THE CROW Reboot Producer Says It's An "Anti-Marvel Film" That Will "Blow People Away"

The Crow producer Sam Pressman has hyped up the upcoming remake starring Bill Skarsgård and explains why this movie is "kind of an anti-Marvel film." Find out what else he had to say after the jump...

Attempts to get remakes of The Crow off the ground have been made for longer than we can remember, with most ultimately shelved. Even Aquaman star Jason Momoa came close to playing Eric Draven once upon a time!

Now, though, Ghost in the Shell director Rupert Sanders has been tapped to helm a reboot which will see Bill Skarsgård take on the title role. Danny Huston and FKA Twigs are thought to also be part of the project which was recently acquired by Lionsgate in an eight-figure deal.

Talking to Deadline, Pressman Film CEO and The Crow producer Sam Pressman shared his excitement for the world to see what they have planned for the property.

"The Crow has been a very central and integral part of our company and I’m really proud of the progress and the work that has been done," he tells the trade. "I think the movie is just going to blow people away."

"Our partners want to approach it in a very 360 way, whether it be video games, an animated series or a universe, but it’s got this cosmic legacy that can expand beyond a singular story."

"We’re finally at a point where we can really explore those other avenues because it’s such a unique property in that it is not a studio film, it’s not a Marvel film - it’s kind of an anti-Marvel film," Pressman continues. "I have the highest hopes for that and I really love what Molly Hassell has done in pushing it up the hill and Rupert Sanders is such a visionary."

Whether it's in a positive or negative light, it's rarely a good idea to compare a movie like this to Marvel. Despite not being said with malice, words like these often come back to haunt those who made them. Suicide Squad director David Ayer, for example, has never quite managed to shake off his "F*ck Marvel!" declaration at the movie's premiere.

The Crow franchise kicked off with the 1994 release of the movie starring Brandon Lee who, tragically, was killed in an accidental on-set shooting. Three sequels followed, though none of them were very good and they've mostly been forgotten in the years since.

This remake is based on the 1989 limited comic book series of the same name by James O'Barr. It revolves around Eric Draven, a musician who is resurrected from the dead to seek vengeance against the gang that murdered him and his fiancée, all the while being pursued by a sympathetic police officer.

Marvel does a lot of anti-Marvel movies lately.

@TheyDont - I mean, depends on your definition of a marvel movie.

If you mean good, then yeah no one's more anti marvel than marvel.

If you mean adhering to the marvel formula, then they're the most marvel company ever.

If you mean going against marvel, then yeah. They're pretty anti marvel. Only explanation why they'd double and triple down on sh!t like she hulk and secret invasion.

Remaking the original is going to be an uphill struggle.

Rupert Sanders is a little style over substance. His live action remake of Ghost in the Shell is visually gorgeous and I love the homages to the original movies, but they really missed the point in terms of the meaning of the film. The story and character arcs in the remake were pedestrian.

@ObserverIO - just curious, what do you mean by the meaning of the film?
ObserverIO

@Origame - Well the original film was about ontology. It had a deeply philosophical and meditative approach. The remake was merely the tired old search for identity trope.

When Major discovers her real identity, the film is over. It's like the difference between teaching somebody how to count to ten and teaching quantum theory.

Strangely enough, they did the same thing with the RoboCop remake. The identity crisis thing was there in Verhoeven's original, but it also had a hardcore satirical edge. The remake was merely the Weapon X/Frankenstein thing without any of the intelligence, self-awareness or observational comedy.

Shitting on a successful franchise in order to promote your movie rarely goes well.

@Urubrodi - would this article have been written if he didn’t? Now I know they’re making a new movie. Looks like a smart and free way to get the buzz out to the nerd community.

@CAPTAINPINKEYE - Oh, it will definitely generate some buzz, but for the nerds out there that enjoy Marvel movies (which are still a lot) and listen to this, they will probably see it as a reason to not go see it. I'm one of them and it has made me question if I'd be interested in this. That whole "any publicity is good publicity stuff" is BS.

How stupid does one need to be to crap on another successful franchise to promote their movie? Do they not realize that when they do that they are instantly going to piss of fans of that other franchise and lose ticket sales?

How many ticket sales they lose doesn't really matter. They will lose some number of sales. Whethwe its a big or small number. Fans are very tribal with this stuff. Especially when the franchise you're trashing happens to be the biggest and most successful film franchise of all time.

They should be promoting their new movie to make as many people go see it as possible. They should NOT be causing division in their potential viewers before the movie even has a trailer released lol.

CAPTAINPINKEYE - 9/12/2023, 11:08 AM
@CorndogBurglar - so you’re saying because of this comment you’ve already decided that you’re not going to pay to see this movie. Or that there people that have also made their same decision? Like even before seeing a trailer?
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 9/12/2023, 12:17 PM
@CAPTAINPINKEYE - I didn't say anything about myself. I'm saying that there are 100% people that will get mad about something like this and not go see the movie.

We see this all the time. If you are selling a product, the last thing you want to do is divide your potential customer base. Because while you are taking sides, people that don't agree that side will tend to not buy your product anymore. Just ask Bud Light, Target, and Starbucks how well taking sides in their advertising worked out for them.

Now, in this case, it's not as bad as taking a side in a controversial culture war debate. But there are a lot of MCU fans out there and telling them your product is anti-Marvel will 100% drive aways some of the hard-core Marvel fans. Just like when Ayer said "[frick] Marvel" before his Suicide Squad movie came out.

This kind of thing can rub fans the wrong way. You're taking a risk with your ticket sales when you do this, because there will 100% be MCU fans that claim he is attacking the MCU and will decide not to support his movie out of spite.

Why would you want that as a director? Or anyone that is selling any product? Why limit your potential customers base?

I'll give it a fair chance just like I do any comic book movie. But everyone is different.

@bobevanz - There's a difference between criticism and outright putting something down to boost your own thing up. That isn't criticism.

The original comic doesn't revolve around an Eric Draven. Gotta stop adding that when it's not the case.

There is no negative connotation to what they said, it just means that it's the exact opposite of what Marvel is trying to accomplish. Stop being so [frick]ing scandalous.
