Will Thor Be The God of Thunder?

Will Thor Be The God of Thunder?

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige adds some interesting insight as to how we will experience Asgard...

In a recent article by scoop master Garth Franklin at Dark Horizons, WHICH WAS ALREADY COVERED THOROUGHLY BY EDITOR MARK CASSIDY HERE ON THIS SITE, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige told SFX Magazine the following about the probable take on THOR. Here's the quote:

"we're doing the Jack Kirby/Stan Lee/Walt Simonson/J. Michael Straczynski 'Thor.' We're not doing the blow-the-dust-off-of-the-old-Norse-book-in-your-library 'Thor.' In the 'Thor' of the Marvel Universe, there's a race called the Asgardians and we're linked through this Tree of Life that we're unaware of. It's real science, but we don't know about it yet. The 'Thor' movie is about teaching people that."

So it's... Science? Is Thor a God? Or an Alien? Curiouser and curiouser. Time will tell how this truly plays out. There was a lot more Feige had to say, and RorMachine did a great job of covering it in his article. I was mainly interested in the Thor angle due to what I believed was an interesting wrinkle. Anyway, let the Science vs. Mythology debate begin!

Didn't know this was common knowledge. I was actually still under the impression that they would go the mythology route, so it was a bit of a surprise to me. Apologies if this is just a rehashing of old news, I found it relevant.

Also, I may have accidentally implied that the HULK will factor into the Thor movie. This is not the case. Feige was actually speaking of The Avengers when discussing HULK. Sorry folks, it's still early for me.

Not sure if I like the idea of it or not, though admitedly I was worried about how they would mix the highly science aspect with the high magic aspect of Thor. If they did it wrong it could end up being really cheesey.

maybe its a mixture of both. i dont think its ever said offically that they are the real norse gods...maybe they are like the new gods. godlike humans with supernatural powers

SORRY ROR-MACHINE!!

I missed your article, which is certainly the better and more detailed piece. That's what I get for trying to contribute without reading all the articles first. I edited the content of my article to hopefully get some of the egg off my face.

Very very interesting. I'll tell you what is meant by science in this concept, and it's actually pretty cool...

They are saying let's take the meaning of this word "god" out into the mud and play a bit of rugby with it which is EXACTLY what marvel has done all these years.

Different people mean different things when they use the term "god". The Norse concept of a god is a little closer to nature worship and classic paganism than the Judeo Christian concept of it. And the Marvel concept is like a sci fi variation on that.
So essentially looking at the use of the word and what is meant by it within the context of Marvel comics and not the stilted normative way we are accustomed is where they are getting their movie conept from.

So from the Marvel view the Asgardian gods are a race of extra dimensional dwelling, magical, super human beings who can trace their origins through Odin's bloodline back to some of the the earliest organic sentient creatures in the universe. The ancient Norsemen worshiped them as gods because their Shamans learned of their existence through astral travel to other dimensional places such as Asgard, and in their primitive way came to regard them as the origins of natural pheonomena on Earth.
For an Asgardian, gaining a special title such as "God of Thunder","All Father" or "God of Mischief" are bestowed as honors, accolades, special magickal powers or , as in the case of Loki, social stigmas.

So when your talking about Marvel "gods" you might mean "A mystical being that is more powerful than ourselves, as in the Norse or Olympian gods. Or you might mean that they are highly unique, vastly powerful beings who perform some kind of important function in the universe like Galactus and The Celestials. Then there are beings that are fundamntal to the nature of the universe itself as in Eternity, The Phoenix Force or the Living Tribunal. Those could certianly be called gods as well. And then there are a few that are even more powerful than that such as the never seen One Above All and the Beyonder. They are definitely Gods too.

That's cool. I kind of figured they would go the Earth-X route with Thor/Asgardians' origin. It will make it easier to explain Thor's "magical powers" which really aren't magical at all. The Earth-X Asgardians were the pinacle of Celestial experimentations; they are the celestials' ultimate creations.
