Tom Welling as Superman: A Perfect Storm?

Tom Welling as Superman: A Perfect Storm?

This is more postulation than anything else, but there seems to be a number of elements at work that could conceivably be laying down the groundwork for Tom Welling to make the leap to the big screen as the Man of Steel -- and it's all based on supposition (just to be perfectly clear).

Although from the very beginning of his playing Clark Kent on Smallville Welling has made it pretty clear to everyone that he does not feel that he is actually playing Superman (which is why he supposedly refused to be interviewed for the Bryan Singer Superman documentary), there are some interesting developments. First off, this week it's been widely reported that the "S" will be heavily featured on Smallville, including on Clark's chest (though what that means exactly, no one can be sure). Then there's the fact that this is supposed to be the actor's final season of Smallville, aintitcool reported that unsubstantiated rumor of something called "Metropolis" and, most importantly, the courts have ruled that Warner Bros. needs to have a Superman film in production by 2011 or the studio opens itself up to a lawsuit by the Jerry Siegel estate.
So, Smallville with Welling ends in 2010 and Superman needs to be in production by 2011. Perfect storm or the desires of a fan boy with too much time on his hands?

Very very plausible!!! He'd of course have to actually WANT the role FIRST. Can't really see him be forced to play at gun point. Would defy the purpose and concept wouldn't it???

i always thought it he would be a good choice but would only really work once smallville finished,or he was replaced be weird if he played young and older superman.

And very very SHIT! The guy does not have the chops. Hes decent..at times in Smallville and more often than not hes as wooden as that barn he stares into the sky from like he just smelled a fart. People go on about how Routh played Supes as a pussy! All this guy does is cry and pine for Lana!

yeti588 - 7/10/2009, 8:12 AM
I liked Routh, alright as superman .And Welling can't help but read the script not all his fault.

TOM WELLING should stick to tv like ACKLES!

Before ROUTH maybe, but not after the last season of SMALLVILLE, no way! ; D

I think id rather WORTHINGTON well maybe not lol, heck NIC CAGE! heh heh.

IMO, Routh did better than Welling. Who's fault was it really??? Routh had Singer's shitty script to act out and Welling had Smallville's brain farts to do the same so... right now, i say Routh has the upper hand IF they re-sign him.
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 7/10/2009, 8:22 AM
An SHAMAN @ If WARNER BROS offered him the SUPERMAN role, he would dive in head first, WELLING soooo wants SUPERMAN!

Yep ROUTH has a much upperhand than TOM TOM!

Bamf7 @ I loved SMALLVILLE but after the weak last season an crappy DOOMSDAY (Which is meant for the Big screen) i cant see SMALLVILLE going anywhere, unless of course they do a DALLAS and all of season 8 was a dream! heh heh. That or get new writers!

He needs to put his super ego to the side and put on the suit. I thought Roth made a great superman it was more of a script problem than anything. Welling has the looks to play Sups, looks more like the comic or cartoon but he reminds me more of a soap opera actor than big screen lead.

Shaman - 7/10/2009, 8:42 AM
Routh, Welling, Cavill... all decent. None of them are PERFECT.

why not have worthington play every single super hero. cuz someone keeps casting him in every article (leee) lol j/K man. i thought returns was a good movie. routh played both clark kent and superman very well. i hope they bring him back.
superdog
superdog - 7/10/2009, 8:45 AM
droopy1317@ good point on worthington. metropolis though is almost guaranteed to be a t.v. movie to tie up the series. the show and the actors are not big enough to pull off a big screen movie.
superdog
superdog - 7/10/2009, 8:56 AM
lots of people say routh is perfect and no one knew who the hell he was when he was picked. i think the most he had done was a soap opera. truth be told i believe the next superman is out there and none of us have heard of him and he wont be anyone we could possibly think of today. that was true for both reeves and routh, and they are now the gold standard. so i say

unknown guy for supes

@ Lee - I loved Smallville too! And even though it's gone downhill, I still watch it. It showed signs of new life last season, I'm hoping they are able to salvage it this time. Problem is, it might not be worth it to TRY and salvage it since I don't think a lot of the original fans don't really watch anymore. Too bad.

teabag@ and that movie was derailed faster than my dog jumping on a supercat. and let me tell you that'ss fast. the cast for that movie were all to young. i think superman should be in his early thirties, like reeves. more established. they dont need to tell an origin story. i mean besides supermike, is there any other retarded ASSHOLE person out there who doesnt know supermans origin story? they can pick up in full fledged adulthood superman. so i think an older person then welling or even cavil should be picked.
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 7/10/2009, 9:19 AM
GUNSMITH @ After season 8 im shocked anyone would want WELLING for SUPERMAN???

