Thundercats Movie Still in the Works?

Thundercats Movie Still in the Works?

A source close to the project contradicts previous reports that the film was dropped by Warner Brothers.

ScreenRant has apparently spoken to a source that revealed a Thundercats movie is still on the horizon for Warner Brothers. Paul Sopocy (It’s Alive) has allegedly not only finished a first draft screenplay for the film, but has been hired by Warner Brothers to do a rewrite. That rewrite has already been turned in to the studio. The source went on to say that while Warner Brothers will handle distribution, Chase Me Productions will act as the producing studio on the film.

That's not all, ScreenRant has also posted highlights of what could possibly be Sopocy's script:

"- All of your favorite characters are in the film, along with a few new additional ones: Lion-O, Cheetara, Tygra, Panthro, Wiley Kit, Wiley Kat, Jaga, Mumm-Ra, Slithe, Monkian, Jackal Man, and even Lion-O’s father, Claudus.

- There is no mention of Snarf at all.

- Panthro has purple skin – there was some concern of stereotyping him in the 80s as being big, bald and black.

- Claudus and Grune both appear in the movie.

- The Berbils robot bears are referenced but not featured.

- Monkian and Cheetara have one the funniest interactions in the film.

- Lion-O is given a [new] love interest, Kaeli.

- The film appears to be a hard PG-13 and is left open for a sequel."

Until this information is either confirmed or debunked, we should treat it like most Hollywood scoops; with a grain of salt. What do you Thundercats fans think? Would these plot points fit a proper film adaptation?

Nice! I hope this happens, Mum-ra stays badass, and Lion-O isn;t half the fruitloop he was in the cartoon.

What about a Silver Hawks Movie? I think that would be just as diffcult as the Thundercats!

I'd LOVE a Thundercats movie that has matured along with its original fans. I'm not sure I understand why Panthro is purple as opposed to blue, and what that has anything to do with similarities to people of African decent.

I hope Kaeli is not only Thunderian, I hope she is an equal to Lion-o, and not some commoner. I'm kinda sick of Cinderella stories.

I hope the tribal and clan dynamics is given further explanaition than the cartoon. Or in the very least more exposure and how that paradigm worked on Thundera.

Overall, very stoked upon the reveal of this news. Thanks alot Poni for keeping your ear to the ground!

Though I watched that show both in my youth and recently, it has so many troubles to hammer out I don't think it'd be worth it. Not only that, I don't think it was as well developed as TCats, nor had the same size following.

Seeing a Thundercats movie would make me giggle like a little girl in happiness.

Phineas - I think Panthro was gray, not blue. Probably a dark gray that some people would think is similar to black which would denote a racial aspect of black.... because sadly some people find racism in things they don't need to. When I was a kid I always thought his skin tone had to do with the cat he was named after... panthers have black fur.

My favorite cartoon of all time, I wanted to BE Lion-O as a kid. I can't really see it working in live action though (without an avatar-like budget) but its going to be fun reading the fan casting.

I have the same question as Dmon (it was a question right?). Would this be live action or CGI? I kind of hope it is CGI (like TMNT was only better), for I fear that a bunch of actors looking similar to those douche bags in the Broadway show, would make it difficult to take seriously. I wouldn't even care if it was straight to DVD, as long as they kept the hard PG-13 rating and it had a really solid story, leaving it opened to a sequel (as suggested).

You don't have to apologize to me for being in a minority. Stay strong to your convictions. But I never hear of a call for Silver Hawks. I DO, however, hear an overwhelming clarion call for TCats.

Yes, but if you look at the cast of characters, they all seem to fall into a spectrum of primary colors. So, I suppose what I am getting at is, though he came off looking grey mostly, he may, from an artistic point of view, be the "blue one".
JerusalemJr
JerusalemJr - 2/18/2010, 2:54 PM
Phineas - I suppose that could make sense, I always saw their colors as those of predatory cats, which made blue not an option.

True. But there are no greay Panthers either. I think thats what the show creator was going for, diverse-city. A couple of tweaks here and there, and you got what we have now.

This is great news, good find CBM! I'd heard some time ago that this project got the axe, and was do-massive-amounts-of-drugs depressed about it...

...now, I'm do-massive-amounts-of-drugs happy...woooooohooooo!!!

On a serious note, **JerusalemJr**, where did you come across that CGI Lion-O? He looks diesel, man.

Love Thundercats! Watched it all the time when I was kid. Hell, even my older brother watched it. This movie could be really cool if it is done right and not raped by CGI. Mumm-Ra is awesome! Bill Nighy would make a great Mumm-Ra.

Thunder cats! Silver hawks! and Tiger Sharks lol these were all awsome as a kid =D it would be tuff to pull off Silver hawks, probably harder then thunder cats.

On another note: Panthro was most likly gray so that the details of the character would show up. Plus he is a hero and if he would have been made black, it probably would have made him more evil looking.I think a dark gray would be fine, bright enough to see details and dark enough for accuracy.

@poni that fan made trailer was pretty good. Who ever did that was pretty talented. Pitt looked pretty good a Lion-o even though I would want someone younger. I wish Pitt would do another movie like Troy.
