As I sat watch the previews today during Public Enemies I saw a trailer of some note. No I'm not talking about Where the Wildthings Are (which looks amazing) but for a Bruce Willis sci-fi action movie called Surrogates. As I watched the trailer in stunned amazement I gradually came to remember a graphic novel I picked up at Borders a few years back.
The Surrogates, a book written by Robert Venditti, is a scifi/Film noir story set in the year 2054. The story revolves around a future where human beings live in relative isolation from one another; interacting with each other only through idealized robotic proxies of themselves. Through these robots they go about their day to day business, living their lives with out ever really living them. All is peaceful in this world with out fear or pain, until a radical group of humanists tries to violently return the world back to nature.
The movie staring Bruce Willis looks like the son of Bladerunner. And while the preview lacked the stylistic imagery of the book it still looks like the premise remains intact.
If any of this sounds interesting check it out, it comes out on September 25th, or just read the comic by Robert Venditti.
