SMALLVILLE Star Tom Welling Confirms He Would Be Willing To Return As Superman For Movie Follow-Up

Smallville star Tom Welling has shared his thoughts on potentially returning as Clark Kent/Superman in a movie follow-up to the hit series, but admits the show's creatives have largely snubbed him since.

Smallville ran for a total of 10 seasons, and while the show was arguably at its best during the first 100 episodes or so, there were still a lot of great ideas even in later years.

A series that put a very different spin on the Superman mythos, it delighted fans just as much as it frustrated them (why couldn't he fly again?), but concluded way back in 2011. This world has since been revisited as a comic book, though, while stars Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum are still thought to be plotting out some sort of animated follow-up.

It's been a while since we've heard anything about that and we wouldn't be surprised if the project has fallen by the wayside. DC Studios has its own plans for the Man of Tomorrow with Superman: Legacy and only reluctantly allowed Superman & Lois to move forward with its fourth and final season to appease fans.

Welling recently caught up with Rosenbaum for the latter's 300th episode of his Inside of You podcast and brought up the prospect of a Smallville movie. To that, the actor said, "I mean, I'd be, 'Yes, let's hear it.' I don't know how it would happen."

He'd go on to confirm that no one involved with Smallville has ever reached out to him about that or any other new projects they've developed.

"I mean listen, I was thinking about this the other day right before we did our Talk Ville Podcast," Welling started. "We were on one of the most successful shows in the history of television, like Top 50. From that show, I've never gotten an incoming call from anyone involved in that show for further work."

"I'm not saying, like, I don't feel bad about that, I don't harp on anybody about that," he continued. "But you would think that when you're successful, [you'd continue to be successful] with successful people. But I think the time has changed."

Smallville still has a very devoted fanbase, but a movie follow-up is unlikely to be a box office hit. The Arrowverse's Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover meant we got to pick up with Clark Kent and Erica Durance's Lois Lane years after we last saw them; Rosenbaum declined to return as Lex Luthor after being offered what sounds like a dismal payday.

Throw in the fact that Welling was always unwilling to don Superman's classic costume in the series and we're not sure this follow-up would be what the majority of fans are hoping for.

Do you think Smallville should get a big screen sequel?
