The first episode of The Boys season 5 ended with the demise of A-Train, who went out like a boss after laughing in Homelander's face. Though Reginald Franklin's exit seemed somewhat inevitable as soon as he made an enemy of Homelander, fans weren't expecting to see him go so early in the season.

The speedster's redemption arc came full circle when he helped rescue MM, Frenchie and Hughie from one of Vought's "Freedom Camps," after Homelander lured in Starlight and Butcher by threatening to execute the prisoners on live TV.

When the vindictive leader of the Seven gave chase, A-Train swerved to avoid a woman on the road - something he failed to do when he ran right through Hughie's poor girlfriend back in season 1 - and lost control, crashing through a forest.

Homelander catches up to his former ally, and no longer terrified of the powerful Supe, A-Train tells him how weak and pathetic he really is without his powers before getting his neck snapped.

Showrunner Eric Kripke explained the decision to kill off A-Train during a recent interview with Parade.

"I think it was important to kill someone really crucial and important in Episode 1 to really prove that no one was safe. And A-Train just had such a great redemption arc. In the first five minutes of the pilot, he’s the villain of the show. He’s the one who sets the whole story in motion. And then here we are in the first episode of Season 5. And the reason he gets caught is because he refuses to run through a woman. So I think it was time to bring his story full circle as a hero."

Here's what actor Jessie T. Usher had to say about his character's death during an interview with Screen Rant.

"[Antony Starr is] the best scene partner. One of my favorite scene partners that I've had on this entire series, and we got a chance to really play around in that moment and fulfill all of the wants and the needs and the desires of the character and the dynamic that these two have built and grown alongside each other. And then we finally got a chance to break it down and have something visceral and real and honest. And I wouldn't have gone out any other way."

The Boys has now paid tribute to A-Train with the following compilation clip.

In the fifth and final season of The Boys, it's Homelander’s world, completely subject to his erratic, egomaniacal whims. Hughie, Mother's Milk, and Frenchie are imprisoned in a "Freedom Camp." Annie struggles to mount a resistance against the overwhelming Supe force. Kimiko is nowhere to be found. But when Butcher reappears, ready and willing to use a virus that will wipe all Supes off the map, he sets in motion a chain of events that will forever change the world and everyone in it. It's the climax, people. Big stuff's gonna happen.

The Boys stars Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Nathan Mitchell, Colby Minifie, Cameron Crovetti, Susan Heyward, Valorie Curry, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Jensen Ackles, and Daveed Diggs.

Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Neal H. Moritz, Pavun Shetty, Phil Sgriccia, Michaela Starr, Paul Grellong, David Reed, Judalina Neira, Jessica Chou, Gabriel Garcia, Ori Marmur, Ken F. Levin and Jason Netter serve as executive producers.

So Hughie doesn’t even get his revenge moment for the death of Robin? From everything I’ve read show is so far off the source material by this point it’s barely the same thing.

@CLTMAN29 - That's a good thing imo... the comic was not good.

@CLTMAN29 - He forgave A-Train last season. I've never read the comics, but my understanding is that the show is way better.

@MarkCassidy - i hate this tendency to distill the whole book into the handful of moments where Ennis actually went too far.
The majority of the book is great.

@PapaSpank54 - I thought it started off fine, but at a certain point I realized I was only reading it to see what kind off messed up stuff he was gonna include. I think the series impoves on every single character.

@MarkCassidy - Not really. As shock value as much of the books are, there's way more to Wee Hughie and Butcher. The writing on the show seems so lazy. Even characters like Love Sausage played a big part and was only used as a gag. The show became a parody of itself too.

This and episode 2 were horrible. The fall off of this show needs to be studied.

Reboot the MCU and DCU

I didn’t expect A-Train to die so soon but I loved how they did it by mirroring him running thru Robin in the first episode to now where he avoided doing the same thing to another woman which just encapsulated the growth of that character even if it led to his demise which was bittersweet since he went out valiantly and with no fear opposing Homelander.

Kudos to Jessie T Usher for doing well in the role and the writers for a crafting a believable & satisfying redemption arc for the character!!.

Show has been god awful since season 4, I clocked his death from the very moment he appeared earlier in the show and the whole ohhh this is a reminder of the 1st episode and how he decided not to run through a woman was Pedro Pascal as hell, eff this show.

A-Train had a really good arc in the show, and his final moments with Homelander were great. Surprised he went out so early, but the stakes are high I guess and he definitely went out a hero.

@HeavyMetal4Life - My sentiments exactly. A-train had one of the best arcs/storylines on the show and his final scene was poetic, a fitting end to the character. I’m gutted that he died in episode one but with five episodes left, no one is really safe. I have a strong feeling MM is next. In episode 2 helped that bird girl escape, acting as a father figure of sorts so I’m guessing his arc is about to finish in the next episode.

I think he’s dead was well handled but idk

This show is bordering on political parody.

I do like seeing unhinged Homelander tho

Maybe this season should have been 6 episodes

I don’t want them to drag this out
We’ve been hearing about the virus and trying to kill homelander for ages now

Hold up. So, A-Train arrives on the scene and we switch to his super-speed perspective -- which shows Homelander's lasers mid-stream.

But a laser, unobstructed, moves at the speed of light. So if A-Train is able to save Hughie from a laser inches before it h its Hughie's face, then that means A-Train can move faster than the speed of light.

Homelander may also have super-speed and reaction time, but he's not fast enough to notice A-Train arriving, assessing the situation, re-arranging the scene, and grabbing Hughie before the lasers hit him. So his speed is nowhere even remotely close to A-Train's, which means he never should have been able to keep up with him, let alone catch him and kill him.

Incidentally, I get that these kinds of Quicksilver-esque scenes are supposed to be displays of super-speed, but in execution it's more like the character is able to slow down and/or stop time, while moving through the situation at super-speed in real time.

Man, where's a physicist when you need one?

What I liked the most about in this scene was his facial expressions. It said he knew he's about to die but there was no fear, more like a mixture of pity and disgust for Homelander and at the same time proud of himself.

Great acting!
