Jon Hamm Says That He's Too Old To Play Superman!

While once again denying the recent rumors that he'll play Superman in the Christopher Nolan penned reboot, the actor has revealed one very specific reason why he thinks he's not a good choice for the role...

A couple of months ago, a rumor was started online that the Mad Men actor was Warner Bros. top choice to portray the Man of Steel in the upcoming reboot which is believed to be set for release in 2012. After a few sites made the dubious decision to report this as if it was new news this week, it seems those who are interviewing Hamm about his new movie, The Town, picked up on it and decided to find out whether or not it's true.

Well, as he did in another recent interview the actor once again insists that he hasn't been approached by movie bosses and seems less keen on them getting in touch because at 39, he's says that he's just too old to play the part!

"I certainly haven't been informed of that. They might want to run that by me. I don't know, I think unless Superman's power was the power of being really old...I maybe aged out of that competition."

What do you guys think? Is Hamm too old to play Clark Kent/Superman or would a slightly more mature actor like him actually be a better choice than someone younger? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place!

I predict SNL will run a skit on his being too old for Superman.

I'd be inclined to agree with the guy. However maybe they should give him a screen test. What've they got to lose?

In all honesty, the guy doesn't look 39. I've not really seen him in much but after checking out the trailer for The Town (a movie I'm really looking forward to seeing when it's released here on the 24th) I can see why people want Hamm to play Superman. However, a younger actor might be the best way to go if they're planning a trilogy and JLA movie!

Lol
It's not that he;s too old to play him in a movie, he's to old the carry a series
having a 39 year old as superman is ok but by they time they make ...say the 3rd movie he'll be way to old
we need someone young like 28 years old (his age in the end of john burne's man of steel

Why does Superman have to be young? Kryptonians do age.

The only reason why Superman should need to be younger is if they're tying it in to other DC movies. If it isn't a new Superman, just starting out, in order to tie in to Batman, then it should be a [frick]ing MAN'S MAN.

There's no reason he can't be both. A man in his early 30's can still look manly without looking old.

Jon Hamm looks like he's in his 30's. Anytime I've ever seen him outside of Mad Men, he looks five years younger than he does on that show. If Welling can play Smallville Clark into his 30's, Hamm can play Superman into his 40's.

@Dynamo His lifespan changes with different writers.
For example in superman Prime he just keeps getting stronger as he gets older. Most say that he will live until the 853rd century. In legion of superheroes he has already died.
I don't see the need for everyone in every movie to be young.
Take Iron Man for example. Robert Downey jr. is in his late 40's, that movie was fantastic. Jon Hamm is only in his late 30's, not to mention Christian Bale is only 3 years younger than him.

I KNOW IF ENOUGH PEOPLE TALK ABOUT IT HE'S GOING TO GO TO SNL AND DO A SKIT ON IT WITH HIM IN A SUPERMAN COSTUME, IF HE BELIEVES HE'S TOO OLD HE MAY JUST PUT ON THE SUIT TO PROVE IT TO THE WORLD HE'S NOT CUT OUT TO BE SUPES, BUT IF IT BACKFIRES AND ACTUALLY SHOWS HIM AS A POSSIBLY GOOD SUPERMAN ALL THE MORE BETTER FOR US,HECK HE COULD PLAY BATMAN TOO IF HE WANTED TOO

i won't be watching it if they cast that prick tom(bell end)welling.

tom welling won't even get called to audition for the role.

they've ten years of his comedy routine to watch on dvd.

that is more than enough evidence to know not to give him the role.
jbak368
jbak368 - 9/18/2010, 2:55 PM
If anyone can show me proof that Welling is an actor, and not just a pretty boy on a show meant to appeal to high schoolers, then maybe we can think about Welling as Supes. As it is, there isn't a chance in hell Nolan would cast him. He probably won't cast Hamm either, because he's good at surprising us, but Hamm would be a million times better than [frick]ing Welling.
UltimaRex
UltimaRex - 9/18/2010, 2:55 PM
Of course Hamm is too old.

WELLING is too old.

Check it, Reeve played a 30 year old Superman when he was 25. Routh played a 29 year old Superman when he was 25. This Superman is most likely 25. The actor has to be in his mid twenties for this to work. Not to mention able to carry a movie (sorry Welling).

Might I suggest (yet again) Armie Hammer.

Right age, right look, right chops. Even the right height.

Armie Hammer FTW.

No argument there from me.

WB aint going to cast Tom Welling just be happy with him at Smallville until it ends.

we all know Jon Hamm is 39 but he does not look it. we got 20+ year olds playing teenages in High School movies.

If only he was younger and taller he would be great!
Superguy1591-Cavill would be AWESOME! That's something WE can agree on!

If they were planning on doing a one-shot Superman movie, then Hamm would be a fine choice. But, if WB wants a new franchise, then Hamm's age would get in the way. And even if he was younger, I don't think his role on Mad Men would allow him to take the role. Hamm's just an unrealistic choice, plain and simple.

That said, I would take him in a heartbeat over Welling, who is one of the few actors who would make me not see MOS if he was cast.

Tom Welling is 33 himself. By the time the movie got made he would be 35 and sequels???? Go younger

I agree. I'd like to see him in a Superman period peice in the same vain as Sky Captain.

Cavill FTW.
With 1 inch soles in his shoes,he is 6'2. With soles AND small lifts he is the perfect height 6'3. Of course he can bulk up. Combine the set pics from The Cold Light of Day and the promo shot of Cavill from The Immortals and you have a Superman physique.

Superman period peice thats not a good idea. u want Superman in the modern times if u cast Jon Hamm in the near future.

@Superguy1591

Henry Cavill FTW

I am so sick of this bullshit. WHO EVER SAID SUPERMAN WAS A [frick]EN KID IN HIS 20's ??!!

Typically Superman is one of THE OLDEST superheroes in the DCU, he just ages slowly which is why his hair doesn't get grey very quickly and his wrinkles take much longer to set in. But his age is consistantly OLDER than the other heroes.

I still say Hamm was one of the best choices ever mentioned so far. Cavill does look like Superman and I'd be fine with him as Supes. Only problem I have with him is...he seems to be one of the most controversial, following only Brandon Routh and Tom Welling. I'd rather have none of those 3 and just go with someone like Hamm. But if not Hamm then fine- Cavill OR Matt Bomer would be good choices.

I'd say, to keep this reboot the hell away from any controversies or inner-nerd-civil-wars, I'd say keep Routh and Welling OUT of the consideration. The reboot doesn't really need them...it can be a great success without them too.

Just because Sky Captain was a medicore film doesn't mean you can't have a GOOD Super Hero period film. Look at The Rocketeer for example. That being said I would perfer a modern Superman movie because thats an untapped idea and I want a JLA movie.
@LP4
Well yes that's a given but that doesn't mean we cant have a good trilogy.
