Story first reported by NyMag.com.

NYMAG.com recently caught up with director Patty Jenkins at the premiere of Five in the Soho district of New York. Here's what they reported about their discussion with Jenkins:

So when we ran into Jenkins at the premiere of Five at Skylight Soho on Monday, we asked her if Thor 2 was really next on her slate. “I can’t say, but yes,” she laughed. “I can’t say anything definitive, but it’s exciting to be in talks with them about it.” Jenkins understands she’s an unusual choice for the project — she hasn’t worked with big special effects before. “I think Marvel is really ballsy to think outside the box,” she said. “And I think everyone they’ve talked to and hired has been interesting.” While the deal is still being sorted out, she's prepping for the gig, surreptitiously. When asked what she was reading, comics- and graphic-novel-wise, she said, “Right now, I’m reading all of … I can’t say.”

Without question, this is indeed an intriguing choice by Marvel. However, Jenkins has shown that she can definitely handle a drama with Monster. While nearly everyone has stated they enjoyed Kenneth Branagh's Thor, quite a few people felt the movie was missing something that they couldn't quite identify. Will be interesting to see how this all shakes out. Stay tuned to CBM as we'll report the news, the second the ink dries on the contract.

Patty Jenkins, born Patricia Lea Jenkins, July 24, 1971, is an American film director and writer. She grew up in Lawrence, Kansas and attended the AFI Conservatory. She graduated from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in 1993. The most famous film she has directed to date is Monster, a docudrama about Aileen Wuornos. On July 14, 2011, she received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for the pilot of The Killing.

Thor is a 2011 American superhero film based on the comic book character of the same name published by Marvel Comics. It is the fourth film released as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film was directed by Kenneth Branagh, written by Ashley Edward Miller, Zack Stentz and Don Payne, and stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins and Stellan Skarsgård. The film tells the story of Thor, a god who is exiled from his homeland of Asgard to Earth. While there, he builds a relationship with scientist Jane Foster. However, Thor must stop his brother Loki, who intends to become the new king of Asgard.

@ Intruder I would say confirmed but the article goes on to say that the deal is still being worked out. That's exactly where things were at with Brian Kirk and we all know what happened there.

What???? I am NOT happy with this. A scene involving Thor, Loki, and a baseball bat and then we will think that life on the Isle of Silence was such a bad rap after all. COOL.

Occurred to me that lots of female viewers liked the first movie because of Thor's looks. I heard more than once that this would be a reason they would watch it again.

I hope they're not hiring her just to satisfy the female audiences. Monster was a badass movie anyway, so I trust her.

Great move by Marvel to bring in such a talented director. Her work on Monster got an Academy Award for Theron. Open minded people see this as a great op. for their character.

@HelaGood

Kenneth Branagh was not a big blockbuster director and he never done a heavy special effects movie.

@Kinski

what a stupid comment cause shes a woman she cant director Thor GTFO.

@Intruder

Kinski dont know what is a woman

Bottom line: Marvel's cheap. They are constantly cutting corners to save money. Next they'll shortchange RDJ and off he'll go. I don't know much about this director, and I hope she does great. I just think her selection, the same as the guy direction Iron Man 3, is a function of economics and not talent.

@Intruder I wasn't even referencing Terrence Howard. I was concluding that Jon Favreau's departure was about money. Edward Norton was about money. Kenneth Branagh was about money. I have now way of knowing this, but I have a sneaky suspicion that I'm correct. They will cite 'creative differences' blah, blah, blah. But Marvel doesn't want to pay!

i'll give it a try,marvel studio's hasn't cast a bad director yet.

Disaster!!!! bringing a woman on such a big movie!??!?
this is going to be a love movie more then action or anything else(and i'm not a feminist)

It just i can't imagine thor smeshing monsters heads with her!

I haven't seen Monster but Marvel have a history of choosing left field choices and 9 out of ten times it works. The problem is that if you pump in the sort of budget, like Batman, there is no guarantee of success - it could be 200 million down the toilet, sort of like Green Lantern. I think Thor 2 will be in safe hands - Chris Hemsworth is a great leading man and Tom Hiddleston as Loki is my favourite Marvel villain so far.

@richal13

Kenneth Branagh was not about money plus he is still involved about the sequel. Jon Favreau is still working with Marvel Studio.

@ckal

Kenneth Branagh dont know nothing about CGI also. Thor is his first real special effect driven movie most of his movies is practical

@ckal

Branagh action scenes in Thor was not great it was alright but not great. remember Jon Favreau was not know for making action but he did alright so u cant say Patty cant do a massive action in Thor 2.
jazzman
jazzman - 9/27/2011, 12:51 PM
@Intruder

i agree with u on that. they would be the most typical director to do a sci-fi film. i give Marvel Studio balls to hire directors who are not known to do a big blockbuster movie a chance.

look what happen with Green Lantern. WB/DC hired a director Martin Campbell who is known to reboot Bond twice and he is known for action. but yet Green Lantern flopped.

Bar20 - 9/27/2011, 12:54 PM
@jazzman

I'm just saying that in general you don't give a woman direct such an action movie...

For exemple,can anyone imagine how would "Transformers" would have look like if there was a female director insted of michael bay or "300" without zack snyder?

A male director with a good vision should take on those kind of films and not female i'm sorry..
Bar20
Bar20 - 9/27/2011, 1:03 PM
All HAIL MICHAEL BAY!

Kayo
Kayo - 9/27/2011, 1:04 PM
wonder why they hired Snyder to helm MOS when his previous film was a less successful e.g. Watchmen, Sucker Punch.
