The CW's Arrow will be seeking redemption in the eyes of fans tonight with its fifth season premiere. The show has promised a back-to-basics approach, dimming the previous focus on supernatural elements that seasons 3 and 4 revolved around and bringing the story back to Oliver Queen's mission.
The writers and producers have also promised an end to the five-year island flashbacks that many fans have been annoyed with, and executive producer Wendy Mericle has teased that when the show returns for a sixth season next year, there will be an even bigger creative shake-up after closing what was originally planned as a five season story.
“What’s interesting about Season 5, just having been there from the beginning and knowing Marc [Guggenheim] and Andrew [Kreisberg] and Greg [Berlanti] as well as I do, the show was conceived in many ways as a five-year thing,” Mericle said in an interview with CBR. “Those flashbacks will be gone after this season. I think it is going to be a different… not a different show, but it is going to have to be reinvented in Season Six, because we’re closing a chapter for sure.”
There's still plenty going on this season, including a new "Team Arrow", a new villain in Chad L. Coleman's Tobias Church, flashbacks to Oliver's time in the Russian Mob, and the apparent return of the previously deceased Robert Queen, Moira Queen and Laurel Lance/Black Canary.
