the two LOTR of the ring had like 5 people the doomsday story you would have the JLA the JSA and you would need the Legion plus war world
TheDurkinKnight
TheDurkinKnight - 7/7/2009, 9:39 PM
Oh true dude, I forgot about the JLA and JSA...honestly I don't see them being included though not only because of budget, but because I think they'd want to keep the focus on Supes.
TheDurkinKnight
TheDurkinKnight - 7/7/2009, 9:42 PM
BTW, I think my next article will be about how Christian Bale needs his ass kicked. I didn't like Routhe as Supes, but at least he's willing to do it again, crybaby bitches like Bale and Maguire need smackdowns. Violence is the only answer. And if it's not, you're not asking the right question.
Tobuttica
Tobuttica - 7/8/2009, 3:03 PM
Hey Mike, you don't need all the extra characters for a Doomsday story. Sure, the comics had the crappy JLA getting their asses kicked, but it should just be Doomsday and Superman fighting it out. I could see a normal Superman movie for the first hour, hour and a half, with snippets of Doomsday breaking from his tomb, and them coming face to face with Supes for a kick ass half hour all out nothing but action brawl. The Prologue for the movie can have the birth of Doomsday(his true origin, not the shitty Smallville one) then have the tomb crash land on Earth and wipe out the dinosaurs or some shit like that. Then flash 4,000,000 years later, Superman saves people, takes on some lesser bad ass like, I dont know, Metallo, cameos by John Henry Irons, Cadmus', and maybe the Eradicator to set up the second movie with the four Supermen. That's what I want to see. As much as I liked the Superman/Doomsday animated movie, they shit the bed. They could have stretched it out and made serious money. Not only that, but they had an effing clone of Supes. That shite don't happen. When you directly clone him, you get Bizarro. Now if fake Supes would have turned out to be Bizarro, it would have been killer.
Supermike
Supermike - 7/9/2009, 5:15 AM
But the problem will always be is that Doomsday is a gimmick character he was only made to kill superman that it the reason smallville ending these season suck as well as the Superman doomsday movie is because they both got doomsday right that how doomsday is suppose to be betrayal rather the fans like it or not ask anyone who grew up on the death of superman story and they will tell you how overrated doomsday is
