DOCTOR WHO Showrunner Russell T Davies Confirms Plans For Multiple Spin-Offs Following Recent Disney+ Deal

The Doctor Who franchise is about to expand in a big way, with showrunner Russell T Davies confirming that BBC's deal with Disney+ means that there are multiple spin-offs in various stages of development!

After taking charge of the franchise's return way back in 2005, Russell T Davies has become a beloved figure among Doctor Who fans. While he happily passed the reigns of the hit sci-fi series to other creatives following a successful run, the news of his return has been met with an overwhelmingly positive response.

Davies will oversee this year's specials starring David Tennant before forging ahead with a new era of storytelling revolving around Ncuti Gatwa's (Sex Education) Fourteenth Doctor and Millie Gibson (Coronation Street) as his companion, Ruby Sunday.

Despite having a loyal, fairly large, fanbase, it feels like Doctor Who has never quite managed to break into the mainstream the same way as other fantasy and sci-fi shows. However, BBC's deal with Disney+ looks set to bring the property to a wider audience than ever before, while the movie has also resulted in a significant budget increase.

Now, Davies has confirmed that the "Whoniverse" is going to expand with new spin-off stories.

"I thought - with no criticism whatsoever towards the people who were running it at the time, because they were running it within the BBC's measures - it was time for the next stage for Doctor Who," he told GQ (via SFFGazette.com) of his plans for the franchise. "I thought the streaming platforms are ready, the spin-offs are ready. I always believed in spin-offs when I was there."

"I did Torchwood as a spin-off, The Sarah Jane Adventures as a spin-off. Those spin-offs declined when I left, and I can see why," Davies adds. "And I very much left after 2008, when the money became scarce, I think that's fair enough for the public service broadcaster that the money is spent on other things."

We're assuming Disney+ has pushed to expand Doctor Who now they hold those streaming rights outside the UK, and this isn't the first time Davies has shared his hopes to expand the series beyond the core show. In 2021, he even suggested ideas like The Nyssa Adventures (a reference to a classic Doctor Who companion) or a team-up with the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors.

There's no word on what form the upcoming projects he's teasing here will actually end up taking, but if you're a Doctor Who fan, it's fair to say now is a very exciting time to be a Whovian...

Hey guys, hate rant here. Y’all ever get the feeling that all the Disney plus shows

Are just one big show?

Well that's ambitious. As a Doctor Who fan for my entire life I won't be checking any of this out. Timeless Child and other awful retcons still exist that ruin the story, the universe and makes everything uninteresting moving forward. Classic Doctor Who up to most of Matt's Smith run still exist and are awesome still though!

@WarMonkey - Why would anything to do with the Timeless Child ruin a spin-off show like Torchwood that the Doctor isn't even in??

@Nightwing1015 - Doctor Who moving forward is no good. Past Who is still awesome. Torchwood was fantastic especially Children of Earth. The American version and last season was not great though.

@WarMonkey - That's my point. How do you know the new spin offs won't be just as good as Torchwood Children of Earth? You're just counting them out because of the main show and that doesn't make sense.

They have tried lately to ruin this long running show. Now it's time for lots of spin offs, etc.

And they just plan to run it right into the ground.

Sad.

@DocSpock - When the show was at its most successful, it had like 4 spin-offs running at the same time. Has nothing to do with running it into the ground. Worst case scenario is people don't watch the spin offs.

Sarah jane adventures was good for what it was and had some truly great episodes

Torchwood had a decent amount of trial and error but got really great in series 3, then went to shit in series 4

Ncuti Gatwa is the Fifteenth Doctor. The Fourteenth Doctor is Tennant.

please, the spin-offs write themselves:

UNIT: after UNIT have rebuilt themselves after the Chibnall era, they have to deal with being the frontline against aliens in a new world where alien incursions are getting more frequent and Russell could finally write a world where aliens are public knowledge. Russell always said revealing aliens would make it feel less like our real world, but if the MCU can still feel mostly like our world with over 10 years of alien life knowledge, the Whoniverse can do it too, perfect timing

Companion Chronicles: Leading on from Graham setting up the companion support group, we follow a companion each episode in the style of Marvel's What If?, as they deal with aliens and everyday life (be it in the past, present, future or space), while teaming them all up in the final episode against some big threat (the recent Jo Jones blu-ray tie-in proves this could work more than ever), could be the spiritual successor to the Sarah Jane Adventures

Aliens of the Whoniverse: A better title than this, but Russell did mention wanting to give the villains of the Whoniverse their own show (could be a great focus on what the Daleks, Cybermen, Ice Warriors, Autons and so on get up to when the Doctor isnt around)

The Paternoster Gang: Someone mentioned it above, the continuing adventures of Vastra, Jenny and Strax in 1890s London, I know they did it in the audios, but would love to see it onscreen

and the big one: Eighth Doctor Adventures, Paul McGann finally gets a miniseries to show off his Doctor, frame it by having Ncuti's Doctor land on a planet which flashes back to an earlier adventure
