Twitter Buzz returns to assess the wide-ranging response to the news that Patty Jenkins will not be directing Thor 2. Did Marvel dodge a bullet or is this project in trouble?

I think it's safe to say that no one really saw this coming. Just recently, I interviewed actor Clark Gregg (Agent Coulson) and he stated he was looking forward to meeting with Patty Jenkins to "presumably" begin discussing his role in Thor 2. I imagine he and a lot of the other cast members were caught off guard as were many of the fans. There's no quicker place to get the latest news and headlines than Twitter and within moments of the announcement from Deadline thoughts were flying fast and furiously about whether Marvel has dodged a bullet or made a huge mistake. Also, a lot of thoughts were put out there about who Marvel should turn to now following Jenkins departure. With those outside of the fan community sounding off on the news and who they'd like to see take up directorial responsibilities on Thor 2, I thought I'd put the question to you guys, the experts.

Thor is a 2011 American superhero film based on the comic book character of the same name published by Marvel Comics. It is the fourth film released as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film was directed by Kenneth Branagh, written by Ashley Edward Miller, Zack Stentz and Don Payne, and stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins and Stellan Skarsgård. The film tells the story of Thor, a god who is exiled from his homeland of Asgard to Earth. While there, he builds a relationship with scientist Jane Foster. However, Thor must stop his brother Loki, who intends to become the new king of Asgard.

Director Sam Raimi first developed the concept of a film adaptation of Thor in 2001, but soon abandoned the project, leaving it in "development hell" for several years. During this time, the rights were picked up by various film studios until Marvel Studios signed Mark Protosevich to develop the project in 2006, and the rights were picked up by Paramount Pictures. Matthew Vaughn was originally assigned to direct the film for a tentative 2010 release. However, after Vaughn was released from his holding deal in 2008, Branagh was approached and the film's release was rescheduled into 2011. The main characters were cast in 2009, and principal photography took place in California and New Mexico from January to May 2010. The film was converted to 3D in post-production.

Here's my list for who should direct:
Joss Whedon
David Yates
Dugan Jones
Rupert Sanders
Neil Marshall
Darren Aronofsky

Or maybe Branagh can change his mind and come back.

Marvel keeps getting alot of flack for being heavy handed with its talent but I'd put more blame on Disney dictating to them.Let Marvel have a true free rein and I'm pretty certain the politics will calm down. The Nazi House of the Mouse needs to back off.

Why is everyone so sure that darren aronofsky is destined to make the best CBM ever?

This is a business. To insure the best product, whatever personal dickery going on at MARVEL needs to stop. Approach kenneth branagh like grown men, Kevin, and seal the best and most obvious deal.

I adore Aronofsky's work, but I don't think THOR 2 is a proper fit. I would love to see Whedon swoop in and get things back on track. The man knows the characters, knows the actors and knows the universe. It would be perfect. The only problem I see is burnout on behalf of Whedon who will have just finished post on AVENGERS if he was to hop onto this. Favreau had a short turnaround for IM2, but I don;t believe it was fatigue that made that movie less than it could have been. Whedon is going to knock our hair back with AVENGERS, let him continue the trend with THOR 2. We don't need high-art when it comes to a dude with a hammer; just great storytelling, great performances and great action. Joss Whedon can provide this. You all know it. (I also think David Yates would be great but at this point Marvel won't pay him what he's worth).

Man I sincerely have no idea about who should direct Thor II. Patty Jenkins was an interesting choice but Im not really worried that she got cut. I wasn't really on board for her anyway.

Since Source Code is one of the best movies in 2011, I'd say Duncan Jones! But who knows... Marvel knows what they're doing right?

Two sides to every story. As much as I like Patty, if her vision of Thor 2 didn't match what Marvel/Disney was looking for perhaps thats not a bad thing. Waiting to hear more.

You know who could probably direct a completely fantastic Thor movie that they will never ever not in a million years ever get?

