THOR: RAGNAROK Director Explains Why Hela Destroying Mjolnir Was Moved From An Alleyway To A Field

Some observant fans noticed that the latest trailer for Thor: Ragnarok moved Hela's destruction of Mjolnir from a New York alleyway to a field. Here, director Taika Waititi explains why exactly that is.

In early trailers for Thor: Ragnarok, Hela could be seen destroying Mjolnir in a New York City alleyway. That's not a particularly glamorous location for such an iconic moment to take place but no one really complained at the time. Despite that, a newer trailer for the Marvel Studios threequel revealed that the shocking destruction of the God of Thunder's magic hammer was moved to an open field instead.

During an interview with Digital Spy, Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi shed some light on what he changed the scene (presumably during reshoots) and his decision to include Odin and Loki in it.

"Here’s the thing, mate. Here’s the thing: Alleyways aren’t cool, and fields are cool, all right? Ask anyone. We originally shot some of that stuff in a setting that was set for New York, and what we wanted to do was to have them go down to Earth and they see Doctor Strange, but it felt too convenient that he was suddenly just down the road, in an alley, and also everything up until then had been so fast-paced and all over the place, we wanted to go somewhere peaceful and actually chill out with the characters, and be with Odin and pass this wisdom and stuff, and not have to hear stupid yellow cabs honking out the back.

"It just felt like a terrible environment to have a scene which could be very emotional for what happens with Odin and the boys, and the first time we’ve ever seen the three guys all together, and him telling them he loves them, and acknowledging Loki as his son. It was just very important for us to be in a kind of beautiful, peaceful environment."

Does this mean hobo Odin has been cut from the movie and that Thor will find his father in Norway instead? It certainly sounds that way but such is the nature of reshoots so we probably shouldn't be shocked. Adding more emotion to a big scene like this is no bad thing, though, and it will be interesting seeing how this plays out in Thor: Ragnarok now! What do you guys think of this change to the film?

I don't get it. Are Strange and Odin still in this movie?

@MalseMarcel - they probably still are, but maybe Thor goes from NY to Norway (?) after talking to Strange, instead of everything happening in NY

@MalseMarcel - Yeah but he has a point. It's kinda silly convenient if Thor goes to Earth to find his father, asks Steven Strange, and we find out, his father is like 2 avenues over

@Spidey91 - That makes sense

@Deonox - Well NY is a big place... One of the most recognizable cities in the world... and a great place for a hobo to go unchecked. It makes more sense then we're letting it I think.

@Kman - Lol Ny isn't actually that big, it's just dense. It's just very convenient in the sense that they're on a cosmic road trip, and they need a sorcerer, and the person they're looking for is down the block

@Deonox - NY is listed as the largest city on the planet based on land area... so it is actually pretty big

@Kman - Lol don't mind me being technical snob here but we lost that title a few years back. We're now #9. Lost to several cities in China & Japan. And the island of manhattan(where most suff happens) only makes up 1/6 on NYC. Okay i'm done being a prick.

It just felt really small on a cosmic scale. Like going from planet to planet to different realm, and then having to go a few blocks over. It'd be like looking for Luke and then finding out he's a 2 mile hike outside of Maz's Cantina

@Deonox - I dunno man... Im looking at data from 2017 still showing NYC (in it's entirety) as the largest city in land area per square mile and km's. Not including population, which I think either China or Japan can top.

And I think the other boroughs are relevant too though, with Cap being from Brooklyn and Spidey being from Queens, etc.

@Kman - Lol it's funny, it wasn't until that movie that i learned Cap was from Brooklyn

@Deonox - they actually put a Captain America Statue up in Brooklyn last year I think... kinda silly, IMO. But then again there is a famous Rocky Statue in Philly that everybody loves.
