Unreal Engine 5 promises to be a game-changer for future video games, with a demo released to tie into The Matrix Resurrections offering a glimpse into just how photorealistic they'll eventually look. Some gamers have used that to create their own versions of what the future could hold in store for us, with this effort focusing on DC Comics' Superman!
Comic book fans have spent years clamouring for a new Superman game, with rumours swirling that Arkham trilogy developers Rocksteady was developing one prior to Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League being announced. Sadly, that didn't pan out, though the hero will appear in the game revolving around Task Force X.
Making a video game revolving around the Man of Steel is no easy feat, but this demo shows the potential one could have if done well. It starts with Superman flying through Metropolis before heading high above the city and into space. From there, Kal-El lands on the moon in what looks like a true "open-world" adventure.
The challenge for any developer would be dialling the hero's powers back to a point where he's not some kind of unstoppable force. After all, a literal open-world game isn't close to becoming a reality at this stage, so how would Superman be confined to Metropolis...and not fly from one end of the city to the other in a matter of seconds?
Then, there's the issue with combat, as any opponent the Man of Tomorrow faces would need to be formidable enough to pose a challenge to the world's strongest superhero.
Only time will tell whether a game like this gets made, but there's currently no indication that DC Studios is plotting a title revolving around the character. That could change, of course, especially as James Gunn and Peter Safran are said to be plotting out a shared world of projects encompassing movies, TV shows, and new video games.