Mel Gibson.

Think about it. Braveheart, Apocalypto, The Passion of the Christ. I think he could do it. Somewhere there is an alternate universe with that movie, and its great. That universe probably also involves less DWI's and weird rants.

V for Vendetta is one of the best CBMs ever made, regardless how far or close it stayed to the source. The film in itself should be a blueprint for any CBM. And Ninja Assassin was at the very least decent. McTeigue will always be my top pic to pick up where Nolan leaves Batman off. But he'd totally rock Thor! McTeigue and Snyder are perfect for CBMs.

On the subject of directors, wouldn't you want to see an Iron Fist movie directed by John Woo? Yep,me too. Now on to the matter at hand: McTeigue would be a great hire. Just keep Marcus Nispel at least a hundred miles from this, and I'm fine.lol

Im not sure MCTEIGUE is the right choice for this project either...neither is ARNOFSKY. I'd be much happier id they went with NEIL MARSHALL. He's got the whole SWORDS & SORCERY thing down packed now, but i feel like they are just gonna go after a big name now to try and put a stop to all the negative buzz...

I’m not convinced that Marvel Studios are big bullies just yet. I’ll agree that the Edward Norton and Louis Leterrier thing was B.S., and also that the Terrence Howard thing was crap. However, as far as Favreau goes, where is everyone getting that Marvel pinched him out?

As soon as Favreau left Iron Man 3 people assumed it was due to bad PR between him and Marvel Studios. There was nothing conclusive on that though. Mickey Rourke has recently made some comments that support that theory, but Rourke pops off so often that it’s hard to take his account seriously. I’ll accept that Rourke left due to creative differences, that’s as clear as can be. Beyond that, I think comes down to either the assumption that

A) Marvel Studios hurt the quality of Favreau and Downey’s vision, or B) Favreau didn’t have what it took to take Iron Man to the next level , so he bowed out to make room for another person to energize the franchise. Iron Man 2 didn’t live up to expectations. I enjoyed it, but it is what it is. Look at Cowboys and Aliens. I still need to see the movie, but a lot of people on these comment spaces and in other forums have written of their disappointment. I’m not even going into the critic statistics here. So right there you have 2 of Favreau’s latest movies not living up to the expectations.

Onto Kenneth Brannagh. Many (not everybody) are assuming that Brannagh left due to creative differences as well. However, Kenneth has come out and said that his reason for leaving was strictly due to scheduling issues. There’s this idea that he’s just playing nice, but again, at this point it’s nothing more than an assumption. With Patty Jenkins, it just happened and immediately people assume that Marvel bullied her out. Perhaps they did, but we don’t even know what she was bringing to the table. Maybe it was a good thing. I was excited at the prospect of her directing, but until she comes out and says something more than what she has said, it’s hard to conclude anything.

Joe Johnston and Joss Whedon seem to have had the best working relationship with Marvel Studios, besides Favreau. Whedon threw out Zack Penn’s script and wrote his own! How’s that for creative freedom? I still have faith in Favreau, he’s ambitious and he has talent. When you take big gambles, you’re bound to run into a misstep sometime. I’d be surprised if he didn’t work for Marvel Studios again in some shape or form. He’s executive producer on the Avengers.

Well, McTeigue could rock Thor but i don't think he's the "perfect choice". I'm just in high support of his because he was mentionned as being part of the list. After having three directors drop out of Thor 2, i don't think we should spit on the idea of having V for Vendetta's director take the reins.

Jack Bender could be a low budget solution. He has great ties with Disney working as a key director for many of the best episodes of LOST.

for a second movie, i'm leaning more towards Branagh. but, if he's DEFINITELY out fo sho...yeah, Neil Marshall sounds like someone who's meant to do a Thor movie.

if not...how about Tarsem Singh...? but, of course, he's just gonna do whatever the hack he wants to do with the whole Thor universe.
