Tom Welling as Superman: A Perfect Storm?

Tom Welling as Superman: A Perfect Storm?

This is more postulation than anything else, but there seems to be a number of elements at work that could conceivably be laying down the groundwork for Tom Welling to make the leap to the big screen as the Man of Steel -- and it's all based on supposition (just to be perfectly clear).

Although from the very beginning of his playing Clark Kent on Smallville Welling has made it pretty clear to everyone that he does not feel that he is actually playing Superman (which is why he supposedly refused to be interviewed for the Bryan Singer Superman documentary), there are some interesting developments. First off, this week it's been widely reported that the "S" will be heavily featured on Smallville, including on Clark's chest (though what that means exactly, no one can be sure). Then there's the fact that this is supposed to be the actor's final season of Smallville, aintitcool reported that unsubstantiated rumor of something called "Metropolis" and, most importantly, the courts have ruled that Warner Bros. needs to have a Superman film in production by 2011 or the studio opens itself up to a lawsuit by the Jerry Siegel estate.
So, Smallville with Welling ends in 2010 and Superman needs to be in production by 2011. Perfect storm or the desires of a fan boy with too much time on his hands?
