It's been almost two years since the debut season of The Wheel of Time concluded, and fans of the fantasy adaptation were beginning to grow a little impatient with the lack of season 2 updates.

Now, Prime Video has announced that Rand al'Thor (Josha Stradowski), Moiraine Damodred (Rosamund Pike) and the rest of the Westlands' ragtag heroes will return to our screens for more adventure on September 1.

Whereas the first season adapted (pretty faithfully, for the most part) the first book in Robert Jordan's sprawling saga, "The Eye of the World," the next batch of episodes will focus on "The Great Hunt," as confirmed in the brief teaser promo below.

"This season is a lot of screaming, crying, fighting, and two people talking in a room," showrunner Rafe Judkins teased at New York Comic Con last year. "We did build that groundwork. You know who these people are, and now you get to see them go on these journeys. The journeys Robert Jordan created are epic. It's a gift for people who know the books to watch the show, because they see contained in each of these characters the path that's in front of them. In season 2, we're on that path. By the end of the season, eight episodes later, it's just massive. I'm excited for people to see it."

The promo stills spotlight most of the show's returning characters, but there is one new face among them. After parting ways with the series for reasons that have yet to be fully disclosed, Barney Harris' Mat Cauthon will now be played by Dónal Finn.

For us fans of the book, season 1 was an incredible let down and not accurate to the source material AT ALL.

@mountainman - speak for yourself. I read the books and, some (very silly) changes aside, it was a solid adaptation. You might wanna try reading the book again and refresh your memory.

@rebellion - Where in the books could a woman be The Dragon Reborn? Why would a woman Dragon even be a concern since the female half of the One Power isn’t tainted?

When in the first book did a few low level inexperienced female channelers defend Falme? I thought it was an army fighting the troll is and Rand saving the day.

Where is the books did Perrin kill his Two Rivers wife?

Where in the book was Matt’s dad a piece of shit? He was actually a really nice guy.

Where in the first book did we este 1/8th of its time on a point less side story about a warder mourning?

Where in the first book was Nyneave already incredibly powerful? Her first big show of power was in the 4th book. The progression of each of the main characters power over time is important and shouldn’t have been rushed.

There are many more smaller ones, but some of these are really lore breaking.

I’ve read the entire series 3 times and have been a fan for a very long time.

You should probably refresh your memory. The showrunner is as bad as many others in trying to insert his social views into it. Which is completely unnecessary since TWoT on page is already a book that celebrates women as much as men. In fact, it was the first fantasy series ever written to equally give importance to male and female characters. So much girl power in the books! But the activist show runner needed more so he denigrated all male characters and needlessly lifted up the female charters (who are already plenty awesome in the books).

There are many more. But some of those

@rebellion - Apologies Fal Dara not Falme.

I will say episodes 1,4 and 7 were good.

And some changes were fine. I like how Logain had more screen time than page time and like how the Aes Sedai and Tar avalon came in early.

I’m giving season 2 a chnace. Maybe the COVID interruptions lead towards some of the problems in season 1.

But if the girls keep saving the day and the 3 boys continue to get sidelined, it’s quite obvious that the agenda driven producers couldn’t give a crap about the source material.

@mountainman -

I agree with practically every word you said.

I LOVE these books. They crapped all over the entire concept with one apparent goal. Hyperwokeness means all. Quality & adhering to what made the source material great mean nothing.

@DocSpock - And it’s funny, the books were “woke” and “feminist” prior to the extremist turn of these movements in recent years.

The author took problems from our world and turned them on their head in order to examine them.

It’s a matriarchal society. We see the same problems with it that patriarchal societies have. The heroes only start succeeding when men and women learn to work together.

There is a culture that promotes slavery and their leaders are Black people.

There is an indigenous culture inspired by native Americans primarily made of blonde and red haired people.

Every nation is racist towards other nations and has to learn to trust and get along with them in order to defeat evil.

The main male and female characters initially do not get along and eventually learn to.

At the start of the story, men are oppressed and eventually they earn their equal rights.

There are literally six main characters - Rand, Perrin, Mat, Egwaine, Nyneave, and Elayne. 3 male, 3 female. Perfectly balanced. Each starts off weak and unsure of themselves and each one becomes a certified bad ass as the series progresses.

I do think the show is salvageable. I do think it did some things well. I actually think some changes were good. I really hope there is a marked improvement by Season 2. This could be an all time great fantasy adaptation.

@mountainman -

I sure hope so. I am soon to embark on a long term mission now that I am retired and have the time. I will set aside an hour or 2 a day for this and slowly savor it.

I am going to take my time and reread the books. I may even make notes, because it's so long, I sometimes forgot stuff that happened years and books before.

Here's hoping season 2 fixes a lot of the bad mistakes from season 1.

@DocSpock - Best of luck! I’m going to wait a bit for my next re-read. Currently enjoying some other fantasy series.

If you haven’t checked it out, I’d also recommend The Stormlight Archive. It’s the closest thing I’ve experienced to WoT. Only 4 of the planned 10 books have been released, but it’s absolutely amazing so far. Brandon Sanderson is who finished WoT after Robert Jordan passed away.

I have heard of this. I will check it out.

Thanks!

@DocSpock - Hope you enjoy! I think Sanderson is the best fantasy author going today.

As a side note - he has multiple series that are connected in the same universe. It’s almost like Marvel or DC in that you get little crossovers and characters appearing in multiple series. And the magic systems are based on real science. Another series - Mistborn - has metal based magic where different metals give users unique powers. Very super-hero like.

Stormlight Archive is his largest epic, but he has other series and some one-off books, but they are connected and will one day build towards a crossover climax.

@mountainman -

I have read 1000s of books in my long life. i tend to run out then go searching for more great authors with long epic series. I just finished reading all of the Joe Pickett Wyoming game warden thrillers. I just finished the Dresden Files books a few months ago. They are weird, but I liked those a lot too.
