You might be wondering who is the Doom Patrol after the big announcement that a live-action series is being made for the DC Universe streaming platform. Now, the Doom Patrol comics aren’t the most popular and the characters are rarely used in animation, but that doesn’t mean they’re not impressive.
The Doom Patrol is similar to the X-Force in the sense that the team consists mainly of misfits, folks who couldn’t fit in anywhere else even if they tried.
Here’s the thing, the Doom Patrol first made an appearance in My Greatest Adventure #80 (June 1963). Furthermore, the comic was created by Arnold Drake and Bob Haney, and artist Bruno Premiani.
Now, we understand the first set of heroes of the team were called the “World’s Strangest Heroes” and for good reasons. The first team included the likes of The Chief (Niles Caulder), Robotman (Cliff Steele), Elasti-Girl (Rita Farr), and Negative Man (Larry Trainor).
Death of the Doom Patrol
In the year 1968, the original team met their end after Arnold Drake decided to kill all of them, which then lead to the end of the series.
Since the series was canceled in 1968, there have been six additional series, but none managed to gain a huge amount of popularity. Chances are, this DC Universe series will change how fans view these heroes, but it all depends on how well Warner Bros. develops it.
We should point out that this isn’t the first time Warner Bros. has shown interest in creating a live-action Doom Patrol. The studio had such plans back in 2006, but it wasn’t a series, but rather a movie for the big screen.
Clearly, the movie plans are out of contention as it appears as if a series is more important due to the rise of the DC Universe streaming platform.
Time will tell if this Doom Patrol series is any good. Let’s face it, Warner Bros. and DC don’t have the same track record as Disney and Marvel, and that’s something that needs to change.
