RICK AND MORTY: Dan Harmon Says "Contract Negotiations" Are The Reason For Season 4 Delay

Fans panicked when they learned that season 4 of Adult Swim's hit animated series Rick and Morty hadn't yet been ordered by the network, but they might be a bit relieved by Dan Harmon's recent comments...

There's been a lot of confusion online since Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon said season 4 has not yet been ordered by Adult Swim, but his latest comments on the matter provide a little bit of clarification.

While appearing on SModcast with Kevin Smith, the pair got into a discussion about how a creator can do things on their own schedule once they reach a certain point of popularity. Harmon said:

"Here comes the paranoid anxiety of like, I don't want any Rick and Morty fan hearing that and going like: 'Harmon's on Smith's podcast and he's talking about how it's great how he can take as much time as he wants.' The reason why we're not working on Rick and Morty right now ain’t because I figured out that I don’t need to impress you, it’s because of a little something called contract negotiations and it’s gotten complicated this time around.”

While this doesn't give us any indication of when we can expect season 4, it should calm down fans who think Rick and Morty is doomed. Based on how the show has become a cultural touchstone in recent years, and how Harmon had nothing but good things to say about Adult Swim in his interview with Smith, it seems to be only a matter of time before the two parties sort things out.

The show has gone through its fair share of drama since season 3 concluded last fall. In January, one of the writers on the show, Ryan Ridley said that he didn't expect the show to return until late 2019, and last week's news about the future of the show being in jeopardy only added fuel to the fire.

However, the Run the Jewels music video featuring Rick and Morty that arrived last week will help tide fans over during the long wait.

@TheRealTomServo - what this?

@TheRealTomServo - You are doing God’s work. Xavier surpasses what Rick and Morty gently tries to do in every way. Way stranger, more crude, disturbing, dark, interesting and way more unique animation. Spread the Xavier awareness.

This show is way too popular and makes way too much money to not come back. I’m not worried in the slightest.

Still not a satisfactory ending for samurai jack. Oh well.

Not worried its not coming back. But I’m hesitant to even say ‘Yeah, take your time as long as its good’ too this time. Season 3 took 2 years to come out and it really didn’t live up to the other 2 in ny opinion, except for the premiere and like a couple other episodes. Idk what happened, but I hope they get it together for Season 4.

@SpideyPuffsMJ - The ricklantis mixup is one of the greatest episodes on television, just my opinion.

Everything else was either good or pretty Eh, to be honest.

@ImmortalCipher - Agreed which is why it kinda pissed me off that the finale was mostly a one-off random episode about Rick fighting the President. Season 3 has some great moments and dropped some good crumbs that they just never followed through on.

@SpideyPuffsMJ - I think the final episode was supposed to be longer. But it got delayed.

With the level of popularity this show has it'll be back. Hopefully the quality goes up a bit because season 3 was mostly eeehhh at times

I hope the new series relies more on the over-arcing story with Evil Morty and the Galactic Federation (Led by Tammy and Phoenix Person) - i feel episodes revolving around these aspects to be the most engaging. The Ricklantis Mixup for example is probably my favorite episode given the dark humor, commentary on real life and subversion of some tropes while playing to others in interesting ways.

Most the separate stories have been sort of underwhelming and season 3 kind of pressed the reset button in regards to a lot of the characters - it does not feel like they have really progressed at all beyond potentially the divide between Rick and Morty. If Season 3 did not have the Ricklantis Mixup i probably wouldn't be interested in a Season 4 honestly - nothing else really felt like it mattered or advanced the over-arcing story.

@Scarilian - My favorite episodes are the really absurd ones, like Rixty Minutes and Total Rickall. I felt like season three became more of a generic sci fi with some swearing and gore.

@JamesPunn -
I only really referred to season 3 in my prior comment, the earlier seasons have some good episodes when they start to take them seriously.

'look you guys are getting excited about the wrong aspect of this device' Rixty Minutes is pretty much summed up in this line, the side-plot to me is more interesting than the main plot-line and the jokes/gags feel like padding. Jerry and Beth have a strong romantic storyline, Summer and Morty have an interesting dynamic as the two realize that the parents are going through a rough time. I really enjoyed that episode, but for the side-plots and i'm not sure most other fans feel the same.
