New Director Gives Us the Break Down on The Walking Dead

Michelle MacLaren, who has taken over directorial duties from Frank Darabont, is interviewed

Director Michelle MacLaren, who is the director of another AMC masterpiece series, Breaking Bad was interviewed by AMC Blogs and describes when she met Frank Darabont and TWD producer Gale Anne Hurd, she knew right away what they had in mind for the zombie apocalypse saga.

"Although The Walking Dead is a very different show to Breaking Bad, they mentioned incorporating some of the pace and style from Breaking Bad," said MacLaren. She mentioned she wasn't a big comic book reader as a kid and stuck to mainly Archie, but when she got the call she dipped into TWD and couldn't stop. "When AMC called about the project I immediately went out and got all the comics. I couldn't put them down -- I carried them everywhere I went," she said.

MacLaren was brought in to direct episode two. She describes it as having a ton of action so she didn't have time to incorporate as many wide lens shots as she would have liked. She had a blast anyway with the chaotic nature of the episode.

"I know Frank really likes that look (long lens shots) -- but it does take longer when you're in certain situations, and this episode really required a lot of action. So things were a little bit more frenetic and fast-paced," she said, "We were shooting on the street the other day, where we find Rick and Glenn in a rather dangerously challenging situation with walkers. We had 100 walkers, control of some downtown Atlanta city streets, and Rick and Glenn running for their lives. Both Andy [Lincoln] and Steven [Yuen] got so into it," she said.

MacLaren also spoke on the challenges on set when dealing with the zombie flavored chaos and not just what the actors had to go through, but the director, too. "You're not just dealing with two people talking, there's also 50 zombies banging at the door, and there is zombie goop and intestines and guts and everything around them, which is sticky -- it sticks to the actors and sticks to everything," she said, "I have a major rat phobia, and we were shooting with some rats the other night, so I took an apple box and I stood on it, because if my feet weren't touching the floor, the rat couldn't touch me."

She also brought up if there would be any homages to her other show Breaking Bad saying, "I have an axe in this show. [Laughs] I thought it was funny that there was both an RV and an axe, and I thought there might be some Breaking Bad fans who go, "Hmmm?" But the axe doesn't play a huge part, not like in Breaking Bad," said MacLaren.

Now - I'm not positive if MacLaren is continuing to direct the other episodes of TWD. What I've heard from comic creator/producer Robert Kirkman, they are already shooting episode four right away - and no news of another director has been made public. So if MacLaren is sticking around - good for her. If her style of direction is similar to her amazing work on Breaking Bad - we all win.

It may be foolish of me, but I have very high hopes and expectations for this show. This may very well be the best Comic to TV translation to date and the break out CB moment of 2010.

Thanks Kev. You have done an amazing job of keeping us fans involved and aware of all things TWD related.

@ Erickz all Iam saying is I think the Zombie thing has been done to death for the past 40 yrs or so. Vamps are more intersting anyway exception of course to Twilight. Iam not a real fan of Zombieness!

@ Spock - have you ever read the books? I'm going to go out on a loose and decaying limb and guess no. I bet if you were to read just a couple of the books you would absolutely freaking love the idea of this being made into a series. Oh and really? Vampires??? So they haven't been done to death like zombies (pun intended since they are either walking dead or un-dead ...) for the past 40 years??? Dude, your comment is simply ... illogical.

At this point, I could probably go a whole decade without seeing another vampire related movie.

p.s. FCUK TWILIGHT!!!

p.p.s. what teabag said ;-)

@ McLOvin u know i haven't ready the books yet. Iam pretty sure they are good. Yes VAmps have been done a lot. I get that, but lets be honest they are higher on the Evolutionary Ladder+their IMMORTAL. Thats more appealing to me then a bunch of dead corpses wanted to devour your flesh saying EAAAAhhaaaa!

With all due respect Captain, I understand where you're coming from (Vulcan right?).

The thing is, these stories are not about zombies. The story is about the people and how they evolve (or devolve) while faced with a post-apocalyptic crisis. Its all to do with character development and little to do with the zombies themselves. The zombies just happen to be the threat they are faced with. The true awesomeness of these books is to see how far these characters will go to stay alive. Dude, trust me on this, ITS PURE AWESOMENESS!!!

These words were said to me by my local comic book store owner and I will now pay it forward (sort of speak). Pic up the first copy of the trade paperback. If you don't like it I will personally refund you the money. Seriously, give it a try. To not do this would be ... illogical ;-)

Spock - If you liked Sandman, you will enjoy this. Give it a shot dude. I pretty much guarantee you won't regret it. And the best part is, it won't spoil anything as far as watching the TV show (in the even that you like it), cause they are only using the books as a reference.

p.s. Robert Kirkman is genius! If you are not reading Invincible, I recommend that as well.

My one hope for this...besides it being as [frick]in awesome as the comic book series...is that producers will wake up and realize that THIS can work and look at other properties such as...dare I say it...Preacher!!!!!!!!! Not nearly as long as the Walking Dead series but, in my opinion, far more brutal and risque...so..AMC MIGHT not be the network for it...but HBO, Showtime, Starz? C'mon. It is so doable. I mean, The Walking Dead is managing to film each volume as it's own seperate episode...could do the same thing with the Preacher TPB volumes.

@ mclovin. I was in our local comic book store the other day and the proprietor there stated that Invincible was actually a horrible comic and that the only reason it is getting published is to keep Kirkman happy BECAUSE of his excellent work with The Walking Dead. Just what I was told. Never read an issue of it so can't back that up with personal experience.

what Keven said!

IMHO, Invincible is almost as good as TWD. Great character development, great twists in the plot, awesome continuity, AWESOME action scenes and good comical relief. Read it and form your own opinion, but I highly recommend it as an amazing read.

p.s. Preacher Rules!!!!!

I'm sooo freakin jazzed about this show. The comics are incredible, and I can't wait to see this show. The writing and character development is amasing and very well thought out. I agree with you McLovin 100%. I havn't got the chance to read Invincible yet, but I'll definitaly check it out some time. But this show is gonna kick soooooo much ZOMBIE ASS!!!

@ Spock, Read the books, when I read the first volume and went out and bought the next four and continued from there. I only have vol. 1-8 though, can't seem the find the rest but no matter. I'll find em.

Could not put them down. The writing and story is that compelling. Great stuff!!!