Tea @ Oh, well i suppose you wanted the OC guy for THE FLASH too? Im glad they halted that an building up to the JLA movie! If they wasn't we'd probably not get the Green Lantern movie and some of the others an just have that crappy 90210 JUSTICE LEAGUE!

My take on Welling is that he looks like a kid who's supposed to be delivering my morning paper. Superman, not superboy, real simple. These damn Welling rumors along with Burton and Cage need to go away forever.

Teabag- In the 80's perfect world, Reeve was the perfect Superman. In our day and age's perfect world Reeve would never be Superman. We think he's perfect cause he was back then, he wouldn't be today. There is nothing about Reeve that matches the character we read about today. It's also why SR left a bad taste in most people's mouth. They copied the 80's Superman when we wanted the Superman of our generation. Routh could be able to play that but he'd be entirely different than in SR.

good point shaman

i also agree with superdog, make superman an older actor and stray away from origin. choose an unknown actor. routh was good but i want superman to be older, and maybe a little more cut than routh was.

YEAAAAAAAAAA!!!! HATERS BE DAMNED!!!! LOL!

@EDGROSS-

It may just be wishful thinking......but i'm right there with you!

@HATERS-

I get what your saying, "Routh's movie sucked because of Singers' crappy script." "Wellings' performance sucked because of Smallville crappy script". However, here is the difference as I see it:

Rouths' MOVIE was UNSUCCESSFUL......period
Wellings' TV SHOW is SUCCESSFUL.....period

Say what you want about Smallville's script, storylines, and plot; but there is one thing you can't say......you can't say the show wasn't successful!

Routh is already associated with the decline of the Superman movie franchise.....can't be helped. I'll agree he was in the wrong place at the wrong time, but hey, that's life.

I say, bring on Miller's Trilogy, throw Welling in the cape and lets start production on this bad boy!!!

Oh yea, SUPERMIKE'S an @SSHOLE!

Tom Welling doesn't have the spirit of Superman his Clark is to much of a drama queen and a jerk. Heck I would even prefer Dean Cain to reprise his role instead of Welling getting it. I'm still going to stay behind Routh and if you've seen my article "Why the World Needs Brandon Routh to be Superman" you know what my point of view is. Only the future will tell.

Sam Worthington for Captain America!

I don't care much for Smallville. It's like Saved By The Bell set in the Superman mythos. And as I understand it, all the times they have tried to use other charcters from the DC U where thought to be incredibly disappointing to many.

Tom Welling reminds me more of Superboy, really. I mean I am sure the guy is in his 20's at least but he still looks very boyish. There's nothing wrong with aging well. It's a blessing really. But in this case it may not exactly be what the doctor ordered.

As far as this being a perfect storm, yes it is. But only in the sense of being a perfect storm of overzealousness from fans of Smallville.
superdog
superdog - 7/10/2009, 9:40 AM
shaman@ i agree that they tried to copy it. but they also tried to modernize it, darker costume, darker undertones, emotionally vulnerable superman, leaving out the truth justice and american way (which is what the reeves version was all about). the problem is they had one foot in both time periods. they tried to blend the two and thats what the problem was. they should of picked one and gone full out.
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 7/10/2009, 9:47 AM
if they did use Welling they shouldnt make it a continuation of Smallville mainly because those idiot writers of the past few seasons have just screwed the character of Clark Kent up beyond recognition and because Smallville has become quite disliked by fans and critics this could also put people off. Welling though is a decent actor (when he's got a decent script) so i say...

TOM WELLING FOR SUPERMAN!!!
...oh and...
JENSEN ACKLES FOR CAPTAIN AMERICA!!!

JOSHW24-

Couldn't agree more, a continuation of SMALLVILLE would equal an EPIC FAIL. It's gotta have it's own story, that's why i'm diggin Miller's idea. I don't mind if they start it on Krypton, as long as they gloss over the "found in meteor storm, raised on a farm" part we all know.

I just can't wait for the end of that Trilogy.....EPIC.
